It never ends

Practice went fine. I met the rest of the team, they were all nice, some nicer than others. But one question still burned the back of my mind. What were they talking about? I don’t like not knowing something that everyone else seems to know. It was bugging me.

“Okay everyone, that’s it next practice is in 4 days, Don’t be late” Katherine said loudly, her voice echoed off the walls of the gym, I’m pretty sure you could hear her outside. She then turned around and grabbed her water bottle. Everyone was sweating and panting. It was hot in the gym, or was it just me?

As I was getting ready to call oliver I walked out the gym. Everyone was talking and I wouldn’t be able to hear.

I looked up, some girls were getting in their car and others were just standing by their cars talking. In the corner of the room I saw a familiar face in a grey beanie. It was alex, the guy who accidentally poured his drink over my shirt. He looked up at me and smiled.

“hey, I know you, skyler right?” he said putting his phone in his back pocket.

“yea alex,um what are you doing here?” alex walked over to me.

“I came to pick up Katherine”

“is she your girlfriend?” I asked curiously. Alex’s face turned red, but not embarrassment, he was shocked.

“hell no, she’s my pain in the ass sister” I almost gasped. I wasn’t really expecting that.

“sister? Really, I wouldn’t suspect Katherine to be your sister”

“nobody ever does, we’re not much alike”

A few more girls came through the doors. Tris was among them, she looked at me and waved, I waved back.

“so who are you doing waiting out here for?” alex asked. The building was getting quieter and I realized I told oliver I’d call him.

“ugh I forgot, I had to call him, but he should be here in10 minutes” alex nodded and I backed away so I could get my phone out and dial olivers number. It rang twice before I heard him answer.

“hello” he answered.

“hey oliver, can you come get me?” there was a pause before he responded.

“umm sure, be there in a little while”, he sounded a bit unsure. I was gonna say something but immediately he hung up. I was a bit suspicious. What? Was what I was thinking. I pushed it out of my head. I’m not gonna get hung up on that.

I turned around, Katherine had come out and was talking to some people soccer players who apparently had practice in the back of the building. They were all surrounding her, I saw alex standing there, he looked so uncomfortable, he was looking anywhere but his sister and the athletes. It was actually a bit amusing. I was thinking about leaving him but I figured he was too nice to just leave there.

“alex!” I called, the soccer players didn’t even move or turn around. Katherine glanced but when she saw it was me she turned back to talking. Alex quickly walked over to me. When he got out of their little circle he managed a little smile.

“thanks” he said as he stood next to me.


“don’t worry about it, does that always happen?”

“sometimes, I try to ask her to get out before the soccer players get let out but she never listens, I know she likes the attention” alex was laughing at himself.

“yea seems like it” at that moment the front door opened. In stepped oliver, he had changed into a black t-shirt with a tiger pouncing position. His hair was a bit messy. Our eyes immediately locked.

“well I guess you’re leaving now” alex said. The guys were finally starting to part from Katherine.

“yea, maybe we’ll bump into each other later” I said as he was starting to walk towards Katherine.

“maybe” he said. Katherine was waving to the guys and started talking to alex. They don’t look alike at all, not even act alike.

I walked over to oliver, his gaze was locked on alex. I took his hand and led him out the building. His car was parked right in the front, completely ignoring the ‘Do not park here: fire hazard” signs clearly right there. Oliver’s disregard for authority was amusing. I was in a pretty good mood. I could laugh at almost anything.

When we got in the car I started to remember. What was that girls name? started with an e…ellie…Elaine…emma. Emma! It was emma, it’s a bit clearer now. I was debating with myself on whether or not to ask oliver about her. I was curious. But I don’t know if he was gonna get mad or… might as well ask, it’ll come up sooner or later.

“oliver, can I ask you something?”

“is it something serious” it wasn’t really, depends on what the answer is.

“not really, I don’t think so, there was a girl at practice, her name was emma” I paused to see if he had any reaction, he didn’t, he kept his eyes on the road. So I continued talking.

“she said she knew you, well sort of, but I’m guessing she did, you know her”

“emma…no, doesn’t ring a bell, why?”

I shrugged my shoulders. “no reason, just asking. I’m not sure if I like that emma girl. She seems like a trouble maker.

We came to a long road. It looked old, there were cracks in the road and there were long strips of black tar. There was a small crowd gathered along the sidewalk. I saw scarlett and Austin and everybody else near a large black box. They seemed pretty excited. I wonder why.
Oliver parked and I followed him out. I then realized I was still dressed in my volleyball practice outfit which was shorts and a shirt. I felt exposed and I didn’t like it. I didn’t have a jacket. I stopped walking which made oliver stop and turn around.

“oliver do you have a jacket or something?” I asked. He looked over my outfit. He quickly walked over to the car and pulled out a black jacket.

“here” he said handing it to me. It was big and fit loosely but it was better than nothing. I followed him back to the crowd and kellin was the first to see me.

“skyler hey!” he said smiling. Oliver and austin started talking and walked over to the black box.

“hey kellin, what’s going on?” I asked. His smile got wider,

“fireworks”
