I'll be the Brightest, You'll See

"I'm sorry, I got so caught up in work so I won't be home tonight. I'm just gonna stay at Matt's, okay." Ali told me down the phone. I rolled my eyes and nodded to myself.

"It's okay, Alex is here." I said softly.

"Oh, where is Kiera?" She sounded a little shocked at the fact that Alex was here.

"She's away out clubbing with her college friends and then staying at Sarah's." I sighed.

"You gonna be okay?" She asked me sounding a little worried.

"Yeah, I'll be okay." I lied, she didn't know what had happened tonight so far but I can tell she is constantly worried about me being on my own.

"Okay, call me if you need me okay." She said softly.

"Thanks, I will. Goodnight." I said and hung up the phone. I stared down at it and then looked up at Alex whom was standing across the room, watching my actions.

"Tonight is gonna be a long one." Alex rubbed his hands over his face. It makes me feel really bad that he's only been in my life again for a couple days and I've dragged him head first into my shit storm of problems. I guess I chose wrongly all those years ago, maybe it's Alex who I should've stuck with.

"I'm really sorry if this isn't ideal for you." I mumbled, feeling so embarrassed.

"It's okay." He started to walk over to me. "I don't mind. I couldn't live with myself if I didn't stay and help you." He wrapped his arms around my body and hugged me tightly.

"I just feel so lonely." I nuzzled into his neck.

"Do you love him?" Alex asked me quietly. I didn't understand why but it was insanely adorable that he cared for me.

"I do, 100% but he doesn't wanna be with me anymore and it's kinda my fault I guess." I sighed.

"Give it time okay." Alex kissed the top of my head. Suddenly all the lights in the house turned off.

Me and Alex both stopped what we were doing and looked at each other. "What was that?" I asked him.

"I'll go check." He said as he pulled away from me and left the room. I didn't wanna sound like a baby and ask him to stay with me but I was terrified.

After a few minutes he returned with the flashlight on his phone turned on. "Do you know what happened?" I asked quickly.

"I think there has been a power cut in the whole neighbourhood." He said, I could barely see anything.

Suddenly a thumping sound came from outside. We both looked at each other with fear in our eyes. "Okay what was that?" I asked frantically.

"I'll be right back, I'm just gonna check it out." He kissed my forehead and disappeared before I could object to him leaving.

I heard his footsteps hitting the stairs and he walked down them. After that I couldn't hear anything, it's like he just disappeared. Panic began to set in and I decided to go and search for him, after all I didn't wanna be left alone for too long.

I walked out of my bedroom and then felt my way to the landing, I should've brought my phone and used the light on it to see where I'm going but I'm an idiot. When I found the first step, relief consumed me but only for a second because my foot slipped and I missed the next step, causing me to scream so loudly and tumble down the stairs. I landed in a heap at the bottom of my stairs, whimpering.

The front door opened and I noticed the outline of a shadow, the hazy feeling began to take over my body and I passed out.
