One Hundred Sleepless Nights

Peace Offerings

If there's one thing I really cannot stand it is hospitals. I try not to think about it when it's me lying in the hospital bed, but when it's someone else I could spend days complaining about our joke of a healthcare system. I usually start with how the hospital wards smell like the stuff you wrap your sandwiches up in and work my way up.
I've been sat in the chair next at Austin's bedside, making them both listen to my theories of what the nurses do in their office. I say eating chocolate, but Alan disagrees. I saw someone hovering outside of Austin's room. It was when they turned I saw Jemma. Definitely Jemma, not Jemma 2. I panicked, not wanting to stress Austin out and threw my jacket onto his face, which I've probably made bleed.
"Zee!" Austin exclaimed.
"Are you okay?" Alan asked cautiously.
"What the hell?" Austin groaned.
"Sorry! My boobs are leaking!" they both looked pretty grossed out and pretty terrified. That one works just like the old, I got my period.
I got up out of the chair and went outside into the corridor. Jemma saw me and I offered her a small smile. She creased her brows before reluctantly smiling back. "How's Austin?" she rushed.
"Um, okay." I shrugged. "You know... bleeding."
"I can't believe Oli did that."
"Yeah, well he did. And he didn't even hang around after." I replied. "Did Oli tell you?"
"Oh no. But I mean how obvious is it that he beat Austin up." she laughed humourlessly. "It happened right outside the studio where Oli's band were recording. I just can't believe he did it."
"Austin is denying it." I sighed.
"What do you mean? I thought you and Vic were there."
"We were." I nodded. "But he told the doctors and the cops when they came that he couldn't remember what happened."
"And that's a lie?"
"A complete lie." I agreed.
"I hate this." Jemma mumbled. "Zandra, I still can't forgive him for what he did to me."
"He regrets it. He completely regrets it." I told her. Jemma turned and looked through the window to peek at Austin, who now had Alan dabbing his face. Whoops.
"Jemma, he deserves a break." I said.
"He looks so cute." Cute? Some people and their damn fetishes.
"Um yeah."
"Can I go in?"
"Sure." I agreed.
Jemma went to the door and walked inside. I followed her and Alan turned around. He backed away from Austin and came over to me once. "Shit's about to go down." Alan muttered.
"Shut up." I snapped and tried not to giggle.
"What happened?" Jemma demanded.
"Jemma?" Austin asked.
"Yeah, so what happened?"
"Nothing." Austin mumbled.
"Who did it?"
"No one." he mumbled again.
"Come on, Austin. I know it was Oli."
Austin's eyes widened before he looked at his bed sheets. "Don't know what you mean. I haven't seen Oli since the charity show."
"He's not a good liar." Alan said, rather loudly. Poor Alan isn't very tactful.
I felt the baby kick and looked down at my stomach. I wish Vic was here. He always loves it when the baby kicks. Even if it is happening all of the time. It would still be nice for him to share it with me.
"Zee?" Alan asked. "Are you okay?"
Damn it, not again. Why do I always fucking cry?! I wiped my eyes and sniffled. Alan wrapped his arm around me and pulled me to his side.
"The baby kicked." I explained.
"Again?" he sighed. He wasn't talking about the baby kicking.
"I'm sorry!" I exclaimed.
"Let's go outside." he urged.
We went outside and stood out in the corridor. Alan pulled me to his chest and gave me a hug. "Thanks." I muttered.
"Just stop crying." he begged.
"Fine." I huffed.
"Stop being pregnant." Alan rolled his eyes.
"I can't!"
"Shut up." Alan said and gave me a squeeze before he pulled away.
My phone started ringing and I sniffed. I got it out and answered. "Hello?" I sniffled.
"Zee, is that you?" Mike asked.
"Yeah." I grumbled.
"What's wrong?"
"The baby kicked."
"Is that wrong?"
"No, but it made me cry." I said heavily and Alan patted my back.
"Okay, well I need you to come to my parents place."
"Oh no! Not after last time." I refused.
"Come on, please."
"No!" I refused.
"Vic is there and he needs to see you urgently." Mike said.
"Why? What's wrong?"
"Um, he won't tell anyone! He's asking for you."
"Give me twenty minutes." I groaned. I hung up and turned to Alan. "I need to go."
"What? Why?" Alan asked.
"I need to see Vic. He needs me urgently."
"What's happened?"
"I don't know. But Mike is making it sound like he's had a breakdown." I explained. "Tell Austin I said bye." I added and kissed Alan's cheek.
"Okay, bye." Alan said.
I pulled away and started down the corridor. Walking takes a hell of a lot longer than it used to. I took my time getting outside and to the car. If Vic is really having a breakdown I'm really not much help. I started driving and got out onto the road.
When I arrived at Vic's parents house I parked up. I got out of the car and went towards the door. It was open so I walked through and closed the door behind me.
"Vic!" I called.
I walked into the sitting room and searched for Vic. All I found was Vic's mom and a man I was guessing was Vic's dad. I frowned at them and Vic's mom stood up. I backed away but stopped. Oh you bastard, Mike.
"Can we talk?" Vic's mom asked.
"Um do we have to?" I asked.
"Please."
"Whatever." I muttered. I went to sit down and crossed my arms on top of my bump crossly.
"You're Zandra. I'm Victor, Vic's father. It's lovely to finally meet you." he said. Why can't Vic's mom be like that?
"Thanks. It's good to meet you too."
"You're not the kind of girl Vic normally brings home. You're very classically beautiful. None of that old rubbish." I don't know what that means. "But then again he didn't bring you home." he joked.
"Oh yeah, ha." I muttered. I haven't been this awkward since Kellin walked in on me waxing my bikini line.
"Zandra, I want to apologise. I'm sorry for what I said. I'm very happy that you kept the baby because it is making my son happy. So I'm grateful." she said sincerely.
"It's okay. I guess." I shrugged. I don't like this change from the wicked witch of the west to Dorothy.
"I have a peace offering." Vic's mom or I guess I should call her Vivian said. She held a package out for me. I took it and saw it was wrapped in tissue paper. I tore at it and found a hand knitted cardigan. "I made it for you, or well for the baby." I guess we're not in Kansas anymore.
"Thanks?" I tried.
"I thought you'd like it." she beamed back at me. Okay Zee, don't cry.
