Queen For A Day

'Sluts' and Scheming

Pierce the Veil got back from their tour a bit more than a month after my Mum found out. I’d mistakenly told Fay the day and time they’d be returning and she’d decided it would do me good to go greet them. But when we pulled up in Vic’s driveway I realised Fay had no intention of leaving me there.
“They’re late.” She commented, tapping the clock in her car.
“You seriously don’t need to be here Fay, I’ll be fine alone.” I pleaded with her. I wasn’t sure if I was just scared she’d embarrass me or scared that I’d look like an idiot in front of the guys (mostly Vic..) for bringing my socially challenged best friend along. And by socially challenged I mean scary as fuck.
“Uh uh, there’s no way I’m letting you go Carl, you’ll probably make a run for it as soon as I’ve disappeared.” She un clipped her seat belt and hopped out of the car.
“Actually I hadn’t thought of that, but thanks for the idea,” I replied dryly.
She shot me a dirty look before she climbed onto the bonnet of her car.
“Fay what are you doing?” I asked, also getting out of the car. I couldn’t help but shoot a longing glance at Vic’s house. It hadn’t been touched since they’d left. Since we’d had that moment..
“C’mon Mamma, join me up here,” Fay reached out her hand to grab mine and pulled me up with her. I balanced myself on the bonnet and watched her curiously as she clambered onto the roof and sat cross legged. “What are you waiting for?” She patted the spot next to her.
I shook my head and laughed, following her up there and sitting down carefully. The February sun was trying to peak its head through the rain clouds that had been covering the sky for the last few days. It was warm on the top of our heads and I couldn’t help but close my eyes and take in a deep breath, enjoying the moment I was in.
“What are you going to say to him?” Fay asked quietly.
“I don’t know. His girlfriend will probably be here with him, and I’m not sure if she even knows he’s gonna be a Dad.” I grit my teeth thinking about her. She had no right to be where she was right now. I’m the one who’s supposed to be with Vic.
“Maybe just pretend to be an old friend,” Fay said thoughtfully.
“Well the thing is, Jaime and Tony have no idea what’s going on. They’ll just think I’m some desperate fan who keeps surprising them. They’ll be so shocked and probably suspicious of this.” I pointed to my stomach which was now almost impossible to hide. Thank goodness for huge winter jackets though right?
Fay was thinking hard and staring into the distance. I closed my eyes and sighed. I was in such a mess.
“Cali!” Fay’s scream made me snap my eyes open. She pointed excitedly down the road and I followed her gaze to the big black bus that had just turned down the road.
Oh man here we go.
“This was the biggest mistake,” I groaned, running a hand through my hair.
Fay jumped straight off the roof of the car as the bus pulled up out the front of the house. She looked so excited. She was more excited than I was. To be honest I was dreading seeing them. It was going to be hard to explain my pregnant belly. Maybe I’ll just not draw attention to it and they won’t notice..
“Cali, come down!” Fay demanded, barely letting her gaze drop from the bus door.
I slowly climbed down to the bonnet, careful not to break her windscreen and then I slid off the front so my feet touched the ground.
“My way was quicker,” Fay snickered.
“Well you’re not pregnant.” I retorted with a smirk.
“Fair point Mamma,” she teased before walking towards the bus.
The door opened and Mike jumped from the top step and ran straight to me, hugging me super tightly.
“Cali it’s so good to see you!” He whispered in my ear. He pulled back and widened his eyes. “You’re getting so big!”
“Thanks Mike,” I rolled my eyes, “Do the others know yet?”
He shook his head, “Nah, no one else knows yet.”
“Cali we meet again!” Jaime walked up and reached out to hug me. Damnit I wasn’t going to hug them. But how could I reject him?
I walked into his arms and tried to hug him quickly and lightly, but he pulled my closer. When he let go he stepped back and looked at me curiously. I saw him steal a quick glace to my stomach. He’d figured it out. Either that or he thought I was just fat.
Tony was next, but he didn’t hug me as tight as Jaime had.
Fay introduced herself to them and hugged each one as if she’d known them forever. I was getting a little emotional with all this greeting and hugging but I managed to hide it.
Turning back to the bus I found Vic standing on the bottom step, staring at all the commotion. I broke away from the group and walked up to him.
“Hello Victor.” He visibly winced at my hostility.
“Cali, I didn’t expect to see you.” He sounded sympathetic.
“Yeah, Mike texted me to say when you’d all be back, so I decided to surprise you.” I gave him a pained smile.
“It’s good to see you,” his voice was so quiet and sincere. I couldn’t help but believe what he was saying.
“Who’s this Vic?” A small blonde haired girl popped out from behind Vic. She seemed to have a scowl on her face. Despite this, she was pretty. Then I realised who she was.
“Um, Rayne this is Cali, a friend of Mikes. Cali, this is my girlfriend Rayne.” He muttered.
I raised my eyebrow at him. Mike’s friend huh?
