Chapter 10

After at least 5 hours of the shaking of legs and stray tears of worry, a man in a blue coloured suit walked out into the waiting room. I stared at him and waited for him to tell me that everything was okay. That everything was all fine.

‘Sarah’s parents?’ He said walking up to Austin and mum. They both nodded their heads and stood up eagerly. I jumped off my seat and stood next to them, listening to what the doctor was talking about.

‘She’s lost a lot of blood. We’ve operated and given her a blood transfusion but she still is really weak. The bullet was found in one of her kidney’s which has caused a kidney failure in her left kidney. She needs a kidney transplant but it’ll take a while to find a match.’ The doctor explain.

‘I’ll give her one of my kidneys. Please, it’s the most I can do. Test me to see if I’m the right match, please.’ I said without a second thought. Mum and Austin turned to me and shook their heads.

‘Darling, you don’t need to do that.’ Mum said, softly.

‘But I do. Mum, she’s been my best friend for ever and I’d do anything for her. She’s my sister, now legally. I have to do this.’ I said firmly. Austin nodded his head and put his hand on my back.

‘As long as you’re sure you are okay with it.’ Austin stated. I nodded my head to him then to the doctor who nodded his head back.

‘Follow me please.’ The doctor said. I followed the doctor through to a vacant room. He made me change into a robe and then sit on the bed. A nurse walked in with a bright smile who warmly smiled to me. I smiled back nicely before looking to the doctor.

‘So, how do we test this?’ I questioned.

‘We need to take a blood sample, see if you match hers or if you are o negative. Then we need to see if you are healthy enough to live with one kidney. If so, then we will be operating immediately.’ The doctor explain. I nodded my head with a sad smile.

‘Okay sweet, this won’t hurt nor take too long.’ The nurse said taking my arm and stretching it out. She wiped an alcohol wipe over the skin before she tapped my arm a bit to find a vein. When she finally found the vein she wrapped I tight band around my arm and pulled out the needle. When I saw that, I was ready to pass out but I stayed awake. I felt a pinch as the sharp point pierced my skin and I looked over to see the blood being pulled from my body. It’s rather interesting how they do things. The needle finally left my skin and she put a little bandage over it.

‘There we are sweetie, now if you’ll come with me, we’ll check your kidneys.’ She said. I jumped off the bed and walked behind the lady. I looked to each room as I walked past.

One room caught my eye, a young little girl, who was wearing a crown over her hairless head. She was smiling as her mum looked at her daughter with eyes of sadness, as if she was going to see her daughter for the last time. That she’d melt into the sheets and never come back. She must have cancer, the tubes and machines that surrounded her bed, well let’s just say, I wouldn’t be able to sleep with the noise.

By the time I stopped thinking about the young girl, I was lying on a table with an ultra sound machine pressed up against my kidneys. With what the nurse saw, I was all ready to go in and give away one of my kidneys and I felt proud. I was placed into a wheelchair and right before I was pushed through to theatre, Mum ran up to me and kissed my head.

‘I’ll see you soon alright sweetheart. You are one brave kid and I love you. I’m proud of you!’ Mum said, tears falling from her eyes.

‘I love you too mum. I’ll see you soon.’ I said kissing her cheek before being pushed through the double doors. I didn’t dare look back to see mum, she’d be crying. I was placed onto an operating table which sat next to the body of weakness. Ash looked so pale and so peaceful. Didn’t matter she’d been shot, it looks like she’s had a big day and was really tired.

‘You’ll be fine soon Sarah, I promise.’ I said right before the mask of sleepy stuff was placed over my nose and mouth.

‘Breathe, in and out. That it, good job. It’ll be over soon.’ The nurse said easing my breathing and making me relax. I felt my eyes become heavy as I slipped into a deep sleep, pain free at that. I woke up to bright ceiling lights. I blinked a couple of times before I moved my head to the side to see mum sitting there, asleep.

