The Life and Lies of The How-To Manual

How to Take Care of Willow Caston

Jaime’s POV

God, why was she so perfect?

The moon was high in the sky. I had all the lights in the house turned off. The only luminance was had was from a back porch light. It had to be eleven at night and everyone was in the water. Mike and Vic were chilling on the steps of my pool, just talking quietly back and forth. Tony and Autumn were loudly laughing. The blue haired girl was giggling at something Tony said.

I walked to the deeper side of the pool, standing on the small slope to the six foot area. MD had both of her skinny arms linked around my neck as I held her. She was so scared of drowning. She didn’t want to trip up and let it be the end of her.

To be honest, I was a little scared as well, but she had all her trust in me. It made me feel special that Willow put all her trust in me to lead her around and make sure she didn’t walk into (or off of) something. I mean, at any point, I could just let her walk into the street and let her get hit by a car again, but she trusted me not to do that.

I held her in my arms, slowly walked around in the warm water. She laid her head on my shoulder, closing her eye in contentment. I smiled as she sighed. Kissing her forehead, I laid my head against hers.

I thought back to earlier this afternoon, when I was talking to Tony and Autumn. We were all sitting in my basement, trying to think of things to do. Waiting ten minutes, Mike and Vic had soon showed up afterwards.

It might’ve been minutes.

It might’ve taken hours.

It felt like a damn year for all that mattered.

But I told them.

I told them everything the doctor said so that they were aware. I didn’t think that it was still the right time to let Willow know. I mean, I didn’t want to face her mother either. The idea scared me. Deciding to hold off on telling her about her little “dying issue”, I brought the others in to let them in on the secret.

“Yeah, and I’m a toaster.” Autumn joked half-heartedly after I explained. Vic had a somber face on and Mike was rubbing his forehead nervously.

“Well can I have toast?” Tony asked hopefully. Autumn whacked his arm and he whined.

“Look, it’s rough and I know, but we can’t let Willow know just yet. Let her have a little time to adjust. We don’t want to send her over the edge by throwing everything on her all at once. Don’t tell her about this yet. I’m going to try and give it the week.” I explained cautiously. Everyone nodded, but Autumn bit her lip, thinking for a moment. Heavy silence descended on the room.

“But she really wanted to go Camel Racing!” She whined. I sighed.

“Is that even legal?” Mike whispered.

“Only in Kazakhstan and select parts of Canada.” Vic murmured back. I was about to slap those two.

“Focus! Let’s do something tonight with Willow that won’t hurt her noggin.” I called their attention. The quiet basement stayed silent. Warm streams of sunlight slithered under the curtain cracks. Tony scratched his head.

“Take her to the beach to go cliff diving!” Autumn suggested. I shook my head.

“No, too dangerous.” I muttered. Autumn deflated. Tony patted her shoulder. Mike grumbled random nonsense under his breath.

“Hide and go seek?” Tony suggested. I glared at him. That ended really badly last time.

“Butt-queef, she’s blind!” Vic smacked his arm.

“Oh yeah.”

“Tag?”

“No.”

“Game Night?”

“No, she can’t see what she’s doing.”

“Drag racing?”

“Illegal and no.”

“Drag racing with camels?”

“Mike…” I grumbled.

“Fine, what can we do!?” Mike cried out. I looked out the window to the warm day. The trees swayed under the gentle touch of wind. I looked at my back porch, glancing through what we could do.

“Swim?” Autumn asked quietly. I smiled and nodded.

“Hey, that sounds actually legal and doesn’t require wild animals or cliffs.” I clapped. Everyone had nodded in agreement. After reaching our decision, I had made a quick text to Willow and waited for her response.

As I walked around with MD in my arms, I reminisced on the memories of this morning and am glad that we didn’t go with the camel drag racing.

“Willow?” I asked the girl. Her eyes flickered open, staring straight up at the sky and focused on nothing in particular. She yawned.

“Yes, Jaime?” She whispered. Mike and Vic slowly left the pool to go get towels. I started to move to the shallow end. Her frame shivered in my arms as the bare skin touched the wind whipped air.

“I just wanted to see if you’re awake.” I laughed softly. She nodded, looking around slowly.

“Are we in shallow water?”

“Yeah.” With that, she slowly got out of my arms, still keeping a hand on my shoulder. Her blue eyes glittered happily in the dark water. I was so happy that she could have fun and be safe. I didn’t have to worry about her so much knowing she was right here by my side. If she was away from me, I always got that weird twist in my gut.

The moon stared down at us as we slowly got to the stairs and climbed up them. Vic tossed me a green towel with a turtle on it, which I wrapped around her shoulders. Even though I was starting to shiver and my teeth chattered like an old woman, I let her dry off first. Tony tossed me another towel. We all had blankets wrapped around our shoulders. I led my girl into the house, gathering her shirt and black shorts with it. It was heavy with something, probably her phone.

Leading her inside, I made sure she didn’t trip over the step up. My soft voice guided her through the obstacles. Her steps were careful, measured, and hesitant.

“Hey, Himes. We’re going to go make popcorn. You want to watch a movie down here?” Tony asked. Autumn dried her hair with a grey towel, slowly throwing a shirt and shorts over her wet clothes.

