The List
#3 Climb a Tree
I looked up at the huge tree before me. It was too tall and had an uncountable number of branches. I gulped at looked at the boys. They smiled at me and I took a step back. “Don’t be a wuss,” Jaime teased.
“I’m afraid of heights,”
“You’ve broken into an office for fuck sake,” Mike said.
“Hey, Jaime’s scared of the dark,” Tony reminded them.
“Really?” I asked.
“Thanks, man,” Jaime sighed.
“I guess it still counts if you just go half way up,” Vic thought.
“What if I fall?” I asked seriously.
“We’ll catch you?” Mike offered.
“Gee, thanks,” I mumbled. I walked forwards and looked up. “Can I have a leg up?” I asked and Mike came to help me. He lifted me and I grabbed a branch. I pulled myself up and went to the next and the next. I found myself closing my eyes as I climbed, not wanting to look up or down. But I got to the half-way point and stopped. I sat up on the branch and gathered up the courage to look down. I saw the boys where I had left them, Mike still at the bottom of the tree. I waved and heard laughing.
“Yes, Kayleigh!” Vic called. I grinned but stopped. I heard a snapping sound coming from the tree. I looked at the branch and saw it breaking. “Please, no,” I whispered.
“You okay?!” Mike called. But I didn't have time to respond. The branch snapped and sent me hurling towards the ground. I tried to grab onto something but failed terribly. I felt Mike try to catch me but I forced us both onto the ground. I hand landed on top of him with his face crushed into the ground.
“Whoops,” I whispered.
“Are you okay?” Mike groaned.
“Erm. . . I think so,” I replied. “Are you?” I asked.
“Kay'," he groaned.
“Sorry,” I offered.
“Has he broken his hands? Because we need a drummer,” Jaime asked.
“Not my hands,” Mike said and got slowly up. He looked down onto the ground at the branch he’d just been lying on. “Shit,” he breathed and held his crotch.
