Tables Turned

The Ambulances Sing

“Vic I can't.” I shook my head. He looked at me with pleading eyes.

“Why not? It's only for the summer. At least give me the summer with you?” He begged me.

“There isn't gonna be space for me Vic.” I protested.

“We have our own RV, our parents saved up for it for me and the guys in the hopes that we would pursue our dream, even for just one tour.” He was so determined to get me come.

“Remember when we had to drive back from the lake last year and we listened to My Chemical Romance.” I said to him.

“I would never have thought that we'd end up touring with them.” He looked at the ground, overwhelmed by the whole thing.

“I'm so proud of you Vic, I really am.” I told him.

“So you'll come?” He pleaded. I grabbed his hands and looked at them, my heart began to beat rapidly and my eyes glazed over again.

“Vic, this is your dream. Not mine. I'm sorry, I can't come with you. Not this time anyway, I've been thinking while I was packing up. I don't think I even want to finish school at all.” I explained to him. “I want to move to LA and try to find what it is I'm doing with my life. But for the summer, I want to go home and be with nature, my family and myself. Maybe once I've gotten the closure I need with everything, that maybe we could meet up again and see how it goes. I'll be watching you every step of the way. I promise you that.” I told him. The tears began to stream down my face, making it almost impossible to look at him properly.

Vic nodded, kissed me once on the lips and then left my room. As I stood there taking in absolutely every memory that I ever had within these walls. Nothing was going to be the same once I left but it's what I needed to do. I needed to get this time to realize what I wanted from my life.

I grabbed my two bags and closed my door behind me. Lynn and Tony were in the living room watching TV, laughing about something stupid. “Guys.” I said softly. They both got up and came over to me.

“You're not coming with us are you?” Tony asked softly, I shook my head and looked at my feet, feeling the tears begin to well up in my eyes again.

“I can't but you guys are going to blow everyone out of the water. I believe in you all.” I told him through my tears. He hugged me tight and kissed the top of my head. When we pulled apart I wiped my tears away, but it was useless because more just fell. “I've cried so much today, it's gross.” I laughed.

Lynn grabbed one of my bags and we began to walk to the door. I looked back and saw Vic standing in his doorway, a sad look on his face. I let out a small whimper, which made him walk over to me. He engulfed me in one last hug, one that almost crushed my bones. “I love you and I'll always love you, on some level. Call me when you get to Oregon okay.” He whispered in my ear. I looked up at him and nodded. I reached up and gave him one last kiss. One to remember him by.

“It's time to go.” Lynn pulled me along. I waved by one last time and then we left the apartment. I gave my car to Lynn since I wouldn't be driving to Oregon. Since her parents cut her off completely she had to get a job to make some money for the last year of her studies. She wanted a car and I decided last week that I didn't need or want mines anymore, so I gave her mines. “So what's your plan for next year?” I asked her as we got into the elevator.

“I want to ditch school and move to LA.” She sighed. I looked at her and a smile crept up on my face.

“I was thinking the exact same.” I told her.

“No way, really?” Her mouth was agape. I nodded and she smiled suddenly.

“We should totally be roommates again.” I suggested, it only made her smile even more.

“YES!” She shouted, she then composed herself. “Okay when you get to Oregon, call me and we can properly discuss this and make it official.” She told me.

“I will, okay.” I grinned. The doors opened and we walked out of the apartment block. Luckily the bus that I was getting to the airport was down the street and waiting for me. We walked over to it and I hugged Lynn.

“Speak to you soon okay.” She told me. I threw her a wave and then got on the bus. I found a seat next to an old woman. She smiled at me politely and I returned the smile.

There were 4 more stops before we got to the airport but I couldn't concentrate on anything. The tears began to fall again, this time more aggressively than before. “Dear, are you okay?” The women beside me asked. I looked up and wiped away my tears.

“Yeah, I am thanks.” I lied through my teeth but this old women didn't need to deal with my emotional bullshit.

“Are you sure? I know I'm old but I'm not stupid. It seems as though something is bothering you.” She said with a softly voice. It was almost soothing for me.

“I just don't know if I've made the biggest mistake of my life or not.” I sighed. My tears had stopped a little but the slightest thing could set them off again.

“What did you leave behind?” She asked, it was as if she knew exactly what it was that I had done.

