Walk with the Dead

Run this Town

I thought as soon as we got outside that it might become more clear what had happened but to my disappointment, we were still as clueless as when we were inside the building. The funny thing is that it feels as though I know Vic from somewhere. I can't put my finger on where from though. It's like when you have a dream about someone and you feel like you know their face but you've never seen them before in your life. It's kinda like that.

We weaved through the cars and bodies of the living dead, avoiding anything dangerous. As wimpy as it sounds though I don't want to hurt anyone. Although it doesn't seem like these things feel anything at all.

Vic spotted a car about ten feet away from us which seemed to be in pretty good shape considering the events around us. “Come on.” He motioned for me to follow him towards the car. He opened the driver's door with ease and a smile crept across his face. I felt a little better when he slid into the drivers seat and held up a set of keys. “At least we have a ride out of here.” Vic stated.

I scurried around the car to the passengers side and got in. An instinct in me said to check the backseat so I looked back and it was empty. “We should definitely check cars before going into them.” I laughed nervously. He gave me a small nod, indicating that he agreed with my point.

He started the car and it roared to life, leaving me with the thought. How long had it been sitting here before we found it? How long were we out of it?

Vic drove out of the parking lot and out onto the main road, swerving a few bits of debris as he went. It kinda made me feel nervous in a way, I didn't know this guy at all. On the other hand though I don't even know myself.

“Where do you stay?” He asked without taking his eyes off of the road. I tried so hard to think of an address or even a name but nothing came to mind.

“I don't remember anything. The last thing I do remember was moving to San Diego about 5 years ago but that is it.” I told him.

He glanced at me for a second and then looked back at the road with a solemn look on his face. “You don't remember anything? That sucks. I can't even take you home or anything.” He sighed.

“Sorry, if you wanna go home then that's fine and I'll try and find my way somehow.” I said as I looked out the window of the car. It was strange out there. The grass passed us by but in the distance you could see the living dead walk aimlessly.

“I don't really think that's a good idea though, do you?” He asked. It brought me back to reality though and made me realise that I had nowhere to go. I was basically homeless and who knows how bad it is out there.

I felt tears prick at the corners of my eyes but I tried so hard not to let them fall though. Showing this stranger that I'm weak isn't on my list of things to do today, granted neither was a fucking apocalypse. But I couldn't hold it back for long, after all I am human. It was like a dam being opened up, a facet being turned on. Once it starts, it's not easy to stop.

My shaky hand attempted to wiped away the tears that were cascading down my face by this point but it was useless. The more I rubbed them away the more that fell. Vic pulled over to the side of the road but the car stayed silent, well other than my pathetic whimpering.

“Look this is a crazy thing to wake up to. I don't even know why I was in the hospital. I never had an injury but I don't remember this all happening.” Vic spoke up. I looked up at him with confused eyes.

“You have a cut on your head.” I pointed out, through my sad tears. He frowned and then pulled the sun visor down and looked in the mirror. His hand brushed over the cut.

“Well that's new to me.” A sarcastic laugh escaped his lips. “Anyway, I doubt that's why I was there and I hope I can remember soon but until then I kinda don't feel comfortable just leaving you on your own when you barely even know your own name. You understand right?” He turned to face me again.

I couldn't answer that though, not vocally. I didn't always have much faith in strangers but sometimes they'd come through for other people. I mean we're all just strangers in the end.

“We should try the city?” I suggested. He thought for a second and then nodded.

“I live in the city but we gotta be real careful because there's a really big chance that it could be completely overrun.” Vic said as he started up the car again. I wiped away the final tears that dropped and chuckled.

“I'm really gonna have to toughen up if I wanna survive this shit.” I laughed. Vic smiled and nodded in agreement.

It hit me like deja vu, the feeling that I know Vic but I still couldn't put my finger on it.

Suddenly a guy ran out onto the road about 10 feet in front of us waving his arms around and yelling so Vic pulled over just next to him and rolled the window down. The guy sprinted over to us, panting and sweating. “Th-thank you for stopping.” He spluttered.

“What's wrong?” Vic asked politely. I studied the guys features, he had longish black hair that flicked to the side a little. His arms were clad in tattoos and a pretty revealing tank top. His skinny jeans were black and ripped at the knees. He didn't have a weapon on him, well one that could be seen anyway but he was covered in blood.

“Other than the impending doom that we all face, getting our flesh ripped off of our bones? Oh nothing much man.” The guy said sarcastically. Vic shrugged and started the engine again. “No wait, sorry I was just trying to lighten the mood a little.” He reached out to the car and grabbed the window slot.

Vic looked at me and I just gave him a sad look. “Well what can we do for you there stranger?” Vic asked sarcastically. The dude grinned from ear to ear.

