Worlds Over, Time to Die. Nothing Left but our Souls Inside.

Things in the camp have been very tense, to say the least. Everyone was mad at Kellin for kissing Alysha, and I felt bad the guy, he was alone in this. His family was gone, his friend Gabe was dead, and now everyone was mad at him. Not to mention the fight that had broken out hours ago leaving Kellin and Mike bloody. I couldn’t stand how everyone was acting, we were in this together, but lately it doesn’t feel that way at all. We used to be one big family, but now everyone is broken off into their own groups, I wanted to say something so badly, but my shy nature kept holding me back.

I was so relieved when Vic made the announcement of our move, we needed to get out of the darkness of the storage unit. I think being stuck in the small area was rising to much tension in the group, a tension I was not fully aware of because I was so wrapped up in helping Erin recover.

Erin was doing well considering the circumstance. It took her a long time to tell me what had happened to her that day when we were fleeing the city. We were sitting out on guard late one night everyone was sleeping, it was a quiet night, and there was not even the sound of crickets which made the atmosphere earie. She said my name into the darkness, it was barley a whisper, “What, hun?” I reached over touching her pale face.

She leaned into my calloused hand before speaking, “I can’t stop thinking about the day I got separated.” Her voice sounded so vulnerable, like a child.

“Want to talk about it?” I gave her a smile and her hand a comforting squeeze.

Erin nodded her head slowly biting her lip unsurely, “Everything was happening so quickly, one of those zombie things was coming after me so I started to run, Vic was trying to protect Danielle so he didn’t see me, and I panicked. So I keep running and when I finally lost it, I turned around and everyone was gone. I was alone.” I watched a tear fall down her cheek, I brushed it away, so she would know she wasn’t alone anymore.

“I sat in a car on the high way hoping to you guys would walk past, but it was almost night fall and I was losing hope when a group of people walked past the car, I thought it was you guys so I called out to them. When I got closer it was no one I knew, but it was a family a husband, wife, and their two kids. I went with them, because I was scared to be alone. We hid out in an empty house, and for a few days everything was okay till be ran out of supplies and had to leave, we didn’t have any weapons. The man, Dave, had taken the lead and I took the back and we went to search for somewhere else to stay and food, when a hoard attacked.” Her eyes darkened with pain, and I pulled her into my side hugging her to me.

“We tried to fight them, we ran, we ran until we couldn’t anymore. I didn’t turn around till I heard a scream, it was the youngest of their daughter, Becca. She tripped, and by the time her mother got to her it was too late they got her, and then they got her mother when she stopped to save her. I keep running with Dave and their son, Peter, but they were everywhere. They had already gotten Pete and Dave, and I thought I was done for and I just screamed. And screamed in hope that someone would hear, and that’s when you came.” Her voice got shakier with each pained word, and I planted a kiss on her forehead.

“I’ll protect you now, Erin.” The tears were flowing quickly down her thin cheeks.

“Don’t leave me alone again, I can’t lose anyone else.” She sobbed into my neck. We sat in each other’s arms till the sun began to rise over the tree tops, it was a quiet night with no noise besides Erin’s quiet cries. We didn’t move until Vic came to tell us it was time to gather our things and leave- there was a pit in my stomach. The idea of leaving the camp scared me. What if we lost someone else? How can I protect my family and Erin? We couldn’t lose anyone, we already lost enough.
