Queen For A Day

Mike and Making out

Mike texted me three days later saying he and Vic would be coming over. I had no details about how he was going to do it or when, but I made sure I was awake at a reasonable time and that my apartment was relatively clean. At precisely 10:48 am there was a knock on my door. I took a deep breath to prepare myself before I opened the door.
Mike was grinning down at me and Vic was standing a few steps behind, looking a bit uncomfortable.
“Hey guys, come in,” I forced a smile and held the door open.
“Hey Cali, thanks for letting me come over on such short notice.” Mike said. He was a pretty good liar.
“It’s ok.” I closed the door behind them. “Would you like a cup of tea or coffee while you’re here?”
“Aren’t we just grabbing your jacket and going Mike?” Vic looked so uncomfortable. I really felt sorry for him.
I looked at Mike.
“Well, I guess since we’re here we could stay for a bit.” Mike smiled at me, “We don’t have anywhere else to be Vic.”
Vic looked at the ground, “Rayne will be wondering where I am.”
Mike ignored him, “Don’t suppose you have beer do you?”
“I think I do. I haven’t been able to drink for a while so they might not be brand new though,” I laughed.
I noticed Vic look down at my growing stomach.
I walked to the kitchen and turned on the kettle before pulling two beers out of the back of my fridge and handing them to the brothers.
“So how are you Cali?” Mike inquired.
“I’ve been doing ok, I have a few new students at work so I’ve been keeping myself busy. Plus I’ve been learning a few new solos on my electric. But yeah, I’ve been doing well.” I poured the boiling water on top of my tea bag in my favourite mug before ushering the guys out to the couches.
Mike exchanged a quick look with me before putting his beer down on the coffee table and turning back to me. “Can I just use your bathroom quickly Cali?”
Shit, this was it.
“Yeah, go for it,” I smiled nervously.
I sat down carefully on my couch, wrapping my hands around my mug and I watched Vic. He stared after Mike then he plopped down heavily next to me.
“So..” Vic trailed off, looking at me blankly.
“How are you?” I took a sip of my tea. It was too hot.
“I’ve been fine, better than ever,” He tried to smile, but it didn’t meet his eyes.
“You don’t seem fine.” I commented softly, watching him carefully. What seemed like anger flashed across his dark features for a split second.
“I’m fine, ok.” He grunted, looking down at his beer.
“Ok,” I sighed. What was I supposed to say to him? “How’s your girlfriend?”
He glanced at me sadly, “I’m sorry about the other day Cali, she wasn’t being very nice.”
“Right, are you ever going to tell her that this is your baby?” I pointed down at my stomach.
He shrugged. “I should. I kinda just..” he hesitated, “I don’t think things with Rayne are meant to last. We’re pretty different people. I don’t think we work well together.” He admitted, looking at me grimly.
“Then why is she moving in with you?” I was getting more confident slowly.
“Ugh, that was her idea. I don’t know why I agreed to it. I think she’s just a bit of a gold digger to be honest. She keeps getting me to buy her things. Expensive things.”
“Well why don’t you just say no to her?”
I watched as his face contorted slightly. He didn’t reply.
“Shit you’re not scared of her are you?” I scoffed.
“I don’t know, she’s holding a lot against me.” He replied quietly.
“What do you mean?”
“Doesn’t matter.” He took a long drink from his bottle. I heard the bathroom door open and mentally cursed, wishing I had more time with Vic to talk.
Mike strode out holding his phone. He glanced quickly between Vic and I and I tried to give him a look. He seemed to understand.
“I just got a call from someone, I need to go pick her up. Um, Vic would you be ok to stay here?”
I was so thankful for Mike in that split second.
Vic shrugged, “If it’s ok with Cali?”
I nodded, probably too confidently, “That’s fine, see ya Mike.”
He grinned at us before sauntering out the door.
Vic and I sat in silence for a few minutes. I couldn’t help but wonder what he was thinking about.
“Vic you don’t look happy.”
He frowned at me and placed his empty beer bottle down on the coffee table.
“You’d be unhappy too if you were stuck in a shitty relationship with someone you didn’t like.”
