Curtains Close; Take a bow. I think we fooled all of them now.
Chapter 56 - Lingered In The Splendor
Oli's POV
Hanley was running a temperature and had been asleep all evening. I hoped he would be better by tomorrow, because we wouldn't be able to get him to see a doctor. He wasn't signed in the records, so to the hospital, he doesn't exist.
"Oi, Oli, you ready?" Danny was leant against the back wall, his hands in his pockets. He starred at me for a little while, raising his eyes and examining my expression. "Got the keys." He said, yanking them from his pocket and proceeding to walk straight to the car.
The drive in the car was quiet. He only asked about how Hanley was. And how Rain was doing. He didn't seem to want to talk about anything else. But I was patient with him, watching him closely and making sure that he cheering up.
We sat in the bar, unmoored and silhouetted by everyone around us. Some men with beards were laughing about, watching the football and splashing pints of beer everywhere. Danny stared at the wall, and occasionally sipped his drink.
"Danny. Mate. You need to tell me what's up." I finally said, exhausted from his secrecy.
He looked me dead in the eye. "You haven't worked it out yet, have you?"
I stuttered. "Worked out what?"
"You've gone and busted the system. You were supposed to kill Rain, but you didn't. You know what happens when you don't kill someone?"
I took a deep breath. I had never even thought about it. I thought nobody had noticed. "What?"
"Someone else you know, has to die. It's in return. So you know who was chosen to die after you saved Rain?"
I swallowed hard. No way.
"That's right. SJ. She knew. She knew she was going to have to die for Rain. That's why she hated Rain at the beginning. And she knew damn well that she was never going to see her baby." He slammed his empty glass down on the counter, to which the bartender grabbed it and started to wipe it with his dishcloth.
My hands felt sweaty. What had I done? I hadn't saved anyone.
"And what did we go and do? Save her again from a bloody plane wreck. Do you know what that means?"
I shook my head.
"It means, Oliver, that someone else is going to die in your life."
I rubbed my chin and thought for a second. "But I only have you and Hanley left..."
"Exactly. If I had known that saving her would have been a suicide mission for myself and my boyfriend..."
I butted in. "Why does your boyfriend have to die?"
"Because..." He stopped and stared at the counter. "Because I helped you save her. So someone in my life had to die."
I tried to get my head round it. "But why did you make him leave?"
A tear fell from his eye and he blinked softly, desperately trying to hold back his emotions. "Anthony never left. He died in my arms. He told me. Explained all of this to me. And he cried to me as his heart stopped. He loved me Oliver. He really did. And now he's dead."
Suddenly I remembered. My heart skipped a beat as I remembered. "We need to get back, now!" I shouted, throwing a few notes at the confused bartender. I grabbed Danny's arm and dragged him quickly to the car, fumbling through the keys and starting up the car.
Danny looked at me with wide eyes. "Why? What's the matter?"
"Hanley is sick!" I screamed, racing down the road.
