So basically I was going to get to that later on but it so far away that I can give you a bit of a summery. So Lily is a science experiment from the government to see if you can make a baby that is a born genius. She grows faster and when she was younger she saw people writing and things like that so she picked up on them. As for the reading, Sam taught her that under her bed when they first met. Her parents started abusing her when she was younger and she started self harming. When she met Sam, *Spoiler*, he and her made a deal that if she stopped, he'd stop and neither of them ever did. She found out she had anxiety from web MD. Bad source but it seemed like a very logical answer so she uses that excuse a lot. I hope that clears some stuff up.

Love this story. I was super confused but then went back and read chapter three again and it made more sense.
