The Curse

Chapter 35: "I Pretended Everything Was Fine"

I woke up breathing heavily. Sweating. A sharp pain in my stomach.

I sat up, swinging my legs over the side of the bed, taking deep breaths. I suddenly felt Vic's hand on the small of my back.

"Bear?"

"Yes," I gasped as another pain shot through me. I groaned. "Yes," I said for a second time, my voice slightly rising, the panic in my chest slightly increasing. This was too early. This shouldn't be happening right now. I shouldn't feel like this for another month at least.

"Okay, hold on," Vic said quickly. I felt him jump out of bed. He raced over to me and touched my face.

"Ow," I whispered, referring to the pain in my stomach. I could feel involuntary tears start to trickle down my cheek.

"I'll get Mike," he said, rushing out of the room. I heard him call. "Mike! Get the car and the bag! It's time!" Vic yelled up to Mike's room, and seconds later I heard Mike tumble down the steps.

"Come on, baby," Vic said, gently helping me up. He helped me painfully walk to the car that Mike now had started. He opened the door for me and helped me in the back, following me in.

"Go ahead," He nodded to Mike, who raced out of the driveway to the hospital.

I tried to control my breathing. "Shit," I groaned. I leaned my head onto Vic's shoulder, clenching my eyes shut. "Shit, shit, shit," I moaned. He grasped my hand and held it tightly.

"It's okay, it's okay," he cooed.

"God, it's too early, Vic. Vic, this shouldn't be happening, not yet. Vic, something's wrong, I can /feel/ it," I moaned, officially panicked now.

"No, no, everything will be okay. It's okay, darling, please don't panic," he said softy, wrapping his arms around me. I instantly felt a little better, but I could sense his worry. I was in so much pain, it was almost unbearable. But I knew that Vic was in as much pain as me.

"We're here," Mike called from the front. He stopped the car by the entrance of the hospital and dashed in to check in, and then he retuned a minute later with a wheel chair.

"You're a rock star Mike, I love you," I said breathlessly in gratitude.

He grinned; "I know," he said with a wink. I forced a smile, but the knives that were hacking at my stomach returned again, and I groaned in agony.

"Come on, sweetheart," Vic carefully helped my out of the car and into the wheel chair. Vic's eyes suddenly turned to stone, and I desperately tried to follow his glance.

There, in the back seat of the car. Blood.

"Oh, shit," I said, my voice shaking.

"It's okay, come on," Vic shook his head and then turned his focus back to me. "Mike, thanks so much, call the guys for us," he said quickly, and then he pushed me into the hospital.

"Here, sir," a nurse took over and wheeled me into a room as Vic followed.

Before I knew it, I was in a hospital bed. Everything was a blur. I couldn't breathe or think or see, until I felt Vic's hand in mine. I squeezed it tightly.

I squeezed and squeezed. But then numbness overwhelmed me, and I couldn't feel anything. I couldn't feel, but I could hear.

"Get them out, get them out now!" A voice a million miles away demanded. I didn't recognize that voice, nor did I recognize what that voice was referring to.

"So much blood..." Someone mumbled. So much blood?

"She's going into hemorrhagic shock..." I heard frantic voices, although the sounds were slurring together.

I couldn't feel anything, but I recognized that something was in my hand... I squeezed it and squeezed it but I still couldn't feel anything... Even though I consciously was trying to squeeze whatever was in my hand... Another hand, maybe? Why couldn't I feel this other hand? Why couldn't I feel mine?

"Ow," I heard a recognizable voice whisper, but I didn't know what it meant. I didn't know what anything meant, except that the white ceiling above me was getting boring to stare at. I couldn't bring myself to move my eyes; it was like they were stuck in that one spot.

"Darling, say something," someone whispered frantically in my ear. Was that Vic?

I saw a bright light shine into my right eye, and then into my left eye, as if someone was shining a small flashlight into my eyes. The brightness moved from eye to eye again, and I realized that it actually was someone with a flashlight. Then, I realized that I could see nothing at all, and darkness was everything.
