Feels Like War
Summary
I sat in my room, playing with my stuffed bear. The sun was setting, and in my 8 year old eyes, everything was perfect. The birds were chirping, the leaves painted red dappling the ground. I sat back and closed my eyes to listen to the bird’s song. I frowned
They had stopped chirping.
“Echo!” Screamed my mother, crashing into my room. I stared at her, wide-eyed. “Get your sister, go go go! Don’t go through the front door.” I was confused. I sat there, dazed, until I heard a crash downstairs, and a bellow.
I screamed and scrambled towards my sister’s room across the hallway. “Amethyst? Amethyst, let’s go!”
And we ran. I clambered through our window, one hand holding my sister, the other with my stuffed bear.
“Mom!” I heard my sister scream, “MOM!”
The house behind me exploded into red flames.
