Walk with the Dead

Lynn Gunn?

I wanted to ask Vic about the fact his brother knew who I was but I couldn't seem to find any time to be alone with him. It was like fate didn't want me to find out. Every time I tried to speak to him alone someone would interrupt. After two days at the campsite and no fatal walker attacks, I finally gained the courage to ask to go to the city.

It wasn't really clear whom was in charge here or if anyone was specifically running the whole camp. I tracked Vic down, he was in a cabin reading a book. The door was open but he didn't notice I was there so I just stood staring at him. What hurts my brain the most is that I can't put my finger on who he is, where he came from or why it feels like I know him more than my brain is allowing me to know right now.

His eyes danced across the pages of the book he was reading, so effortlessly. It was kinda relaxing to see someone so peaceful in such a chaotic world. His expression changed from relaxed to perplexed within a matter of seconds. Without warning he looked up in my direction which caught me completely off guard. “Sorry, I didn't mean to creep on you.” I said quietly, my face facing towards the ground to hide the fact it fully turned red.

I looked up slightly to see he had placed the book on the couch beside him. “No, it's fine. What's up?” He smiled at me.

That was my cue to step inside and sit next to him on the couch. “I wanna go into the city, I think I remember where my apartment was.” I explained to him.

His left eyebrow rose up. “You do? Where?”

“Vantage Pointe apartments.” I mumbled. The hazy memory came to me last night while I was trying to sleep.

“We can go there if you want but we can't go alone.” Vic told me. I could almost feel myself deflate at the thought of it. I really wanted to grill him about the whole Mike thing.

“Okay, I'll ask Tony if he wants to come with us.” I said as I got up off the couch and left the cabin. Tony wasn't someone who spoke a lot but for some reason he liked to talk to me. It was a nice feeling to have someone who wants to talk to me.

I crept over to his cabin and knocked on the door. After a minute or so the door swung open to reveal Tony standing there with a solemn look on his face. “Alice?” He asked with a slightly surprised look upon his face.

“Do you wanna come to the city with me and Vic, I remembered where I lived before my accident last night and now I wanna go and have a look at my apartment to see if there's anything else there to help me remember my life before all of this.” I explained to him. Tony gave me a hard look but then his face softened.

“Sure, I would love to help you out.” Tony nodded down at me. He stepped back into the cabin. “But first, I want you to learn how to shoot a gun. Lynn can teach you, you just gotta speak to her and she will help you out.” He said as he walked back out with a hand gun in the palm of his hand. I stared at it blankly. I was awful with guns, not that I had much practice but I went paint balling once and I shot myself.
“Where is she?” I asked.

“Down but the creek, it won't take long.” He smiled at me. I took the gun into my hand and stared at it.

“Thanks Tony.” I whispered, he just nodded again and stepped back into cabin and closed the door. I looked down at the gun and sighed.

I walked down to the creek and found Lynn there, doing some exercises. She looked at peace so it made me feel awkward about the fact I was going to ask her to help me shoot a gun.

I stepped on a really crunchy branch and it made a horribly loud noise, which brought attention to me. Lynn looked at me and laughed a little. “You need to work on the stealth walking.” She grinned as she bent down and picked up a bottle of water off the sandy ground.

“At least I'm quieter than those things.” I stated.

She raised an eyebrow at what I had said. “Why don't you just call them walkers or biters or some other bullshit name. They're not people anymore anyway.” She said as she approached me. She gazed down to the gun in my hand. “Let me guess, you want some help learning how to use that thing?” She smirked.

“It would be useful when killing the biters.” I grinned at her. She looked at me with a huge smile on her face.

“See, you're getting it now.” She took the gun from my hand and led me down to the water. “Remember to have the safety off when you're in a situation that could most likely go bad. Obviously we don't know when or where that could happen but it's kinda important to guess and guess right.” She pointed to where the safety was. “There is no knack to shooting a gun really, I grew up in Boston and my dad made us all learn when we were young, so it's kinda like everything else. You just gotta practice.”

“I can't shoot things for shit though.” I pointed out.

“You'll get the hang of it.” She said blankly. “Anyway, don't pull the trigger, squeeze it. See that red flag tied to the tree over there? Aim for it and shoot.” She told me. I looked at her and did as she asked me to.

I stared down the barrel of the gun and pressed down on the trigger but I missed. The pull from the gun shocked me. “I'm gonna lose my arm, what the fuck?” I groaned loudly.

“It wasn't the worst now try again.” She pointed at the flag. I copied my moves again and still missed.

“This is going to be the death of me.” I sighed.

“Take a deep breath, don't think about it. There's a walker coming for you and it's you or it. SHOOT!” She encouraged me.

I closed my eyes and squeezed the trigger. When I opened my eyes I realised that I had finally hit it. “I did it.” I mumbled.

“You did, well done but I tend to not close my eyes when I know there's some flesh eating creeps in my presence so don't do that often.” She laughed and shook her head at me.

“Thank you. Hopefully I won't need it today though.” I looked out at the lake in front of us.

“One thing I've learned recently is that you always need it. There's no slowing down, no relaxing and definitely no letting your guard down. You just don't have the time anymore. Nothing is worth the risk of what you could lose.” She looked at her feet, avoiding my gaze. Something awful happened to her but I didn't wanna press the matter and make her even more upset.

I put my hand on her shoulder and squeezed it. She looked up and gave me a grateful smile. “Thanks.”

She just nodded though.

After another half an hour of shooting and wasting way too many bullets, I convinced Tony I was ready to go. Vic got into one of the cars that were already at the camp. He pulled up in front of me and Tony and we got in. I sat in the passengers seat and Tony got in the back.

Vic looked at me and I gave him a small smile. “You ready for this?” He asked.

“As I'll ever be.” I mumbled and looked out the window, I watched the campsite grow smaller and smaller as we drove off into the distance, towards my past.
