Hidden in Plain Sight

Chapter 36

*Third Person*

Carly was an absolute mess. Sitting across from the interrogators, it was clear she wasn't coping. She was breaking. Slowly cracking into fragile little pieces. She couldn't handle this place. It was horrible, unlike anything she had experienced. But on the flip side, she was angry. She was angry that she had to be held in prison for so long. She hasn't been able to contact anyone and they won't allow anyone to contact her. She's really pissed off.

She sat sternly in the chair. Her arms folded and a facial expression that told the interrogators that she wasn't pleased. She was pissed.

"Why'd you did it Carly? Why did you kill Jess?" Officer Briggs asked her.

"I've told you so many times. I didn't kill Jess! You still won't freaking tell me why you arrested me and you have not presented any evidence to prove me. You all just want this case over and done with don't you. You all just want to pin this on me, take me to jail and continue on with your lives. That's just it, isn't it"

Carly had had enough of this. They kept asking her the same question, over and over again. But Carly kept telling them that she didn't do it. The officers weren't budging. And neither was Carly.

"No. That is not it. We have arrested you with solid evidence of you murdering and you are going to prison for a long time." Officer Raymond stated.

It was clear Raymond was a newbie. Briggs stared into the soul of the newbie with a stern look. He wasn't meant to say that. You do not say that.

Carly snickered. "Bull-fucking-shit. Where is this "evidence" you have against me, huh? You've got no case. You've nothing to show for yourselves. You've told everyone out there that you have solid evidence, now why don't you show me considering that I am your so called murderer. You have no evidence. You're all fucking liars!"

Carly stormed up out of her chair and smashed her hand on the table in a mad fit of rage. She hit the table so hard it caused a large echo in the interrogation room. But handcuffs and ankle chains attached to the table prevented her from doing worse. And it was lucky she was tied down too.

She was just a pure entity of rage. She wasn't the sweet girl everyone had come to know. She's been pushed to her limits by far. They've crossed the line and you would have to be dreaming if Carly was gonna give in and let them torture her some more.

But then Carly just stopped. She stopped and just stared at herself in the two-way mirror. She knew someone was behind there, but she had no clue. She knew because of the crime shows she watches. She knew everything that goes on in situations like this, but it was all acting. This is the scary truth behind it all. The ruthlessness of a murder case.

She sat down and a small tear had fallen down her face and splashed on the table. She calmed herself. She knew that this wasn't the person she is. She knew she was better than that, but that anger just had to come out. They popped the cork off her bottle and she just bubbled over. But now she's over it and just needs to breathe.

"Now miss Fox, let's go right back. Tell me how you landed the job at Fearless records?" Briggs asked once everything had calmed.

Carly thought that this was very irrelevant, but sick of everything, she just spoke. "Well, when my previous job with another band had finished, I was no longer required there so I looked around and found a job down here. I was interviewed and blah blah blah, normal job stuff. I moved here and a few days in, I met Vic and we talked and then he instantly wanted me to record their album. And so I did"

"And when you first met the band, can you describe that day" Briggs spoke again.

"Well I was at the studio early in the morning, setting up my gear and getting ready for the day and then Vic and Mike showed up. Vic introduced me to his younger brother Mike and we got along well. I showed them my demos that I created and they were ecstatic. Then Jaime and Tony arrived and we met and I obviously showed them my demos and they were happy too. We talked about the album most of the day and yeah. That was that day"

Officer Briggs pulled out his notebook from the previous interrogations and Carly wasn't lying. She told the same story the others told. It was still confusing him. But nonetheless, he continued. "And do you remember the day you met the band members girlfriends?"

Carly knew this is the story he wanted most. He wanted to hear about Jess in particular. "Well, after a few weeks of working, we all decided to go to Vic's place for drinks and for him to introduce Danielle to all of us. So we went and I met Danielle who was so lovely, she was the sweetest. And then I met Alysha, Mike's girlfriend and she was funny. She had a sassy sense of humour and I liked that about her. And then I was briefly introduced to Jess when she and Jaime finally arrived. She didn't say much to me, or really anyone, and I guess that's just because she was nervous. And yeah, we sat outside and talked all night"

"Okay so moving forward a few months, you and Jaime became good friends, and you noticed Jaime wasn't as happy as normal, and so you spoke to him about it just being a good friend, and you remember why he wasn't okay?"

"Yes, he was having relationship troubles with Jess" Carly simply answered.

"Did he tell you what kind of problems?"

Carly snickered. "Gosh you already know why. But if you must hear it from me, Jess didn't like me. She was convinced I was getting "too close" to Jaime. And to answer your next question. I eventually went over to Jess' place and we spoke and talked over coffee and I assured her that I was just his friend and work colleague. And yeah we were okay from there"

Officer Briggs stopped for a minute. He left the room and so did Raymond. Carly was definitely confused and definitely angry. But she sat still, staring into the mirror on the wall. She was wondering who was behind there. Probably more investigators. But she wasn't right.

Jaime was behind that glass. He's been there the entire time.

And honestly, he was so shocked. This is the first time he's seen her in ages it seems. And he was scared for her. He saw her snap. He saw how she was cracking inside and how she wasn't coping. He really wanted to break through that mirror and hug her and hold her and tell her everything was going to be okay.

But then the officers walked back in, but they carried with them what seems to be a file. They sat sternly in front of Carly. Hands crossed along the table, Jaime begged to see their faces. He knew this wasn't going to be good. Jaime couldn't see much. Just the officers backs and Carly's face.

The officer opened the file and spread out something in front of her. Carly's face dropped. Her hands went to her mouth. She seemed stunned. She was staring at the table in horror. But it didn't end there. A laptop was pulled out and what Jaime assumed, a video was being showed. Carly just cried. Her head fell into her hands and she was crying.

They showed her the evidence.

Split it!!

If separating it into 2 parts makes the story have a better ending than I'm all for it. I don't mind waiting a little longer