“Sure.” I agreed. My nice little theater room could comfortably occupy the band and the girls. It was spacious, had bean bags, and recliners. The screen was huge and the projector had a high definition.

Mike and Vic trotted upstairs after them. I was left with MD down here with me. I walked towards the mini fridge by the counter in the bar area. Turning around, I expected to see her sitting in her favorite spot-the third chair to the right, her hands folded on the granite top, waiting for me to ask if she wanted Cherry Coke or Dr. Thunder, although I knew she loved Cherry Coke the most.

I always kept it stocked for her.

Instead, I had left her shivering in the middle of the floor dripping wet. She was fumbling with her shirt after dragging the shorts up over her damp legs. Her green shirt with a white bird logo was currently inside out. Her phone was on the floor, laying still at her right pinky toe. A frustrated expression marred that pretty face of hers.

“I’m sorry.” I apologized over and over. I constantly forget that she’s blind and almost always walk ahead of her without remembering that she couldn’t follow me. I rushed back to her side. She sighed in defeat. Upstairs, the buttery popcorn smell whispered for me to go eat the delicious food.

It could wait.

“Jaime, I can’t do this.” She whispered in defeat. Her head dropped to her chest. The shirt hung limp in her grasp. My girl’s little knuckles were white from gripping that shirt so hard in desperation.

I slipped two fingers under her chin and tilted it back up to look at me. She had a wide set frown that shouldn’t be there. I leaned in and placed my lips over hers. She trembled a little as I took the shirt from her, not breaking the kiss. When I finally detached her fingers, I pulled away.

“Yes, you can do this. It just takes time.” I whispered back to her. She shook her head, the poor girl still doubting herself.

“Himes, I feel so helpless. I’m stuck in the dark-“

“And what a wonderful darkness to be stuck in, not seeing Autumn and Turtle’s make-out sessions.” I whispered with a chuckle. It earned a faint smile out of her. Carefully, I turned the shirt back to normal and put it in her hands.

“It just takes some time. It’s okay to get help. You know I’m here for you. Now, let’s get you warmer.” I smiled. Her dripping hair leaked onto my hands. She took it from me and slid it over head.

“Jaaaiiime. It’s stuuuuck.” She whined, her muffled voice complaining to me. She looked awfully dorky with that green shirt stuck over her head.

She was a dork, but she was my dork, and that made all the difference.

“Hold still, sweetheart.” I chuckled, reaching up and pulling it back over her shoulders. She slid her arms into the sleeves as I kissed her nose, making her blush. It was always adorable to see the heat rise to her cheeks.

“Thanks.” She grinned. I picked up the towel and threw it over her head.

“Come on, let’s go pick out a movie for the others and dry your hair.” I took her hand and led her behind me. We tromped back out to the movie room. Although she was blind and wouldn’t see the movie, she sure would hear it. We decided on The Avengers since it was her favorite and she basically had that film memorized.

The others were loudly arguing over if a dromedary camel had one hump or two as I sat down on the bean bag, pushing her in front of me. I took the green turtle towel and gently rubbed her head with it, making sure that she wasn’t dripping too much water on me.

Damn, her hair was thick and seriously damp from swimming. Her blonde locks were tangled in on itself in her usual ponytail, but she didn’t mind me pulling on her hair. When I was done, I threw it over her head.

“Jaime, you can’t blind me anymore than I already am.” She grumbled. I snaked my arms around from behind and pulled it off of her, tossing it to the side and pulling her into my arms.

That’s when the hooligans all burst in.

“IT’S TWO HUMPS! TWO!” Tony yelled. Everyone groaned.

“Ugh, Tony, you’ve been on this for the past ten minutes!” Mike muttered and smacked his arm.

“You know what my favorite animal is?” Autumn asked suddenly as I fumbled for the remote to start the movie. Vic flicked the switch as the lights popped off. Mike passed around the popcorn.

“What is it?” Tony asked curiously.

“My anaconda…” She started slyly.

“Don’t.” Mike warned.

“My anaconda-“

“DON’T.” Mike stated louder.

“MY ANACONDA DON’T WANT NONE UNLESS YOU GOT BUNS HUN!” Autumn yelled in glee. Honestly, I think Mike just set her up for that one. Had we been over this before? I don’t know. I had lost track of how many times Autumn used this on us.

“I only have hamburger buns!” Tony complained. I face palmed a thousand times over. I don’t think he realized what song this was and how dirty that sounded. Vic was rolling on the floor, out of breath because he was laughing so hard. Mike shook his head in disgust. Autumn smirked and so did Willow.

Poor, poor, innocent Turtle.

Ok so you have a lot to answer for considering it’s 2 am, I have to be up in 3 hours and I’m bawling my eyes out.
If you see this, thank you for writing such a beautiful story in both this and the first part. Even though it was fanfiction, I connected with it, having just lost my cousin to a brain tumour that basically turned him into Willow. He lost most of his basic function in a very similar way to Willow, and then died in the final hours of his 16th birthday, a year after diagnosis. The way you wrote this made me relive that, and your writing took me on a journey
TL:DR I'm crying, thank you. <3
