Roots Beneath Ideals

Too Hard To Be True

Cara’s words kept repeating in my head over and over again. I wanted to know what she meant there and then, now I’m paranoid as fuck. A million thoughts went through my head as to what could possibly be wrong with a guy like Tyson. I know some people don’t show their true colors, but Tyson? His parents are lawyers and he’s going to school to become one too. He’s also sweet and charming, a little mysterious at times, but that’s hot. Right? No? Fuck.

“Come on, Cara call and tell me you’re outside.”

I paced back and forth in my room waiting ever so not patiently for Cara’s phone call. Last thing I need for her to do is to leave me hanging, which she would do cause she’s such a bitch. I swear to God if she-.

“What do you want?” I asked as Vic jumped through my window.

“Well someone is a bit snippy today aren’t they?” He replied lounging out. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing just waiting for Cara to-.”

Fuck

“You were saying?”

“Nothing, go away.”

“Not until you tell me why you’re waiting for Cara. Wait is she back in town?”

“It’s none of your business.” Then my phone finally rang. “Hello?”

“I’m outside.”

“Okay.”

“I’m coming with you,” Vic said sitting up.

“Wrong,” I said before locking my door to give me a head start. I ran down the steps and into Cara’s car like there was no tomorrow, “Drive.”

“Is everything okay?”

“Just drive please?”

Cara took off down the road leaving Vic behind. She didn’t ask anymore questions and I didn’t say anything about Vic to her. We sat in silence, listening to the radio while Cara drove. I could tell she was anxious, but looked at bit startled, as if she was fighting with herself. I hope she doesn’t go decide to change her mind about telling me the truth about Tyson.
Cara pulled into our old school’s parking lot.

“Why here?” I asked.

“I always felt safe at this hell on earth. I don’t know why, but I do.”

We got out and walked to the soccer field and took a seat on the bleachers. We continued to stay silent for a while. It felt weird confiding to someone I hated my entire high school career, but at this moment I had no choice.

“What exactly do you know about Tyson?” Cara asked.

I racked my brain thinking, “Well I know that he’s from Texas, his parents are lawyers and that he wants to be one too, uhh, he’s 23 and um…”

I really didn’t know anything about him.

“Did you know that he’s a schizophrenic, or that he’s violent, or that he’s put his last few girlfriends in the hospital or maybe that he’s deals and does drugs?”

I sat in disbelief, not even absorbing what Cara had just said. There was just no way the things she just said were true. He’s never been violent or showed any signs of being violent. I’ve never actually seen anyone with schizophrenia, but I still can’t believe that either.

“I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true. I’m not saying this stuff to scare you or make you back off of Tyson because of me and your relationship, but because I know what he’s capable of and I’m scared for you. I don’t want to see you or anyone get hurt.”

“Why hasn’t he told me, or even his parents? How do you even know this?”

“The Pierce’s are actually a couple of assholes who’ve neglected their child most of his life. They try to hide his disease from everyone; they sometimes even ignore that fact that Tyson is schizophrenic and that he takes drugs. I know you guys have been together for a while and you haven’t witnessed it yet, but… Just be carful Keri. Tyson is a sweet guy he is, but he’s also very dangerous, he’s even a danger to himself. He will hurt you Keri, he will.”

“How do you know this, I know you’re his friend, but?”

Cara turned so her back was facing me and lifted her shirt to reveal a scar that ran along her back.

“I was in the hospital for a while; I don’t really recall what happened. I wasn’t the first and I won’t be the last.”

If Tyson is going through all of this with no help, I can’t leave him, there’s no way. Someone has to be there for him, even if it means getting hurt.

“Thanks for the warning Cara, but I can’t leave Tyson. I may not be in love with him, but I sure as hell will give him the love that his parents refused to give to him.”

“Did you not listen to anything that I just said? Are you crazy?”

“Yes, I listened to everything you said, but your proof enough that he needs someone.”

“Keri he will hurt you.”

“Fine, but at least I know I tried to help him. I can’t just abandon him like that.”

“You’re just as stupid now as you were in high school… But you have a kind heart as much of a bitch you were to me too.”

“Thanks, you’re not so bad yourself.”

We both sighed releasing some more tension.

“So what now?” She asked.

“We go to lunch on me and then we can go back to my place to meet an old friend.”

Cara turned with excitement in her eyes, “You’re actually willing to invite me over and see Vic?”

“Yeah it’s the least I can do.”

Cara threw her arms around me like we’ve been friends forever, “Thank you so much. I can’t even explain how much I’ve missed him.”

I patted her back, “Okay let’s go.”

We got off the bleachers and went out for some lunch. It was crazy to think we were actually bonding, but now after this I know that I can trust her. And as promised I did allow her to come over and hang out with the guys. They were all pleasantly surprised to see Cara. I also had Ashley come over with Chloe, so they could meet the girl that put me through hell. They were all surprised by how Cara and I were getting along, of course we didn’t tell they why were. That was something to learn later on.
We hung out until one in the morning maybe even later, but after I was very much ready for bed. I would get that after this phone call from Tyson.

“Hey babe how was your day?” I answered.

“You haven’t called all day I was beginning to worry.”

“I’m sorry, I got busy. Where are you?”

“Come outside.”

I got off my couch to peer through the window, “What are you doing here, it’s late.”

“I know, but I had to see you.”

I didn’t see him at all or even his car, but I went outside anyway.

“Tyson?” I looked around still not seeing him, “Where are you?”

“Right here.”

I turned and felt something hard hit my head. All I could think was fuck.
