Mike’s P.O.V

We had all been sitting there in the hospital waiting room for three hours. Lily had blacked out on Tony’s lap. We had called the ambulance and we followed in the car. They had told us to wait here till they had her stable and then we could see her. They haven’t been back since. Just then a doctor came up to us. “You here for Lillian?” “Yes. “we all said. “Follow me.” He sounded sad. We followed him to a door. “Let me tell you now that we have tried everything in our power to save her. We’ve unplugged her. You can have a minute to say goodbyes.” “Are you sure you’ve tried everything?” Jaime asked in despair. “She’s been on the BiPAP for three hours and she’s still not responding.” For once, Jaime was speechless. He walked into the room, kissed her head, sat in a recliner by the window, and silently wept. The rest of us followed his lead. Vic went next. He fixed her hair a bit, took off her glasses, set them on the night stand, kissed her forehead, and joined Jaime in the other recliner and wept. I went next. I sat on the bed next to a lifeless Lily, wiped everyone’s tears off her face, kissed her cheek, wiped off the tears I had left, and sat with them. Tony went last. He pushed Lily over, took off his hoodie, and lay next to her. He stroked her cheek, then her hair. “She never saw.” We all looked up. “She never looked. She’s going to die without knowing what she looks like.” He was right. Lily never got the chance to see just how perfect she was to us. She always focused on the scars. She never looked in the mirror and saw her smile, or her face, or heard the way she laughed somethings, or saw just how perfect she is to us. She always looked at the scars, and in the brief moment before she blacked out she saw a different point of view. All her life shed been told that she needed to change. We had changed her but what we all loved was the way she lit up when she wore the dress. She could’ve been wearing a clown costume, as long as she loved what she was wearing, we would have said yes. We didn’t care about the clothes; it was the smile on her face as she proudly showed off what she had found. She loved that dress and now here she is. Lying on a bed, in that exact outfit, dying. Tony put his head on her chest. His expression went from unfathomable sadness, to worried, to questioning, to “Oh my God! Where’s the doctor? He lunged off the bed and sprinted down the hall. “Doctor! She’s have an asthma attack.” “What?” “Lily has asthma! She’s having an asthma attack!” The doctor rushed in followed by Tony. He listened to her lungs then called some nurses to bring in a machine that puffed out fog. He hooked Lily up with an oxygen mask connect to it and within a minute Lily sat bolt upright in the bed, coughing, then the doctor pinned her to the bed and she lay there breathing with her eyes closed. We tried to get close but the nurses asked us if we could stand in the hall for a bit. Jaime asked why and they said Lily had to breathe and if she saw us trigger another. After about ten minute, the nurses wheeled out the machine and the doctor said we could come in. Lily was in bed, sleeping soundly. “We gave her an anesthetic. She should rest now so as long you’re quiet, you can stay. I’ll ask that you let me know when she wakes up.” He walked over to Tony. “Good job. Because of you she'll make a full recovery. “and with that we were left alone with Lily who, thank God, will live to see just how perfect she really is.