“Look, I've had a pretty rough fucking day. My best friend just got eaten alive so I've been looking for some people to just be with. It's hard out here you know.” I gave the guy a sympathetic look.

“What's your name?” I asked him.

“Kellin.” He said softly.
“Well Kellin this is your lucky day, get in.” I ordered him. Vic looked at me and squinted his eyes.

“Thank you guys so much.” Kellin said enthusiastically as he got comfortable in the back seat. “I swear guys if you guys can just give me a ride to my camp then I'm pretty sure that you would be welcome to stay with us.” Kellin told us.

I turned in my seat to look at him. “Where is your camp?” I asked him.

“10 miles west. Give or take.” He nodded into the horizon. Vic nodded and started the car up and began driving towards where Kellin told us to go.

“Can you shed some details about this whole thing for us?” I questioned Kellin. “I was in a coma and have no idea what happened. I just woke up today and so did Vic. Also I'm Alice by the way.” I felt like I just unloaded a shit ton of information on the guy.

“Okay, well it all started about 3 weeks ago, people started to get really sick. The government tried to hide it and of course like everything the government do, it failed. People started to come back from the dead. Well not the ones already dead. I don't really know why or how it happens. Just don't let them bite you or scratch you. They're easy to detect and you need to destroy their brain or they'll just come right back at you.” He explained with a high level of concentration on his face.

“So is this camp a military thing?” Vic joined in, looking at Kellin in the rear view mirror.

Kellin laughed sarcastically. “Dude the whole world's defense system failed within about 3 days. The cities were bombed and burned down. Well, that's an exaggeration but they dropped napalm in the streets of San Diego.” He sat forward to get closer to us. “Shit went down and we are on our own. There's no government, no police and no military. We're on our own. The new world order, literally survival of the fittest.”

I looked at Vic and he gave me a worried look. “So that's it?” Vic furrowed his eyebrows.

“Basically dude but it's not all doom and gloom, I heard One Direction hit the dust last week.” Kellin grinned at us.

“I feel sick.” I said quietly.

“Look, I'm pretty sure this is gonna blow over soon. It's like some bad case of rabies. It can't go on forever.” Kellin tried to reassure me but it wasn't going to work. The deed was done. He had successfully killed any hope I had.

“Think it's time for Kellin to shut up and watch the beautiful flesh eating scenery surrounding San Diego.” Kellin mumbled and sat back in his seat.

“It's gonna be okay.” Vic whispered to me. I felt his hand on my leg and he gave it a reassuring squeeze. I looked down at his hand and I felt like this had happened before.

I turned my head and concentrated on the surroundings of the car, watching people walk aimlessly through fields and forests. One day that could be me.

“Take this left here and then it'll lead you up a hill and it's basically on the right.” Kellin instructed Vic, whom did exactly as Kellin said.

Once we got to the camp site there were a few cabins and an RV. Vic looked at me and then the RV again. “I know this place, we used to come here during summer vacation because it was cheaper than a real holiday.” Vic pointed out as we got out the car.

A girl and 3 guys came out of one cabin and Vic pretty much sprinted for them. “Vic you're alive?!” One dude pretty much screamed at Vic. They met in the middle and hugged. “Alice?” He said looking at me.

“Mike shut up.” Vic said quickly.

“Wait how do you know my name?” I asked as I walked over to them.

“Just leave it now okay.” Vic said to me quickly. I frowned at him but nodded.

“I'm Mike by the way.” The dude that Vic was talking to introduced himself to me. He had a snap back on and some cargo shorts and a plain tank top. He had more tattoos than Kellin though. The two other guys and the girl walked over to us.

“Guy's this is Vic and Alice, they saved my butt out there.” Kellin caught up to us.

“Where's Justin?” The girl asked.

“He didn't make it.” Kellin looked away and she nodded.

“I'm Lyndsey.” The girl announced and then walked away, she seemed really distant from the whole thing. Her hair was long and mousy brown, shaved at one side. She wore high waist skinny jeans and a black crop top.

“I'm Jaime and this is Tony.” The two other guys introduced themselves. Jaime had spiky black hair, jeans and a black shirt on. He had one sleeve and cute dimples. Tony had a snap back on, loads of tattoos and pretty much the same attire as the others. I guess there are fashion rules to be in this group.

“It's nice to meet you guys under such shitty situations.” I laughed bitterly. Thankfully though, they all laughed.

“Vic can I talk to you?” Mike asked, nodding towards the RV. Vic was reluctant at first but he eventually nodded and followed Mike into the RV, leaving me with Tony, Jaime and Kellin.

“This is awkward right?” I laughed nervously. Jaime smiled, showing his dimples off.

“Come on, let's get you some food and water.” He nodded towards one of the cabins. I smiled at him, thankful for the hospitality and friendliness. Despite the world ending, today was shaping up to be, alright. In a strangely twisted way.