“My boyfriend, his band were asked to join a tour for the summer and he asked me to go with him but I declined and decided that I wanted to go back home and be on my own for a bit.” I told her.

“Why do you need time to be on your own, is there something going on in your head?” She questioned.

“No, I don't know why I'm doing this to be honest with you.” I explained to her.

“Are you sure you want to do this and there isn't something else that's pushing you towards it?” She asked, this woman wasn't afraid to be nosy.

“I don't know honestly.” I sighed.

“My husband and I have been together since we were 21, my parents hired him to paint our house and I knew from the moment I saw him that I wanted to be with him forever.” She smiled so happily. “He thought I would leave him for someone with more money and more to offer me but I didn't want anyone else. True love isn't something that can be bought, I just hope that you can figure out what it is that you want before you lose it.” Her story was so peaceful and happy. “What's your name dear?” She asked me.

“Savannah Lewis, and you?” I retaliated politely.

“Vivian Fuentes.” She told me. My eyes almost fell out of my head.

“Do you have kids?” I asked quickly.

“Why yes, I have two sons. They're both around your age dear. Victor and Michael.” She said proudly.

I felt like my head was going to explode. “I need to get off.” I mumbled to myself.

“Savannah, go and get Vic.” She placed her hand on mine. I looked at her in disbelief. “My boy talks fondly of you, you're the girl of his dreams. If you're having doubts about leaving then don't leave.” She told me.

“This is gotta be a sign right? What are the odds?” I asked myself more than her.

“Go, there's a stop just here.” She said nodding towards the stop sign. I jumped to my feet and grabbed my bags.

“Thank you so much.” I smiled gratefully.

“Good luck.” She smiled.

She nodded and I ran off the bus as it stopped. I jumped into a cab just down the street from the bus stop and told it where to go. As soon as we were on our way I pulled my phone out and called Vic but his phone went straight to voice mail. “Fuck.” I groaned desperately. I tried again but still got no answer.

The cab ride only took about ten minutes but it felt like about ten years. Once we pulled up to the street where the apartments were, there were ambulances and police cars surrounding the block. “I'll have to drop you here miss.” The cab driver said to me. I nodded and quickly threw him a twenty dollar bill and got out the car.

I sprinted up the street and as I got closer I felt more and more sick. Someone was hurt. When I got as close as I could I noticed that there was a crowd of people standing there, I noticed Tony and Lynn in the in the crowd, sad looks on their faces.

My legs dragged me over to them and I tapped on Tony's shoulder. He turned around and I had never seen such a heartbroken look on someone's face before. “Tony's what's wrong?” I asked, grabbing onto his arm.
“Sav..annah.” He stuttered out. “It's Vic.” He told me, my heart began to beat a million miles an hour.

“What about him? What happened here? Is he okay?” I asked quickly. Tony looked at me and then at the ground. That's when I noticed his hands were covered in blood, his shirt was covered in blood. “Tony please.”

“I couldn't stop it.” He began to breathe heavily, his voice was broken and hoarse.

“Is he okay?” I asked, dreading the answer.

Tony looked at me dead in the eyes and that's when I knew it, he was okay. I dropped my bags onto the ground and fell into a puddle on the ground. Lynn noticed I was there and sat down next to me. She held onto me as I sobbed my eyes out. I couldn't breathe, I couldn't see. All I knew was that the love of my life was hurt and that I couldn't do anything.

“Why did you come back Sav?” Lynn asked me through her own sobs.

“I changed my mind, I wanted him back.” I cried into her chest.

“I'm gonna have to ask everyone to leave now, this is a crime scene.” A police officer announced to the group of people. I jumped to my feet and walked over to him, tears streaming down my face. “Miss you'll need to leave, this isn't a place for anyone to be right now.”

“Look, my boyfriend is involved in whatever happened here, please tell me what's happened?” I pleaded with the police officer.

He gave me a sympathetic look and sighed. “Your boyfriend was involved in a hit and run. He was crossing the road and a car hit him at around 70mph. He was pronounced dead on arrival. I'm sorry but the paramedics did everything they could for him.” He told me. I felt like the words were spinning around my head. HE'S DEAD. Vic is dead.

I looked over the police officers shoulder and could see the coroner put a body bag into the back of the ambulance. Everything began to spin in a haze and then I hit the ground, black out.
