The Curse

Chapter 34: "Now We Live Like We Should"

“Vic, wake up,” I said firmly. Nothing.

“Vic. It’s me. Wake up,” I shook him again.

“M-m-mike! I… I f-found him!” I yelled for Mike.

I shook Vic again, but his eyes remained closed and his limbs remained in unnatural positions, which could only mean one thing.

“I—need—help!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, yanking at his lifeless body at each syllable.

I heard glass crunching behind me. Tears were streaming down my face, and I couldn’t breathe.

I opened my eyes with a start.

"You okay, babe?" Vic groggily asked, placing a hand gently on my shoulder.

" Y-yes," I said breathlessly. Vic's hand reached across and touched my face.

"You're crying," he said softly.

"Oh," I sighed, touching my face. He wiped the tears away and leant in closer to me.

"Will you tell me about your nightmare, baby?" Vic asked, resting his chin on my shoulder.

Normally when I'd have a nightmare, I would tell him that I didn't want to talk about it. I never wanted to talk about them, but the way he looked so sweetly and sad into my eyes made me want to open up about them to him.

"It wasn't a nightmare, really. It was a bad memory," I said quietly. All of them were bad memories: a different one each night, or all of them at once.

He furrowed his eyebrows in concern, and then he rubbed my cheek with his hand. His eyes were asking me "which one?", because I've had so many bad memories, but I knew he didn't want to say those words.

"I just don't want to lose you," I whispered, my voice breaking. He knew what I was talking about; he knew I dreamt about the bus crash--when he wouldn't wake up, when I thought he never would wake up.

"I'm not going anywhere, darling," he said.

"Bad things always happen to us, and they are completely out of our control. I'm scared, Vic," I said.

He bit his lip, not know what to say. I didn't know what to say either.

"Let's just enjoy the present time we have now and not worry abou
t what could happen in the future," he said, kissing my cheek.

I nodded. He was right. I guess my past has made me afraid of the future.

"We find out gender today," Vic grinned, changing the subject to something happy.

"Yay! Nothing to be nervous about there, at least," I smiled back. "Except I hope it's a girl."

~~

"Oh!" the woman at the doctor's office exclaimed.

"Oh? What oh? Is something wrong?" I asked, biting my lip.

"Nothing is wrong!" the doctor corrected herself. "Just surprised! Guess what!"

"What?" Vic and I asked together.

"You're having twins!" She squealed.

"Good job, babe," Vic and I said simultaneously, both winking, both pounding each others fists.

We giggled stupidly.

"That's not even the best part!" The doctor continued. We each raised an eyebrow at her.

"They're fraternal! You have one boy, one girl!" She grinned.

"Win!" I squealed. "Oh, my God, just wait until we tell Mike and Tony," I giggled.

"Everything looks good, also! So you should be due in... Oh, maybe four months, or so," she said. "See you soon," she smiled, and then she left.

"Fuck yeah, a boy and a girl! We rock," Vic said, kissing me on the lips.

"Now let's go tell the others," he grinned against my mouth.

"Alright, let's do this. I can't wait to see the look on their faces!"

~~

Vic and I called the guys to come over and hang out.

"Hi babe. Hi baby," Mike bounced in, kissing my forehead and then my stomach, which was looking awfully fat. I guess i'm glad that I knew why I was so big now.

"Hey, Mike," I grinned. Mike was moving out soon, by choice, even though we wanted him to stay. He had insisted, though, wanting to find his own place. Probably so he could more respectfully bring home fucks, or an actual girl friend.

I put my hands on my stomach. "Good Lord, I'm huge," I groaned.

"The rest of you isn't! Just your stomach," Jaime poked his head in.

"Hey, you," I smiled, sitting on the couch.

"So you're probably wondering why I've gathered you here today," I said mischievously.

"To hang out, obviously," Tony said, sitting down next to me, resting his head on my shoulder.

"No!"

"I'm offended," Tony pouted.

I giggled. "No, that too! But we also have news," I said, grinning at Vic.

"We found out the gender of the babies today!" Vic said nonchalantly, winking at me.

"Sick! What is it? Boy or girl?" Mike exclaimed.

"Wait a second! Did you just say babies?" Jaime jumped up, catching Vic's words.

I smiled. "Twins," I said.

"FUCK YES!" Tony and Mike exclaimed together, giving each other a high five.

"Mike you can have a wizard and I can have a Jedi!" Tony exclaimed.

"The force really does magical things," Tony whispered into my stomach.

"Magical things, indeed," Mike whispered next to Tony.

"Wait! I want one!" Jaime whined, jutting his bottom lip out.

"Get your own, Jaime! We called dibs on them first!" Mike said.

"Hey! They're mine," Vic said, protectively putting an arm around my shoulder." Ours," he added. He kissed me three times: two for the twins, one for me.

I guess good things really do happen.
