Lost Hope
Austin's POV
I had come home from my short walk to the park. It was a faint hope, but I tried to see if Alan was hiding down there. A car zoomed by me, causing a gust of wind to push the hair in my face. The car was going way over the speed limit. But it was a back road that I trudge along. No one seemed to really care back here. The overcast clouds were old and worn up in the sky. This stormy weather was really getting on my nerves.
A faint sound caught my attention. It sounded like a cat, like Ashton, crying for help. I followed the faint sound as it disappeared to see the dirty fur of my cat. His tail twitched occasionally, showing that he still had faint life in him.
I picked up his fractured body. The car must've hit him. His eyes closed as the soft breaths that tickled my skin slowed. Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. The soft red-gold fur of my first pet dulled from the hallowed shine it used to have.
I have to save him. I have to save him. I have save him. I thought to myself over and over. There was no way I could let him die on me.
Not like Mom.
That thought was enough to send the tears skidding down the side of my face.
"Someone help me!" I cried out weakly. My Dad would ground me for life if he figured out I had secretly kept the cat. Dad already had enough stress with Mom now gone. Overhead, a bird called. This wasn't the help I needed. Ashton's breath dimmer by the moment.
"Kree!" An insistent voice called to me. I looked up to see the same raven swoop overhead. The dark bird made a grab for Ashton. I shielded the body with one arm as the raven continued to screech and fly away.
"Get away!" I shouted to it. The bird seemed to laugh and landed. Dark orbs looked at me expectantly. What could I do to save my pet?
"Kree! Craw!" The bird sounded off, this time he was annoyed. He flapped his wings, getting pissed. I walked towards him. The bird took off and went towards the fields. A sudden thought dawned upon me.
It felt like a lost hope to even try. The thing was, I had to save him. I couldn't save Mom from the Rogue, but I could save Ashton. The heat of his little body was ebbing out as his whiskers twitched.
I took off towards the fields, not caring who saw me. With a light jog, I kept up the pace while following the rapidly disappearing raven. The gravel crunched under my exhausted shoes as the tears slid down my face.
I couldn't have two deaths in one week.
"Keep holding on, Ashton." I murmured to my cat, softly stroking his cheek. When I reached the end of the gravel road, I halted, waiting. I stood there, anxiously hanging around for who I expected. After what happened yesterday, I doubted she would appear.
With the raven disappearing in the distance, my hope for saving the cat was fading.
