The Curse
Chapter 32: "Everything's Okay"
“Claire?” I heard Vic’s voice getting closer, and I felt my anxiety getting more intense. Oh, God, what if he comes in here? I didn’t know what to say, I didn’t know what to do, I didn’t know how to feel.
“Sorry I was, uh, in the bathroom,” I said, shaking my head at myself.
“Oh, we were getting worried. I thought you might have been getting sick again,” he said. “The other guys are here,” he added.
I nodded, even though he couldn’t see me. “Oh, okay, I’ll be right out,” I said. I shook my head at myself again. I should just tell him. There was no avoiding this conversation eventually. I should just go ahead and do it.
“Wait, Vic,” I said nervously, walking out of the bathroom.
“What’s up?” I he raised his eyebrows.
“I, uh, I have to tell you something,” I said. “Well, I have to show you something,” I sighed. I decided to be brave. This was Vic, after all. I held my hand out, and he gladly took it. I led him into the bathroom.
I didn’t say anything, but I led him to the counter where the tests remained lined up. I just pointed at them.
Was I ready for this? If this were legit, was I ready? Was he ready? Were we ready for this life-changing event?
I looked up carefully at his face. He was just kind of staring at them, his face neutral. I bit my lip nervously, getting worried. I didn’t know what to do.
But then he squeezed my hand, and he looked down at me. Something sparkled in his eyes.
“Is this for real?” he asked softly. I nodded.
He smiled! He smiled, he smiled, he smiled! I smiled back.
“So, we are going to be a family?” he asked softly again, wrapping his arms around my shoulders gently.
I nodded, unable to find words. My eyes burned from tears. We are going to be a family.
“Are you happy?” he pulled back from the embrace to look me in my eyes. I carefully looked at his; they were twinkling.
“Yes, yes, I am happy,” I said, my voice cracking. I pulled him back into a tight hug, gripping the soft cotton of the back of his shirt. He looked so happy, so I was happy.
“I love you,” he mumbled in my ear.
“I love you, too,” I whispered.
Things were about to get complicated, but it was definitely for the better.
