Chapter 9

Two weeks later, I was sitting in my room, listening to my music with Sarah who was texting Vic when we heard a loud crash coming from the kitchen. Both of our heads shot up before our eyes connected. Worry in them glooming. We were home alone as mum and dad took Winter out to see the doctor.

‘What the fuck was that?!’ I whispered-yelled as I slowly got off my bed.

‘I don’t know. Stella? Where are you going?’ Sarah whispered-yelled back.

We are going to see what it was.’ I said to her. Her eyes said she was scared but her body followed my actions. I gripped the door handle and turned it ever so slowly before pulling it back behind my body. Sarah and I walked on our toes out the door, letting the music escape our room. We walked to the corner and saw a shadow move the floor from under the door connected to the kitchen.

‘Someone is in there… Here, carry this.’ Sarah said handing me a broom from the cupboard from next to me. She held a mop as we made our way to the kitchen door. It was good that they couldn’t escape any other way into the house, the only door being the one we are now stood in front of.

‘On the count of three.’ I mouthed to Sarah who nodded her head. ‘1, 2, 3.’ I mouthed again before we barged through the door to see two humans standing next to the fridge.

‘We have called the cops. They are on their way. You have 30 seconds to leave before we are forced to kick you sorry asses.’ Sarah said, gripping onto the mop with dear life. I stood next to her and nodded my head, scared for dear life. And I’ve been in many fights over my years of being at school.

The two people turned their heads to each other before nodding and one of them closing the fridge. They turned to us and looked at us. Their faces covered with a beanie with eye holes cut out in them. One had very blue eyes and the other brown eyes. They took a step forward and Sarah swang her mop towards them.

‘You step any closer, I will not hesitate to hurt you!’ Sarah said again.

Why couldn’t I speak? What was happening? Before I could say or do anything, Sarah was swinging her mop around as it made contact with the blue eyes head. Brown eyes coming after me. I swang my broom, hitting brown eyes to the floor. I looked over to Sarah to see that blue eyes had her pinned down on the floor and she was struggling. When I was about to walk over, I was tripped. I tripped over and when I hit the ground, that’s when I heard it.

Everything turned into slow motion. Sarah screamed in pain as blue eyes jumped off her and backed off. Brown eyes let my ankle go and jumped to his feet as he ran to his partner. Sarah pulled her arms to her stomach and she continued to scream. Blue eyes looked over to me and yelled ‘I’m sorry!’ and ran out the door, dropping the evidence. Brown eyes followed it to the floor and picked it up and running out the door to catch his partner. I jumped to my feet and ran over to her.

‘Sarah! Sarah! Shhh.’ I slide on my knees and sat next to her. My hands pushing onto her stomach, trying to stop the bleeding. It wasn’t working. It wasn’t working!

‘Sarah, I need you to hold down on this tightly for a second, alright. Can you do that for me?’ I said as I grabbed a dropped tea towel and placed it over the wound. Ash weakly nodded her head as I jumped up and grabbed the phone which was left on the counter. The blood leaving a red colouring to the white phone. I dialled 000 and pressed call.

‘Hello, you’ve called triple zero, what is your emergency?’ The young sounding man said through the phone.

‘Hi, yes, umm… my sister has been shot, and she’s losing quite a lot of blood. Please send an ambulance right away. 56 Yeager Way. Please!’ I pleaded as I was now sat back next to Sarah, holding the now soaked tea towel.

‘Okay madam, an ambulance is on its way. Am I able just to get your name and age please?’ The man asked me.

‘My name is Stella and I’m 15.’ I replied.

‘Okay Stella, the ambulance should be there in about 3 minutes.’ He said.

‘Thank you so much… ahh…’ I said through the phone.

‘Nathan.’ He said.

‘Thank you Nathan, so much.’ I said.

‘Not a worry.’ He said before the line went dead. I looked down to a pale looking Sarah who looked like she was ready to give up on me.

‘Sarah, please keep your eyes open, the ambulance is on its way. It’ll be here so soon.’ I said as I grabbed her hand with my spare hand. The tears began to spill over the brim of my eyes now. Sarah kept closing and opening her eyes, the grip on my hand becoming weaker by the second.

The door bashed down when Sarah closed her eyes and I just felt myself breakdown. I was pulled away by a man in a green suit, he placed me on the chair and raced back to Sarah. She was placed onto oxygen, a heart monitor placed on her and the beeping was so fast. Her limp body put onto stretcher and she began to be pulled away. A young looking police officer came to my side and placed his hand on my arms.

‘Madam, would you like to come with me to the hospital. We’ll take you to see your sister. They would allow you to go in the ambulance but they need all the space to try stop the bleeding.’ The officer explained. I nodded and slowly got up, my bloody hands linked together as my fingers played with each other. I sat next to the officer in the back as we drove to the hospital.

Once we arrived, I hopped out and saw mum, Austin and Winter all making their way back to the car.

I hopped out the car and ran past them, yelling ‘Follow me.’ They must have got worried as three police officers ran past them after me.

‘Please, where is she? What room is she in?’ I said fanatically at the reception desk.

‘Who sweetheart? I need a name to be able to help you.’ The elder behind the desk asked.

‘Sarah! Sarah Carlile ’ I said.

‘Sweetheart, she’s in an operation. I’ll need you to wait in the waiting room please.’ She said calmly as I was pulled back from the desk. I turned around to see the three police officers with Austin, mum and Winter behind them.

‘Will someone explain to us what is going on? Stella! Why are you covered in blood?’ Mum questioned.

‘Who may you be?’ The younger police officer questioned.

‘We are her parents!’ Austin said more forcefully. I was now sat on the floor, sobbing into my hands.

‘We received a triple zero call from your daughter about a young lady being shot. She was rushed to this hospital and lost quite a lot of blood.’ The oldest officer replied. I heard my mum weep as she placed Winter onto the floor and she gripped onto Austin. Austin didn’t speak, I didn’t hear him move.

‘My daughter was shot?’ He questioned, no emotion in his voice.

‘Yes, that is correct sir.’ The other officer spoke. I looked up to them as both of them looked to me.

‘I tried to stop the bleeding but it just didn’t stop! It just didn’t!’ I said looking at the blood on my hands. I felt an arm fall behind my back and help me up as I was still a sobbing mess. I looked to the person and saw the young officer smiling sympathetically to me.

‘I’m going to get you cleaned up.’ He said helping me walk to the nearest room. We walked in and he placed my on the bed. I was in shock and I was a sobbing mess, I couldn’t even walk, let alone talk to this guy. The officer grabbed my hand and rubbed a nice warm clothe over the blood on my hands and began to wipe it away. He did the same with my other hand until the blood had disappeared.

‘Thank… you…’ I said with a soft, sad smile.

‘It’s okay. You did a great job saving your sister, okay. Stella, you really did.’ The officer said. That’s when I realised the voice.

‘You are the guy that I talked to over the phone, didn’t I?’ I said with a smile.

‘Yep, I was on call, and when you called, I just knew that I had to help you.’ Nathan said.

‘Again, thank you so much!’ I said with a true smile.

‘It’s quite alright, come on, let’s take you back to your parents.’ He said picking me up off the bed and helping me walk back.
