Feels Like War

It's Been Hell Not Having You Here

Echo’s POV:

Knock, knock, knock. “Hello? Anyone home?” Knock, knock, knock.

The sound bounced off the walls of our lonely home. I pushed myself off my bed, I mean, the sofa, and peeped through the cat-eye. A guy in all camo. Military, maybe?

I opened the door. “Sorry, we don’t have any money.” I said. The guy looked at me strangely.

“Missus, is anyone home?” He asked again.

“Excuse me? I’m home?” I snapped, “And if you don’t have anything important to say, I’m going back to sleep.”

“Sorry, missus. Let me rephrase that. Are your parents home?” He looked a little flustered.

“My mother is dead. My father is recovering from war in the hospital. I am the oldest one in the house. If you’d like to speak to anyone, you’ll speak to me.” I said with an edge to my voice. I didn’t choose to have this life. I didn’t choose to have a dead mother.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Man-Dressed-In-Camo replied. He didn’t seem that sorry. “Anyhow, have you not heard the news? Every family in the nation is supposed to send one person to join the military. To fight… you know… them.”
“I’m sorry. My mother is dead. My father is in the hospital. I’m not 18 yet.” I say, briskly. I would be almost 18… in a few months.

“Yes, missus. We are aware of your family’s circumstances. Your father has been cleared from the hospital today. Please give this” he handed me an envelope “to him.”

I gawked at the envelope. “My father is in his early 60’s! He and my mother had me late! They married late! You can’t expect an elderly man to go back to war again!”

He shrugged. “Sorry, government's orders.”

I slammed the door in his face. He wasn’t sorry.

Lately, from what I’ve heard, the government’s army is getting weaker and weaker, and the opposing forces are only getting stronger. The monster army. The ones who appeared without a notice. No one knew where they came from. All I know is… they killed my mother.

Mom, I’m so sorry. I should have waited for you! But I took Amy and ran…

Amy is my younger sister. Well, her name is Amethyst but Amy much more of an easy name to say.

The monsters. They took so many people. My father joined the army to avenge my mom, but he came back from the losing army. He wasn’t recognized at all. No one wants to honor a soldier returning from a lost battle.

And now they want him to return.

I ripped open the letter, addressed to “Our future soldier”. Inside, folded neatly and crisply was a letter.

To whoever will be joining our ranks,

Your army is in need of soldiers. Therefore, we are ordering each family to send out one person to join the army. It does not matter what your gender, sexuality, religion, race, etc is. Please join us! We will win the fight against the opposing forces! Show your allegiance and join us!
Please note that someone must join. We have a list of all the families. If you don’t, that is a form of treason. Also, one must be at least 18 by December 18th of this year to be eligible.
Looking forward to see you soon,
President G

What a cheerful letter for such a miserable, hopeless fight. Father, I don’t want to lose you! I can’t! What would mother say…

Then it dawned on me. My birthday is December 18th. I would be 18.

I am eligible.