“Oh, another of his sluts?” She asked loudly. I froze. The bitch.
“Don’t fucking say that about Mike! He doesn’t have sluts!” I exclaimed incredulously.
She smirked at me, “You’re all the same.” She pushed past Vic and stood right in front of me.
“Cali, Mike had pretty much, a new girl every single night, I’m sorry to have to break this to you. He’s cheating on you.” She flashed me a smile, obviously trying to piss me off.
“He’s not my boyfriend! We’re just friends.” I stepped closer to her. How dare she say these things!?
“You’re the one who called Vic a few weeks ago too right? Seems like you can’t get enough of these guys can you.” She shoved my shoulder. I stumbled back a few steps and subconsciously put a hand on my stomach. This tension was making me dizzy.
“Ok that’s enough girls, let’s not let anyone get hurt.” Mike rushed up and put a protective arm around my shoulder. I stared daggers at Vic, who was still standing emotionless, not even attempting to stop his girlfriend.
“What the hell! You’re pregnant too! Holy shit this just keeps getting better!” Rayne cackled as her eyes shone in disbelief.
“Fuck off you bitch,” I screamed at her. I’d had enough. Sure she could steal Vic away from me, but I wasn’t letting her push me around. Or be a bitch to Mike.
“You’re pregnant?” Jaime asked, obviously surprised. I glanced over and nodded, tears forming in my eyes.
Fay came and stood on my other side. “Fuck off, leave Cali alone. Just go away, no one here is going to back you up. You’re just another bitch.” Fay was holding herself back. Probably for my sake. If I hadn’t been here she would’ve already thrown a punch.
Rayne looked Fay up and down. “Piss off, this isn’t about you. Besides, I think you should leave. I live here now.”
My eyes flicked straight to Vic. No way… he couldn’t.
“Vic?” My voice cracked.
He shrugged, “I think you should all leave.”
“But Vic.. how could this happen?” I whispered, the tears finally falling from my eyes.
He looked at the ground, “you’re not my girlfriend Cali.” The words were so quiet that I barely heard them. But I did. He was letting me go completely now. Everything was over, there was no chance anything could happen now. I tried to keep a straight face.
“Well if that’s the way it is. I hope you have a good life Victor. Don’t expect to see us again.” My voiced sounded scarily calm. I turned around and pulled out of Mike’s grip, walking straight to Fay’s car. I refused to look back to the group of people standing by the bus, but I could hear their voices. Fay was hissing at Rayne, Vic and Mike were arguing and Tony and Jaime seemed to be trying to break it up.
I was fighting back tears. Despite myself I could see how unreasonable I was being. How was Vic supposed to know how I felt about him? We were never together or wanted to be together so really he is allowed to date whoever he wants. But he’s barely knows her.. then again, he barely knows me either.
I heard the back door behind me open and the car moved as someone sat down.
“I’m sorry Cali,” Mike’s voice sounded slightly angry. I felt his hand come up and rest on my shoulder. I refused to turn around and look at him in fear of bursting into tears. I didn’t want to do that until I was as far away from Vic as possible.
I sighed as a reply.
“I’m just as upset as you are. She’s an absolute bitch, has been the whole tour. I don’t know why Vic’s decided to date her. I don’t think he likes her to be honest.” Mike explained.
The driver’s door opened and Fay climbed in.
“What a bitch.” She sounded furious. “How does she think he has the right to say any of that shit about you!” she glanced in the rear view mirror. “Oh hey Mike, you coming with us?”
“Do you mind? I was meant to stay here this afternoon but there’s no way I’m staying with my brother and her.” The words were spat out like venom on his lips.
“Nah that’s cool, we were just gonna go back to Cali’s anyways,” Fay turned the key and put the car into reverse, before driving out way too quickly.
“Mike, what did you mean you don’t think he likes her?” I asked once we were out on the open road. I finally decided to turn my body and look at him. The threatening tears had finally left, I just felt disappointed now.
He studied my face for a few seconds before replying. “Vic was super depressed and quiet at the beginning of the tour, after you two had that thing, ya know? Anyways, Rayne threw herself at him as soon as she started and he didn’t seem to notice. Eventually I caught them fucking one night and ever since then they’ve supposedly been dating. I didn’t know she was moving in until today when she told you. But his mood hasn’t really changed at all. He’s still depressed, if anything he might be worse.”
I processed what he had told me.
“So she doesn’t make him happy at all?” I asked carefully.
“Nope, the only time I’ve seen him happy is when he’s with you.”
No. No that couldn’t be true.
“But he always ends up even worse, because every time we see each other it ends badly.”
“Yeah, but if it didn’t end badly he’d be good. I think we need to get you two together just to see if my theory is correct.” He smirked at me.
“Um no.. He’d never agree to it.” I stuttered.
“That’s why we set you two up,”
I didn’t have a good feeling about this.
“Fine, but something will go wrong.” I huffed, turning back around.
Vic and I weren’t on good terms as it is. What was there to lose?