‘Mum?’ I said softly. Mum jumped awake and smiled at me. Mother’s instincts kind of scare me.

‘Hey sweetie, how are you feeling?’ She questioned.

‘Rather tired but how is Sarah? Has she woken up yet? Is she looking healthier?’ I questioned all at once.

‘I’m quiet alright actually Stella. I am just a really tired. But do you know what’s awesome. I’m going to have a gunshot wound and a scar from having a kidney removed and replaced.’ Sarah said from the bed next to me. I turned my head that fast that it felt like I’d pulled a muscle. I smiled to her as she continued to talk.

‘Thank you Stel. You stayed with me, pretty much getting bloody and I can’t ever repay you. You pretty much saved my life.’ Sarah said, tears escaping her eyes.

‘You’d do the same for me. So don’t sweat it. And I didn’t pretty much save your life, I did save your life.’ I said laughing a little bit.

‘Stella, you get to leave in a couple hours. Sarah though, has to stay for a couple more days.’ Austin said walking into the room.

‘So she gets out on the 24th? Just before Christmas?’ I asked.

‘Yes. But we’ll be coming in everyday to see her and we’ll have a massive pork roast for Christmas Eve dinner. Because we’ll be having ham and other stuff on Christmas.’ Mum explained.

‘I’m okay with that.’ Sarah said laughing a little. We all laughed and continued to talk about little things.

A couple hours later, I was changed and ready to leave with mum, Austin and Winter. I walked over to Sarah’s bed and smiled to her.

‘I’ll be here tomorrow at 10. Text me if you need anything or want anything. Also text me if you get bored. Maybe reply to the messages from Vic. He’s been texting none stop. Considering you didn’t reply due to being shot.’ I said with a laugh.

‘Oh yeah, I’ll be like oh sorry I didn’t reply, I just got shot, had emergency surgery and am now sat in a hospital. I’m sure that’ll keep him calm. He’d probably fucking fly to Australia cause he’s that worried. But it’d be wrong not to tell him.’ She replied also laughing.

‘Yeah, I bet it was like you were talking about I don’t know, rabbits and what if they were blue and he asked a serious question like, what if they were actually red, and you didn’t answer. He would have freaked out. Oh my god, I can imagine a conversation like that. And you finally reply and be like, yeah, red like my blood that come flowing out my stomach, because I was shot.’ I said losing control of my consent chuckles.

‘Please leave before I need surgery again, this time because I laughed the stitching out of my stomach.’ Sarah said pointing to the door. I shrugged my shoulders and turned to see Mum and Austin not standing there. They must have gone to the car. I yelled a goodbye as I walked out the room and walked to the elevator to take me to the main floor. I pressed the button and waited patiently. Finally the elevator dinged and the doors opened to reveal a rather tired looking Nathan looking at me with a smile.

‘Hey, how are you feeling?’ He said as I stepped into the contraption.

‘I am feeling better, did you know that I gave a kidney away, so I have only have one now.’ I said sounding excited for no reason.

‘I did, I went to come see you but you were in surgery.’ He said.

‘You came to see me? Why?’ I questioned.

‘Because I was worried about you. You’re a young girl who is amazingly brave.’ He said. I couldn’t help but blush.

‘I have a question. How old are you? You look really young to be a police officer.’ I asked.

‘I am actually only 18. I finished school and became a police officer, but I’m working in the emergency call centre for now.’ he replied.

‘I want to do that. I would love to become a police officer. It’s like a dream.’ I said smiling to him.

‘Well maybe I can give you a lesson on that one day.’ he said as we exited the elevator.

‘I’d like that.’ I said smiling to him still. He smiled back and said.

‘Here, here is my number. Text me if you wanna talk about it.’ He said handing me a piece of paper with his number on it.

‘Okay, alright, I better get going.’ I said as I walked to the doors with a massive grin on my face.

