The Curse
Chapter 16: "When It's Sudden Death We Fight Back"
I jumped up, startled. My mind was in several different places at once. I sprinted to the door, banging into it in my haste. I swung it open and stared at the guys, breathless.
Their eyes went wide in shock.
“I—think—he’s—awake,” I said in between gasps. Mike pushed past me and raced over to Vic’s side. I slid down against the wall, holding my chest.
“It’s okay, bear, just breathe,” Jaime knelt down, wrapping his arms around me as I tried to control my panic.
Before I was able to go back into Vic’s room, doctors and nurses raced in.
“I don’t believe it!”
“I’ve never seen this before!”
“This is impossible!”
“Someone must really like you upstairs!”
I finally stood up and peeked through the window to his room. I took in each image carefully and one at a time, otherwise I’d get overwhelmed and have another panic attack. I first looked at the doctors. They were surrounding Vic’s bed, apparently running tests and talking to him. All of the doctors had smiles on their faces.
And then I looked at Mike. I’ve never really seen him so sad and happy at the same time. Mike has always been a tough guy, and the past few weeks he has just stared into space. Now, his face was in his hands, overwhelmed with emotions.
After staring at Mike’s happiness for a few minutes, I finally let myself look at Vic. They had let him sit up. He looked tired, but he was smiling. He looked like himself. I couldn’t even put into words how I felt when I saw his eyes bright up, making eye contact with me through the window. I didn’t even notice that Jaime and Tony were already in there. I was just lost, staring through the window. But when he looked at me, and when I looked at him, I slowly made my way inside.
I couldn’t contain myself anymore. I quickly approached him, and after looking at his face for a minute, we embraced. He was alive, in his mind and his body.
“I heard you,” he mumbled in my ear. “I heard you sing to me,” he continued, tightening his arms around me.
“You’re not a curse, after all, bear, you’re a blessing.”