Wow.
“What makes you think I am happy though?” I raised an eyebrow at him.
“What is there in your life that isn’t good?” he sneered.
“Um, I’m pregnant, my parents are totally not at all understanding of me, I don’t have many friends, my job is unstable and I’m not in any sort of relationship right now. Who’s going to want to ever date me Vic? Who wants to go out with a pregnant chick? Or who’s going to want me when I’m a single mother? I’m done. I’m destined to die alone.” I didn’t meant to rant to him about that. These things had been eating me up for months now. So much that I completely believed them.
Vic’s face changed as I spoke, growing softer and more sympathetic as I went on.
“Hey, hey I’m sorry,” He moved a little closer and put an arm over my shoulder. A few tears fell from my eyes and I couldn’t help but lean into his chest. He reached his other arm over and pulled my legs over him so I was practically sitting across his lap. He hugged my body tight to his as I cried.
“I’m sorry Cali, I’m sorry this ever happened. I didn’t realise how you felt about this. I just assumed that you were happy with your life. I guess I’m so caught up about what’s happening now that I never put a single thought to the future.” He breathed.
“I’m so scared Vic.” I cried softly.
“We’re going to get through this ok Cali? You’re going to get through this pregnancy and have our beautiful baby ok? You’ll be the best mother. And you’ll still be able to have relationships. Trust me Cali, you’re beautiful. Guys would be stupid to pass up the opportunity to date you.”
I couldn’t believe my ears. Vic somehow managed to make me feel ten times better and ten times worse at the same time.
“Then why does the one person I want not want me?” I whispered as I sat up to look at him. I was walking on a tightrope by then, and there was no way I could get back to safety.
“He must be stupid then,” Vic held my gaze and gripped onto my waist.
“Do you really think I’m beautiful?” My voice was barely a whisper but I know he heard me. Our faces were dangerously close now, and his hand was up on the side of my neck.
“Yes, I do.” Then he kissed me. His lips moved against mine like they were made for each other, slowly and passionately. His hand trailed across my cheek then down to my jawline as he continued to kiss me. He pushed harder into my lips and ran his hands up and down my back, digging his fingers in occasionally.
“Vic,” I moaned lightly, trying to stop it before things went further.
“Shh,” he bit my lip to shut me up and kept kissing me hard.
I pushed his shoulders back gently, “Vic we need to stop.”
He let go of my waist and sat back, a disappointed look on his face. “Sorry.”
“There’s nothing to be sorry for,” I said gently, leaning in to give him a quick soft kiss.
Vic smiled at me as I pulled away. He looked the happiest I’d seen him in a while.
“Cali I don’t love Rayne.” He stated suddenly.
“Then break up with her?” I couldn’t help but suggest it. For once things seemed to be going my way, and I wasn’t going to let him go again.
“It’s not that easy. She lives with me.. she has nowhere else to go.”
We sat in silence for a few minutes. All I wanted was to be with Vic. I’d fallen hard for him and I didn’t think I could get up. But fucking Rayne. What were we to do about her?
There was a knock on the door just as it swung open. Vic and I looked up to see Mike standing there with a sly grin on his face.
“Hey,” he said simply.
“Hi Mike,” I silently wished he hadn’t shown up at all.
“Vic we need to go, I got a call from Jaime, he said something about wanting to show us something he’d written, I don’t really know.” Mike shrugged. Typical males, never getting the details.
“Oh, ok then.” Vic stood up and glanced between Mike and I for a split second before walking to the door. I stood up and followed them over.
“Um Mike, didn’t you say you left a jacket here?” Vic asked.
I raised an eyebrow at Mike, how were we going to play this one off?
“I checked when I went to the bathroom, I couldn’t see it, have you seen it around Cali?” He looked at me carefully.
“Um no, I haven’t sorry.”
“That’s fine, well if you see it just text me,” he chuckled.
“Ok will do, bye guys.” I glanced at Vic.
He gave me a gentle smile, “Goodbye Cali.”
I closed the door as after they walked out and slumped down on the couch. What. The. Hell.
I kissed him. I kissed Vic. This definitely a step in the right direction.
