This is The Street Youth Rising Up

Talent Show

I went to school the next morning and saw Tony.
“Hey, what did Jaime say?” I asked him.
“He's cool with it.” He replied.
“What's that?” I asked, looking at the school bulletin board.
“A talent show?” Tony asked. “What are you thinking, Abbey?”
“You, know what I'm thinking.” I replied.
“We don't even know a song to play, we don't even know a name for our band.” He said.
“We'll come up with one, don't worry.” I said. “And as for the song, I already wrote one.”
Jaime walked up to us a few minutes before first period.
“Hey guys, what's up?” He asked.
“Abbey wrote a song and she wants us to play it in the school talent show.” Tony said.
“Cool.” Jaime replied.
“Cool? It's too soon. We'd have to practice every day for hours after school.” Tony said in an angry tone.
“But Tony, isn't that the point of having a band? You put all you've got into it?” Jaime replied.
There was a silence between us, then Tony looked at me.
“Fine, we practice at your place Abbey, every day until the talent show, and we need a name for the band.” Tony told me.
“Okay.” I replied.
It was at that point I realized that we didn't have a drummer.
“Damn it.” I said.
Later that day at lunch I printed out a flier and posted it to the school bulletin board saying 'Drummer Wanted', and gave my contact information. I got a call that day from someone named Mike.
“So, I saw your flier on the bulletin board, you need a drummer?” He asked.
“Yeah, you play?” I asked in return.
“Would I be calling if I didn't?” He replied.
“Good point.” I said.
I went over to his place and he introduced me to his brother Vic.
“You trying to start a band or something?” Vic asked me.
“Yeah.” I replied.
He nodded.
“Well, Mike's your drummer.” He said, walking out of the room.
I felt sort of guilty, did Vic have any talents that I didn't know of? Mike played a song I was vert familiar with, 'Last Resort' by Papa Roach. He was great.
“Wow, you're amazing.” I said.
“Thanks.” He replied.
“So am I in the band now?” He asked me.
“With my permission, yes.” I told him.
I just hoped Tony and Jaime were okay with it.
“Hey, does Vic play anything?” I asked Mike.
“He sings, but he doesn't really let anyone know it.” He replied.
“Why not?” I asked him.
“He thinks people will make fun of him, for some unknown reason.” He said.
“I want to hear him sing.” I told him.
“Okay. Vic get in here!” He yelled.
Vic came in looking sort of worried as to what was going to happen.
“Abbey wants you to sing for us.” He said.
“You told her?” Vic said.
“Yeah.” Mike replied.
Looking annoyed, Vic grabbed a microphone, and they both started to play to 'Last Resort'. My only thought was 'Wow'.
“Well, congratulations Vic, you're in the band.” I told him.
“Whoa, what?” He said.
“Don't worry about what other people think, worry about what you want.” I said.
He looked down and looked back up at me and smiled.
“Thanks, Abbey.” He said.
“No problem.” I replied.
I started walking away, seriously hoping the guys would be okay with this. The next day I went to school and told them the news about Mike and Vic joining the band.
“What?” Tony said in a furious tone. “You could have called us first!”
“Calm down, Tony!” Jaime said. “We needed a drummer.
“And, Vic, why did we need him?” Tony asked.
“Back-up vocals.” I replied. “He can sing with me.”
Tony calmed down.
“Fine, it's all for the band, you know that, right?” He said.
“Of course.” I replied.
We all practiced at my house in the garage, which drove my parents crazy, but somehow they put up with it. Finally the day of the talent show came. I was so nervous, I don't think I could sing in front of the whole school. I went up to Vic.
“Vic, you'll have to do it, you'll have to sing it.” I told him.
“What, are you crazy, woman?” He asked me.
“Maybe, but you know the lyrics well enough, I'll take over the backup chorus, just please, please, do it for me.” I begged him.
He looked out to the school audience.
“Fine, but only for you.” He said.
“Thanks.” I told him, giving him a hug.
“And now I give you a band started in our very own high school, Pierce The Veil!” The principal said.
We went up to the stage and the school was silent.
“Um, we're going to play a song that was written by Abbey, it's called 'I Don't Care if You're Contagious'. Enjoy.” Vic said.
We started playing it and a few of the fellow students that were awesome liked it. After we were done playing we heard some awkward clapping. We blew it off, it was our first time playing, and we knew people at our school didn't have the same taste in music as us. We walked off stage.
“Well that was weird.” I said.
“Really, but I conquered my fear.” Vic said.
I smiled. “Do you want to be the lead singer?” I asked him.
