Queen For A Day

Pregnancies and Poppy

CALI’S POV
“That’s great August! I think this new guitar has made you so much better already!” I encouraged my favourite student.
“Thanks! Mum let me choose it myself,” his beaming face smiled up at me. I seriously hope my kid will be this good at guitar by age ten. With parents like Vic and I it would be pretty likely though.
I glanced up at the clock. “Alrighty, that’s enough for one day I think!” I stood up and opened the door so he could run to his Mum who was just outside my little tutoring room.
To my surprise August’s Mum wasn’t alone.
“Poppy?!” I hadn’t seen my sister in law since her wedding. I’d been avoiding the Family. Poppy stood up and hugged me, trying to hide a sad smile I could see in her green eyes.
“Hey Cali, I’m sorry to surprise you, I just needed to talk to you before anyone else did,” She glanced behind me into my little room.
“Um ok? Come in, my next student isn’t here yet,” I led her and sat down across from her. What could this possibly be about?
“Listen, I’ve just come back from your Mum’s house, she invited me over since Saxon is at work all day and she wants to know everything about my pregnancy.” She paused. I have no idea where she’s going with all this.
“So?” Then my phone rang. Poppy sighed and sat back a little bit as I pulled my phone from my pocket.
“Hello?” I didn’t bother checking who was calling.
“Cali!” Mum’s voice boomed loudly through the phone. Poppy froze and stared straight at me with glassy eyes.
“Hi Mum,” What the hell is going on.
“How did you ever think you could hide that from me!? You had so many chances to tell me and you didn’t! I am completely disgusted with you right now!” Oh shit. I felt my heart sink. Poppy leaned forward and held her head in her hands.
“W-what are you talking about?” I asked weakly. I knew exactly what she was talking about.
“First Saxon and now you! I thought I raised smarter children!” I was about to cry, this is not how it was meant to happen.
“I want you to come over right now so we can talk.” And the line went dead.
I dropped the phone and glared at Poppy.
“What the fuck! How did she find out!?” I yelled, standing up and pulling at my hair.
“I’m so sorry Cali, this is exactly why I came here, I wanted to tell you before she did something like this.” Poppy was crying softly. I couldn’t stay mad at her, it was my own fault.
I sighed. “No, don’t worry, I should’ve told her anyways.”
Now what.
“I don’t suppose you could drive me back to her place right now?”
“Yes of course!” Poppy jumped up without hesitation. I think she thinks she owes me. We got into her car and I pulled my phone out, knowing I had a few calls to make. First of all was my next student, letting her know that we had to change the date of her lesson with me. Second was Vic. I pressed his contact and waited patiently for him to answer, not really knowing what I was actually going to say. I waited until it’d almost rung out, and I was about to hang up when someone answered.
“Hello,” a female voice echoed through.
“Um, sorry I think I must have a wrong number,” I choked the words out. “I’m looking for Vic,”
“Yeah, this is his phone.” My throat tightened. Who is she?
“Who are you?” I asked, probably to curtly.
“I think I should be asking who you are honey, I’m his girlfriend. No. no no no. This can’t be happening.
“His what?!” I asked incredulously.
“Why the hell are you calling my boyfriend?” I could hear a snarl in her high pitched voice. I didn’t know what to reply, I didn’t even know what to think. He has a girlfriend. He replaced me. There was a fumbling sound and some background voices over the line before a new voice came on.
“Hi, this is Vic speaking,” his familiar voice said.
“Wh-who was she Vic?”
“Cali, oh shit I didn’t mean for this. You weren’t meant to know about- ah fuck,” he groaned.
“Who is she Vic?!” I demanded, trying to control my shaking voice. I noticed Poppy give me a sympathetic glance.
“Her name’s Rayne, she’s our merch girl and my new girlfriend..”
“Oh,”
“Did you call for a reason?” his voice sounded tired.
“My Mum found out that I’m pregnant, we need to tell your parents.” I whispered.
“Yeah whatever, we can talk to them when I get home.” He didn’t even care.
“Ok, sure. I guess we’ll talk later then?”
“Bye Cali.” And he hung up. I lowered the phone slowly, trying to absorb what had just happened.
“You’ll be alright Cali,” Poppy put a hand on my shoulder.
“My life is over!” I burst into tears. “How did I let everything get so out of hand?”
Poppy didn’t reply.
I kept crying softly until she spoke up.
“I don’t know why these things happen Cali, but I know that you can get through it, whatever will be, will be. Everything happens for a reason. So what maybe he has a girlfriend, if it’s meant to be it will happen, whether that means you two are supposed to find other people or not. And don’t worry about your Mum too much, she’s just worried for you, she loves you Cali. You should’ve heard her, every time Saxon and I have seen her she always mentions you, she was so upset that you’d stopped talking to her.”
“She doesn’t care about me,” I sniffed childishly.
“Cali do you care about your baby?” Poppy set me a quick glance. I thought about it for a second, placing a hand on my small stomach. I did care about my baby. I didn’t know who they were, I’d never met them or seen their face, but I still loved it. Fuck, I didn’t even really want to be pregnant, but no matter what I would care for this child that was growing inside me.
“Yes,” I replied softly.
“You’re the same to your mother, she will love you no matter what. So maybe you have disappointed her and yes, she is mad, but it’s only because she loves you and wants the best for you.” Poppy smiled lightly at me as we pulled into the driveway of my Mum’s house.
“Thank you Poppy, this really means a lot,” Suddenly I was starting to see things in a different light. All these times I’d ignored my Mum or brushed her off was probably hurting her so much, I would hate for someone to do it to me, I can only imagine how hard it was that her own daughter was doing it. I was being incredibly selfish. With as much courage as I could muster I marched up to the front door and pushed the door open slightly.
“Hello?” I called into the huge foyer. My nervous voice echoed off the walls.
“Hello Cali,” my mother appeared in the living room door. She was standing slightly slumped with red rimmed eyes staring up into my own and her hands wringing together.
“I’m so sorry Mum,” I rushed over to her and wrapped my arms around her in tight hug, something I hadn’t done in years. “I didn’t ever mean for this to happen.”
She hugged me back, thankfully.
“Ok Love, come on, let’s go talk.” Her voice sounded soft and gentle. I followed her into the living room and sat down in my old favourite arm chair. She sat across from my carefully, on one of the royal red couches.
“So. You’re pregnant.” She started tightly. This was going to be an uncomfortable conversation..
“Yeah, I’m sorry you didn’t hear it from me first, I wanted to tell you but it was just hard you know.. and then Saxon and Poppy came along with their baby and you seemed so disappointed that I.. I just couldn’t bring myself to tell you..” I explained, trying to avoid eye contact.
“So would you have just avoided me forever? Hidden your child away from the family? Come on Cali, you’re an adult. You’ve been being incredibly immature.” She scolded.
“I know.”
“I didn’t even know you were with anyone, couldn’t you at least have told me that you had a boyfriend?” She looked so disappointed. I couldn’t break her heart more.. but I couldn’t lie again could I?
“Sorry Mum, but-” I paused, “we haven’t been together for very long, my boyfriend I just thought it was too soon to do the whole introducing-to-the-family thing.” I lied. I had to. What would she say if she knew it was a one night stand?
“Ok Love, when will I get to meet him then?”
I was digging myself a deeper hole by the second.
“He’s away at the moment, with work.” I still couldn’t make eye contact. She’d figure out I was lying straight away.
“Ok,” she looked at my quizzically for a few seconds. “Well I can’t wait to meet your boyfriend.”
Neither can I Mum.. neither can I
