Roots Beneath Ideals

Keep Your Friends Close, But Enemies Closer

The next morning I decided to take a surprise trip to see Tyson at school. I guess it really wouldn’t be a surprise though, since I told him I would come back the next day. I wanted to tell him everything, but I couldn’t come up with the right words. The traffic wasn’t helping my thinking either.

“Fucking L.A. traffic, you need to die.” I sighed and leaned my head against the steering wheel. “What the fuck am I doing? Relationships sucks, I swear to God. I’m just going to turn into a hermit. Holy fuck I might as well since I’m talking to myself.” I threw my head back up when the car behind me hooked their horn. “I’m going you impatient bitch. You try dealing with my shit.”

About twenty minutes later, I finally got to the exit for school. Once I parked in front of the student parking lot for the dorms, I started hyperventilating from letting my imagination run wild.

What if he turns out to be one of those crazy stalker ex-boyfreinds, or one the threatens your life?

“Holy fuck Keri you need to get your shit together. Do you honestly think Tyson is that kind of guy?”

Possibly, since I barely know anything about the guy.

“God I’m fucked up and I really need to stop talking to myself.”

I got out the car and walked to Tyson room. I didn’t bother knocking either.

“Hey babe, let’s go out to- Oh you’ve got to be kidding me!”

Tyson turned around surprised along with his friend. I didn’t even bother with an explanation, I walked away, but I back tracked when that face hit me. I walked back to Tyson’s room, curious.

“No fucking way, Cara?!”

This is a dream Keri. Just close your eyes then open them.

I shut my eyes and reopened them. She was still there.

“Hi Keri.”

I put my hands on my face, threw my head back and groaned, “Some one tell me I’m dreaming.”

“Wait, you two know each other?” Tyson asked.

I threw my hands down, “Do we know each other? This smut is my worst enemy and old class mate.”

“You forgot to add Vic’s ex and for your information, I’m not a smut.”

“Anymore.”

“Okay, okay wait. Babe come here.”

“Ohhh so this is the Keri you were telling me about.” Cara said with a smirk.

God give me the strength to not kill this bitch.

“What I want to know is how the both of you know each other.”

“Cara’s my best friend.”

I stared blanking at the both of them. There’s just no way they are best friends. Cara can’t be best friends with a guy, that’s near impossible. I just…no…

“So uh, when were you going to tell me about your best friend and why is she here?”

Tyson shrugged, “Surprise visit.”

The last thing I need is for her to ask to see Vic.

“By the way, how is Vic, I kind of just ran out on him. I feel bad.”

“He’s fine. Tyson, a word please.”

Tyson got off his couch after a sigh then shut his door slightly, “Let’s not start anything please.”

“Sure, whatever. Seriously you know just about everything about me, but you can’t tell me your best friend is the person I hate the most in this world?”

“Well I didn’t know you and Cara’s history, well okay maybe I did, but I never thought I would meet the Keri she hated so much. Did you really throw a water bottle at her?”

“Hell yeah.”

Tyson chuckled and gave me a light kiss, “You’re hot and feisty. I couldn’t ask for anymore, but can you at least be nice to each other for me?”

He stared me down with those beautiful blue eyes. How could I say no to that?

Dammit Keri you were supposed to come here and break up with him, not give in…

“Fine.”

“Great, now let’s all go out to eat, I’m pretty sure you’re hungry by now.”

“I am. Let’s go.”

Tyson pushed his door back open, “Come on Cara we’re going out to eat.”

“Okay.”

“When were you going to tell me you were making a surprise visit?” Tyson asked after taking my hand.

“It was a surprise; you’re not supposed to know.”

“Ohh I see how it is. Well I hope you pay me a few more surprise visits, if you know what I mean.”

“Ew, get a room.” Cara said from behind.

“For once Cara, I agree with you.” I said.

I guess it wouldn’t hurt to be nice for once.

We ended up going to iHop, which was fine with me. I really wanted some pancakes, but when don’t I want them? The ride there was peacefully, since none of us spoke, except for a comment here or there. I really thought I could pull of being nice. I hope I can at least; it wouldn’t hurt to do so.

Once we were seated and ordered our drinks, Cara was the first to strike up a conversation.

“So Keri, how’ve you been? I really like the new hair do.”

“Thanks, I’m doing swell I guess. What about you, how’d you end up in Texas?”

“Parents. They thought it would be best to move so we could all get a fresh start. Didn’t work out that way.”

“What happened, if you don’t mind my asking?”

“No it’s fine. They ended up splitting only after a few months being there. Funny thing is they literally live next door to each other.”

“Wow, I’m-.”

“Don’t please, it was for the better. Anyway, what happened to you going to Harvard, I heard you graduated top of the class.”

“Yeah I did, I’ll be attending this fall.”

“Congrats to you.”

“Thanks, what about you?”

“I’m actually thinking about moving back here. Well at least in the LA area, I don’t think I want to be in San Diego any longer.”

“Well whatever you choose, good luck.”

“Thanks.”

This isn’t so bad I wonder how long we can keep this up for.

“See I knew you two could get along.” Tyson butted in.

“Don’t push it.” I told him. “If you are serious about moving back, I know a friend looking for a roommate. We can swing by after we eat.”

“Awesome.”

“Keri, you’re back so soon?”

I looked up to see Andrea, “So soon? No, just on time, how was your break?”

“Drama filled. New friends of yours?”

“Far from it, this is Cara. We went to school together and this is Tyson, he’s new to school.”

“Nice to meet the both of you. Keri I know what you’re getting so what can I get you two.”

“I’ll have what she’s having,” Tyson said pointing to me.

“Same here.” Cara second.

“Okay be back soon.”

After Andrea left, Cara continued with a new conversation.

“I have to ask, after I left, did you and Vic finally being dating?”

“What do you mean finally?”

“You know what I mean. Everyone knew you two had a thing for each other, I just had to get to him first.” She said with a laugh, “But seriously, what happened?”

I rolled my eyes, “Yeah we dated for two years. Long story short we will probably be no more especially since I’ll be leaving later this year.”

Tyson coughed.

“And because Tyson and I are together.”

“Thank you.”

Cara shook her head, “No offense to you Tyson, but I seriously thought you two would end up married right outside of high school.”

“No way,” I laughed, “I don’t want to get married either, it’s too much of a hassle from what I see.”

“True. Oh well his loss, Tyson’s gain.”

“I’m going to the bathroom, don’t start eating without me,” Tyson said getting up.

Once Tyson was out of ear shot, Cara pulled my arm so we were inches from each other.

“What are you-.”

“Listen to me Keri; you need to end things with Tyson. He’s not all he seems to be.”

“What are you talking about, isn’t he your best friend?”

“He is, but that doesn’t matter right now. I know we have bad history, but this one time I need you to listen to me.”

I stared into Cara’s eyes and my throat suddenly became dry. Something in them told me to really listen to her.

I slowly nodded my head, “But why?”

“We’ll talk later.”

Cara moved away as Tyson came back to the table.

“I didn’t miss anything good did I?”

“Nope, not even a little.” Cara responded.

“You okay babe, you look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“Huh, uh no. I’m fine.”

“Okay.”

Dear God what have I gotten myself into now?
