I'll be the Brightest, You'll See

Blame Me

I watched the cars drive by on the highway. The nearest hilltop looked over the cars entering and exiting the city of San Diego. The hill was the only company I inherited for the past hour or so, simply because no one else wanted to listen to me anymore. I think there's only so much people are willing to put up with when it comes to heartaches. They claim that they'll be there for you no matter what but it's all bullshit.

The sun was beginning to decline over the skyline of the city, leaving the sky a pale shade of red. It was probably one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in a long time but my heart just wasn't in it. To me it was really just black and grey because when your heart has been shattered beyond repair, all you ever see is in black and grey. There is no colour left in anything you do.

Call me dramatic but let's be real here, I've lost everything. Vic hates me now and I have two deceiving parents whom have taken my daughter out of the country and are in hiding. If I'm honest I don't know what I'm going to do but now I'm beginning to understand why things are slowly going down hill for me. I'm just one of those people who are so damned.

I picked myself up off the ground and walked back to my car, making sure I didn't drag any grass into the car. I drove home mindlessly. When you know a route so well you never really need to think about it, you just kinda do it.

When I got back into the house I noticed how empty it was, I wonder where my sisters are? Kiera could be at college but Ali should be home from work. Oh well.

I picked up my mail and noticed another hand written letter in amongst it. It was the same writing as the letter I got before but that was months ago and I guess I kinda assumed that it was just a joke since nothing came of it.

I climbed up the stairs and ran to my bedroom, throwing myself into the bed. My fingers tore the envelope open and I pulled the paper out. "Lock your doors tonight." I said out loud. My heart began to race and I reached for my phone that was lying on my bed and went straight for Vic's contact but then it hit me, all of it came flooding back into my mind.

I shook it off and then went to Alex's name instead and quickly hit dial. After a few rings he picked up. "Hello?" He asked with a confused tone.

"Are you busy?" I asked frantically.

"No, not really why?" He sounded worried.

"I need some help and I'm pretty scared." I told him quickly, I felt like I was being watched actually.

"Okay, I'll be right there." He told me quickly and then hung the phone up.

I felt my heart begin to panic and race. What the Hell is going on here?

-

I waited outside on the lit porch for Alex to arrived. He took about 16 minutes from the second he hung up to the second his car drove into my driveway. I pretty much ran to him and he pulled me into his arms again. "What the Hell is going on Scarlett?" He asked, at first I thought he was angry at me but actually he sounded really worried.

"I need to tell you something big." I panicked. I grabbed his hand and dragged him into the house. We went up to my room and I let his hand go to find the original letter. Once I got it I handed it to him. He frowned at the words and then looked at me.

"Okay what is this?" He asked as he shook his head.

"I think it's my psycho therapist." I mumbled.

"When did you get it?" He asked me, this time sounding more angry. "I received this one about 6 months ago." I told him, then I reached over and picked the new one off of my bed. "I got this one today." I handed it to him.

His eyes widened as he read the words. "Scarlett this isn't good." He looked at me.

"I don't know what to do." I covered my face with my hands, totally fucking scared of what could happen tonight.

"You have to call the police and ask them if he's been released." Alex said picking up my phone and thrusting it in my hand.

"I'm scared." I looked up at him.

"Well it'll be less scary if you know what's coming." He told me sternly.

I quickly looked for the number of the local detective who took care of my case. I hit the dial button and waited for him to pick up. Just when I thought the call would ring out, he answered. "Hello, detective Jonathan Henderson how can I help?" He asked. As far as I remember he only gave his number to special clients.

"Hi, this is Scarlett Jones. I was a client of yours a few years ago. I was just wondering if you knew anything about my case release?" I asked as smoothly as possible.

"Scarlett, how are you? Yes I know some stuff off the top of me head. What are you looking to know?" He asked.

"I'm okay, I've been out of the psychiatric hospital for almost a year now. I was actually calling to ask if you knew the release date for Ben Phillips?" I could feel my voice shake a little.

"Ben Phillips was released a month ago." He told me. I almost dropped my phone and it scared me.

"Oh, thank you for your time." I told him quickly.

"Okay well you take care and if you need anything, call me." He said softly.

"Thanks." I mumbled and hung up the phone.

"Well?" Alex asked me as he stared at me.

"He got out a month ago." I could feel my eyes begin to water. Alex didn't say a word to me, he just engulfed me in his arms and held me tight. It's all I could have asked for in that moment.

Notes

Welp, shits going great for Scarlett...
