The Life and Lies of The How-To Manual

How to Watch Angels Fall

It was a few days later, a Tuesday perhaps, that the meds started to kick in.

The visitors were frequent. Even All Time Low came in to see me yesterday. They were rambunctious and the nurses were constantly giving them dirty looks, but I was happy to see them, especially since I had regained my sight.

I felt better. A lot better. The headaches had nearly gone away, but the low functioning movement had set in. It felt like whenever I had to move my limbs, I was moving a mountain on top of them. Getting water was terrible, going to the bathroom was worse. I felt stuck in the bed.

Luckily, Zack had brought the headbands game with him. We were happy to play that for a solid hour.

Dr. Cameron and Dr. Chase were constantly in and out of the room, making nice conversation as they checked up on me. They seemed fairly enjoyable. They were pretty nice people.

I constantly was writing in my how-to manual. I had to leave something behind for them to follow! I made notes of everything and how I did and how it worked. The pages were all filled.

Except for the last one. I saved the last one for a final, special, and ultimate how-to guide. I don’t know what it is yet, but I’ll figure it out eventually.

It was late this night when Jaime entered the room. I smiled feebly at him. Even in his dirty grey shirt and jeans he looked as handsome as ever. I couldn’t be happier to spend whatever time I have left with this man.

I still couldn’t believe it had all started one day in high school when he walked into the back percussion room. What a day it had been.

“Hey, Might Ding. Doing alright?” I nodded to his question, still grinning from ear to ear. It was late at night and there shouldn’t be any visitors, but I assume he had snuck in here or had begged the attending nurses to let him stay. He picked up my hand, kissing the back of it.

“I’m fine. Alex and the others just left.” I noted. He nodded, pointing to the balloons in the corner that they had brought in. What a nice sentiment.

“I have something we need to go do.” He said and grabbed my rolling monitor and IV drip. I looked at him curiously while slowly getting out of bed. I grabbed onto the monitor for support.

“Where are we going? I can’t walk that easily.” I told him softly. His grin didn’t fade. I just kept on staring at him as he pulled a wheelchair out of the corner.

“Let’s go old lady. We need to get somewhere before someone catches us.” He giggled. I rolled my eyes, but I went with it.

There’s a possibility I will die tomorrow. What’s the harm in breaking some rules and having a little fun?

Then again, I might not just die tomorrow. Maybe.

“I’ll leave a note.” Jaime muttered as he scribbled a note, leaving it on the unkempt bed. I settled into the wheelchair and grabbed onto my IV drip. It was a slow process trying to get me and the drip out the door, but eventually we made it. It was already a half hour before midnight. What could Jaime possibly want now?

We barely rolled down to the elevator before a nurse stopped us, glaring at Jaime.

“Sir, you can’t just steal patients!” She crossed her arms. I looked up at him, feeling a little nervous. Jaime didn’t look phased at all.

“I’m sorry miss, but this young lady has always wanted to go stargazing and there is supposed to be a meteor shower happening until Saturday night, so I’m just pushing her up to the roof to go and gaze at the stars.” Jaime said. I gasped.

“Really!?” I could hear the heart rate monitor jump in excitement. The nurse raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

“Would you like to stand watch at the elevator door just outside the roof?” Jaime asked. The nurse relented. I saw her shoulder slump a little. Maybe because she knew I was critical or maybe because working the night shift is boring, but she stepped aside.

“Don’t let her get to cold.” She warned before we jumped in the elevator. The bassist pushing my wheelchair grinned and waved.

The elevator ride was slow but well worth the wait. When we arrived on the roof, it was fantastic. The city lights were farther in the distance, allowing for a pretty clear view, especially to the east. The Milky Way galaxy was as clear as could be. There were two chair already set up on the roof with some blankets.

We sat down and it was serene. There are hardly any words to describe the moment, so I honestly won’t try.

The meteors came sporadically but when they did, they were angles crashing down to earth with their wings burning up behind them. But they’re angels. They’ll fly again.

Jaime took my hand in his, the silence so comfortable I could sleep in it forever. He ran his thumb over the back of my hand. I felt his rough skin run over my smooth, pale hand. I looked over at him and saw the falling angels glisten in his eyes like reflections of far off galaxies and wonders unbeknownst to humans. I just felt…in love.

“Jaime?” I asked feebly. My throat felt hoarse. I prayed to save it for another day when I’d need it more. If only it would hold out until then.

“Yes, my dear?” he asked.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.” He sighed. And all was right with the world. At least for now.

Ok so you have a lot to answer for considering it’s 2 am, I have to be up in 3 hours and I’m bawling my eyes out.
If you see this, thank you for writing such a beautiful story in both this and the first part. Even though it was fanfiction, I connected with it, having just lost my cousin to a brain tumour that basically turned him into Willow. He lost most of his basic function in a very similar way to Willow, and then died in the final hours of his 16th birthday, a year after diagnosis. The way you wrote this made me relive that, and your writing took me on a journey
TL:DR I'm crying, thank you. <3
