It never ends

“fireworks!” I got excited, I loved fireworks. My parents never really approved of fireworks. They always said they were for the reckless and poor. I didn’t really believe that but I remember how I got my grandparents in trouble for asking them to take me to a 4th of july fireworks show. I loved them for the recklessness , the loudness, they were so bright and beautiful.

“I see you’re excited” vic said appearing next to me.

“well yea, I haven’t seen fireworks in years” they both gave me surprised looks.

“are you serious!” kellin said, his eyes were wide. I was a tiny bit confused, was this firework thing a regular thing? I felt like I was missing out on a lot.

“yea, my parents never really…well… liked fireworks, they said they were reckless” I didn’t tell them the last part. I feared how they would react.

“well you get to see them today” kellin smiled sweetly and turned towards the back box where oliver and austin were. They were unloading things. I turned back towards scarlett who was chatting with celeste.

Celeste noticed me and rolled her eyes, I don’t even care about what she thinks right now. I’m still in a good mood.

“look who showed up” celeste said with disgust. “What are you wearing, if you’re even wearing anything, I wouldn’t be surprised” I looked down at what I was wearing. The length of olivers jacket was at my thigh and covered my shorts which made me look naked. But that still gave celeste no right to call it out. I don’t know why she doesn’t like me. I don’t care but I want to know.

“celeste stop” scarlett said. “hey skyler, where have you been?”


“I was just at volleyball practice” scarlett’s expression hardened for a little bit.

“I know some people on that team, do you know a girl named tris?” I nodded. “has she said anything about me?” maybe… it was a while ago and I don’t wanna start drama by saying yes and she really didn’t.

“no” I said. “not that I can recall” scarlett seemed to be out for a little while but quickly came back.

“ouu well, let’s get to the front before all the spots are taken. I followed scarlett to the middle of the street where there was a piece of white tape that clearly meant you shouldn’t cross it. There were a lot of people here and people were starting to line up against the tape. Austin and kellin were at the end of the road lighting a box up.

Suddenly I felt a pair of arms wrap around my waist. Olivers scent lingered in the air and I happily breathed it in. I turned my head and rested it on his chest.

“hey” he said in my ear, his voice gave me chills.

“hey” I repeated “what were you doing?” I asked referring to him and austin messing with that black box. I turned around facing him. It may sound weird, but how was it possible someone could look so flawless. There was literally nothing wrong. At all.

“help setting them up, one wrong move and we all blow up” oliver said with a grin, my eyes fell down to Oliver’s lips. I wanted to, but something was keeping me from doing so. Suddenly, he grabbed my chin and pulled my head up, forcing me to look in his eyes. Before I could perceive what he what he was doing, his pink, soft lips crashed down onto mine.

A few seconds later oliver leaned back, our foreheads were pressed together.

“look” he said moving his eyes beyond me. I turned around. Austin had just lit a match and a bright spark of white exploded in a line along the road. It was loud and I’m happy that white strip was there or someone would’ve gotten burned. Scarlett and a couple others cheered while austin and vic set up another one. I smiled as I watched another one shoot up into the air and explode into large blue and green dots.
The sky was getting darker and more fireworks were set off. All kinds. From across the street I saw a tall blonde with a familiar face. Katherine. She had changed out of her practice clothes into a loose white dress with a thin black belt that showed off her long legs. In comparison she made everyone else around her look inferior. She wasn’t looking at the fireworks. She was staring up ahead at the road. I turned my head to look. She was staring at austin. he glanced at her and smiled. Was something going on between them?

A few more fireworks went off and scarlett gently elbowed me.

“I gotta go to the bathroom, I don’t wanna go alone, it’s scary”.

“sure” I said. I wiggled out of oliver arms but he tightened his grip.

“where are you going?” he asked.

“just with scarlett” I answered. He sighed and let go.

“don’t be long” he said. I squeezed his hand in response and followed scarlett out towards a back building. I heard the fireworks stop and a faint voice in the background. As we walked around a corner and scarlett turned to me

“I wanna tell you something skyler, I wanted to tell celeste but I know she wouldn’t be much help” her voice was serious.

“what?”I asked

Scarlett took a deep breath and looked around as if looking for something. She tucked her red hair behind her ear and looked at me.

“things are getting pretty serious between me and austin and I’m thinking about asking him to meet my parents but I don’t know how he’ll take it , I mean he’s never done that sort of thing before, I don’t think he’s taking this as seriously as I am, so basically what I’m asking is. Should I ya know ask him?” I saw the seriousness and nervousness in her voice and facial expression. She was awaiting my reaction.

“well if you both like each other I saw go for it” scarlett smiled and hugged me, I was a bit shocked at first but I quickly went through with it.

It was nice knowing scarlett trusted me and my judgement enough. It was also sweet she may have found her love.


“okay stay right here, I won’t be long” scarlett said as she went inside a small coffee shop. I don’t understand why she wanted me to come along. Maybe so she personally wouldn’t feel lonely, but the cashier was here. But I guess she wanted someone who she knew.

A few seconds later I heard a voice. It was a giggle. I heard a moan and I realized it was coming from the side of the building. I knew I shouldn’t look but I was a curious person and this was going to bug me if I didn’t check it out.

I slowly walked over to the corner of the building and glanced through the side. I gasped as I covered my mouth. It was austin and Katherine against the wall.

Austin paused and turned his head to look at me, his eyes got wide and we both froze. He whispered something under his breath before letting Katherine go. Katherine seductively smiled before moving away she looked at me and smiled regular.

“hey skyler” she waved before disappearing, I was frozen in place, I was in shock. Austin walked up to me. He knew what he’d done.

“AUSTIN!” I yelled, finally managing to get some words out. “WHAT ! how could you!!!” I was furious.

“shh! Skyler please don’t tell scarlett”

“Don’t tell scarlett!!??, you just…you…. YOU CHEATER!!” austins face was red.

“I know I know just-“ I backed away.

“How could you!!” I would’ve said more but the coffee shop door swung open and scarlett stepped out, she immediately went to austin who tensed up, scarlett noticed and spoke.

“did I miss something?” she asked looking at me concerned. I wanted to tell her, tell her everything I just saw. But my mouth wouldn’t let me. Austin watched my every move”

“no, nothing at all” and I stormed off. I couldn’t be there anymore. Austin had messed up and sooner or later scarlett was going to find out.

The fireworks had ended and everyone was spreading out. I looked around for oliver, who was nowhere to be found. Suddenly I felt a hand grabbed mine and I jumped before looking whose it was. It was oliver.

“what’s wrong?” he must’ve sensed something wrong. Or it may be because I was more on edge than usual.

“nothing” I lied. I didn’t wanna talk about this with him.