I arrived home and went right to my room. I didn’t have my phone with me so I was expecting to have messages from Jamie and Vic. Probably from Tony and Pete. Sometimes I wish I had girl friends but then I didn’t. I picked up the green phone and pressed the unlock button, uncountable messages from everyone, mostly saying are you alright. Plus I had a missed call from dad. I should probably call him first. I swiped across his name and pressed the call button.

‘Hey dad.’ I said when he answered.

‘Sweetie, where have you been? I’ve been worried.’ He said.

‘Oh it’s kind of a long story. I was at home with Sarah and we heard a noise from the kitchen, so we went to see what it was. Turns out that they were robbing our fridge at the time and we told them to leave. I didn’t know that they were going to attack, but they did and Sarah ended up getting shot in the kidney. So she had to have emergency surgery and I ended up giving her a kidney. So to answer your question, I have been at the hospital for the night.’ I said as calmly as I could.

‘Are you serious! Where was your mother?’ He asked frantically.

‘Ironically at the hospital, Winter is sick so they took her in for a check-up.’ I said with a little laugh.

‘Are you all okay now though?’ He questioned.

‘Yep, only 3 days till Christmas so we are getting excited.’ I said smiling.

‘I know sweetie. I wish I was with you for Christmas. I miss you.’ He said through the phone.

‘But you’re with Hannah aren’t you?’ I questioned.

‘I am, she’s sitting next to me.’ He said, I could tell he was smiling.

‘Oh my god! Hi Hannah!’ I yelled through the phone.

‘Stella, don’t yell, you’re on speaker.’ Dad said.

‘Hey Stel! I’m sorry to hear about all that.’ Hannah said, in a really thick accent.

‘It’s alright. So how are you two gettting along? Dad isn’t annoying you too much?’ I asked.

‘No, he could never do that. He’s so sweet and nice.’ Hannah said in such a sweet tone.

‘Anyway, while I’ve got you on the line, Stella. I want to tell you something.’ Dad said.

‘What?’ I replied causally.

‘I may have lied to you. I’ve been talking to Hannah for 2 years not just a 7 months. And I was secretly seeing her that is why you have been home alone a lot lately.’ Dad said.

‘WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME?’ I yelled through the phone.

‘Because, well, I don’t know. I mean it was pretty much after me and your mum divorced and you weren’t coping well, remember?’ Dad said.

‘Yes, don’t remind me.’ I said.

‘Okay now, I have something else to ask. Hannah, these two years have been amazing, but when I first met you for the first time, I knew. I knew I loved you and that you were the lady for me. So Hannah, darling girl, will you do the honour in marrying me and becoming my wife and coming back to America with me?’ Dad asked. I screamed through the phone and I heard Hannah say yes. I screamed even louder when mum and Austin came rushing in.

‘What is it? Is something wrong?’ Austin said in a rushed tone.

‘No, but dad is engaged to Hannah!’ I said loudly. Mum and Austin yelled there congratulations and then left.

‘Stella, I love you, I’ll be home before you get here. I will have your presents under a tree and under a happy birthday sign. I’ll see you then. Bye baby girl.' Dad said.

‘Bye daddy. I love you too. I miss you like mad.’ I said before hanging up. I sighed and lied down on my back. I decided to text some people back.

To: Ash: DAD GOT ENGAGED TO HANNAH! AND SHE’S MOVING TO AMERICA! IM SO EXCITED TO MEET HER.

To: Jamie: Hey, a lot of things has happened over the last 24 hours, I miss you and we’ll skype soon. Probably after Christmas. P.s it’s really hot.

To: Tony: Tony! You are not going to believe what has happened. Seriously! Sorry I have been distant, left my phone on my bed. I just realised, you are probably asleep. Sorry.

To: Pete: Yo, dude, hows you and Patrick? I kid mate.

To: Vic: have you spoken to Ash yet?

I locked my phone and looked at my clock. It was 9:00pm and I was really tired. I got up and did my routine before I turned my light off and went to sleep.
