Memories that Haunt Us

Playing in Paradise

Somewhere in Paradise….

“I’M BRINGING THE PARTY TO YOU!” JC cried out in glee. His little angel wings pumped him higher in the air, but not too far. He was still getting used to the new feel. He was adorned not in white robes and a halo, but in an oversized Iron Man shirt and shorts. His beautiful white wings fluttered happily as he tumbled about the clouds, high over California.

“Look out! Aliens!” Mitch’s voice rumbled in laughter. It had seemed like decades since he had actually laughed with joy in his voice. It had seemed even longer since he had last smiled.

The tall tattooed man leaped up through the clouds, flying higher than any being would dare to. His bangs were side swept and he was adorned much like the young child-in an old shirt with black skinny jeans.

Somewhere in the distance, The Rev was jamming out on his drums and arguing with someone else.

“Come on, Captain America!” JC jumped off one cloud and drifted to another. He tumbled onto the downy tops.

“Coming, Iron Man!”

And so it went back and forth, the man and the boy chasing after invisible aliens. Occasionally a passerby would skillfully craft an animated cloud figure to resemble an extra-terrestrial. The other angels would gladly join in the game, making the foe run away in fear as the two dove after the pillowed figures.

Eventually they banished Loki and destroyed the last of the fleet. Both collapsed from exhaustion, leaning over the edge of a white surface to look down upon the ocean’s beachside.

“We did it, Mitch!” JC rolled on his back, the wings flapping happily. Mitch stretched an arm to the dying sunlight.

“We got all of ‘em!” The man agreed. Although he was always watching over his own daughter, the singer made a promise to himself:

He would take care of Jonathan-Christopher until he got to see his dad and mom again.

“Come on, Mitch! Let’s go play with the stars!” JC cried out in glee, already leaping up to chase a shooting meteor. Mitch smiled and got up, ready to chase after the boy.

That’s when a dark figure hiding among the shadows caught his eyes.

So familiar, so dangerous, so ready to down a young angel.

Mitch eyed the figure cautiously, the man that went by two names, the man who had killed, the man who wouldn’t touch JC.

So as Mitch chased after his young companion, he always kept an eye out for the figure.
