Chapter 30

I got home and I was so scared to see what my house was like. Was it going to be messy, empty? I don’t really know. Jaime pulled me out the car and placed me in the wheel chair. There was an improvised ramp placed over the stairs which were out the front.

I could feel tears forming in my eyes. I watched my feet as we entered the house. I looked around and there were pictures hung along the hallway. I saw glimpse of them before I was wheeled into the living room.

I was expecting a bunch of people to be in there but it was only Sarah and Vic. Sarah smiled to me and I smiled back.

‘Welcome home Stel. It’s going to be like it was before. The four of us living under the same roof again.’ Sarah said from the couch.

‘You guys live here?’ I questioned.

‘Yeah, we brought a house together, because Jaime and I travel with the band and all, you two would have been in the same house anyway so we made it easier.’ Vic said.

Jaime stopped rolling the chair next to the couch and he walked into the kitchen. Ruby jumped off my lap and moved over to Sarah’s lap. She gave her a kiss on the check before jumping into Vic’s lap.

‘Mummy’s home Uncle Vic.’ Ruby said to him. He looked over to me and smiled before looking to her.

‘She sure is.’ He replied. Ruby looked at me and gave me a big smile while I wiped away some tears.

‘Welcome home Stel. Here, I made you your favourite cake.’ Jaime said as he walked back into the lounge. I looked over to him as he walked in with an ice-cream looking cake.

‘Is that an ice-cream cake?’ I asked, looking to Jaime.

‘You remember an ice-cream cake?’ Sarah questioned.

‘I guess so.’ I replied.

‘This is progress. The last time we had ice-cream cake was when you actually went into labour and you didn’t even get to eat any.’ Vic mentioned.

*Back to past*

‘Stella, I know that you are hungry but why won’t you eat?’ Jaime asked. He walked into the room and frowned at me.

‘I don’t want normal food, I want ice-cream cake.’ I argued back.

‘Stella, honey. You can’t be eating bad a couple weeks before your due date.’ He said.

‘I want ice-cream cake Jaime.’ I said as I looked away.

‘Oli, your daughter is being such a pain, you talk to her.’ Jaime said as he walked out the room. I heard dad groan before he walked into the room and stood in front of me.

‘Stella, you haven’t been this stubborn since you were six. Why are you being difficult now? Am I going to have to bribe you?’ He questioned. I looked to him and rolled my eyes.

‘Fine, if you come eat your dinner, we will have ice-cream cake for dessert. Okay?’ He said. I nodded my head and put my hand out in front of me. He laughed as he helped me up.

I waddled into the kitchen from the lounge and all those in the kitchen laughed at me as I tried to sit down. My bump has gotten so much bigger in nearly three months. The baby has been kicking a lot more and moving more and as weird it feels, it’s nice to know that she is still there.

‘It is very hard to sit down okay, stop laughing.’ I said as I finally sat down.

A plate of normal food was placed in front of me by Jaime who looked down to me with a cheeky smile.

‘Jaime, no.’ I said as I looked at the plate.

‘Remember what I said Stella.’ Dad warned. I started eating the plate of food and ate most of it except my peas. Even before I was pregnant I was not going to eat peas.

I stood up and went to the freezer grabbing the ice-cream cake out before I felt an uncomfortable sensation from below. I looked down and saw water dripping to the floor from my pants. I dropped the cake and turned around to see Jaime, dad and Hannah looking at me.

‘Um, guys…’ I said as I slightly started to freak out.

‘Okay, Jaime, go get her bag, Oli can you go start the car. We are going to get you to hospital now, okay Stel. It’ll be okay.’ Hannah said calmly.

Jaime dropped the plates in the sink and run out the room, dad ran to the garage, opening the door before slamming it shut again. Hannah was slowly walking me to that door when she groaned.

‘Excuse me Stella…. Oliver!!!!’ She yelled as we were still walking.

‘Oh, I’m sorry!’ Dad said as he was opening the door again. Hannah and dad helped me into the car as Jaime came jumping through the door.

I was sitting the car waiting for everyone else to get sorted before I felt a pain. I screamed and everyone looked at me.

‘Contractions. We need to go now just in case she is has a fast labour.’ Hannah said as she jumped in the back with me. Dad jumped into the driver’s seat and started driving. Jaime ran out the house and started running after the car. Dad stopped the car and Jaime jumped in the front.

‘Oli, you need to calm down. You’ll make Stella stressed.’ Hannah said from the back.

‘I’m sorry, my baby is having a baby and I am a little freaked out right now.’ He replied as he drove down the roads.

‘Don’t speed Oli.’ Hannah said.

‘I’m not! I am doing the speed limit.’ He replied.

I screamed again as they were bickering between themselves. The pain being too much to bare with. Jaime looked back at me, trying his best to show that he wasn’t worried with a slight smile. His hand reached back to me and grabbed onto my free hand that Hannah wasn’t holding onto.

His touch made me feel so much better about everything. Hannah had me breathing slowly and deeply, everything was okay until I got another contraction. By that time we had arrived at the hospital, my contractions were getting closer.

We walked into the hospital and we walked to the counter, we were lucky that Doctor Giles was waiting for the elevator.

‘Dad, Doctor Giles’ I said, pointing the elevator. Dad turned and saw her as well. He ran over to her and I could see movements and head turns before they both walked over.

‘Well, Stella, I guess it is time to get this baby out.’ She said before she called over a wheelchair and we walked to a room where we were in private and away from most people.

‘Okay, so Stella, this is the hardest part of procedure. You need to only pick on person to say in here with you.’ Doctor Giles said to me.

‘Hannah, please.’ I replied quickly.

‘Are you sure honey?’ She asked.

‘Yes, you are like a mother to me. You are my mum.’ I replied. Jaime and dad nodded and walked out the room.

The contractions were becoming more and more closer so I was given some pain relief for it.
‘Okay Stella, are you ready. I need you to push slowly, right now.’ Giles said. I looked at Hannah who grabbed my hand and squeezed it. I slowly pushed and I was still feeling some pain.

‘Alright now Stella, here is the biggest part, I need you to push really hard for me now. Ready, push! Push!’ Doctor said. I pushed as hard as I could, that hard that all the sound around me was blocked out. My eyes were scrunched up before a suddenly felt relaxed.

I heard a cry and I slowly opened my eyes up and looked to the baby which Doctor Giles was holding.

‘You have a healthy baby girl. Congratulations Stella. You did such a good job.’ I smiled as she handed me my little bundle of joy. She surprisingly stopped crying and was sleeping soundly in my arms.

Hannah was looking at me with awe and she had tears in her eyes.

‘Wanna hold her?’ I asked. Hannah looked a little taken back before she accepted the offer. I handed her my sleeping little girl and looked as Hannah admired her little grandchild.

‘I think I have a name. I really like the name Ruby.’ I said. Hannah looked behind her when the door clicked.

‘Ruby is such a gorgeous name Stella.’ Jaime said as he walked over to me. He handed me a bunch of flowers with a card and a little giraffe teddy.

‘Thank you Jaime. I love you.’ I replied.

‘I love you too.’ He replied before kissing me.

‘Sarah and Vic are on their way now okay.’ Jaime mentioned after our kiss. I nodded my head and looked to the door.

‘Your dad is informing your mother.’ Jaime mentioned.

‘Jaime, here.’ Hannah said as she walked over to me.

Jaime grabbed hold of the baby and looked at her. He had tears in his eyes.

‘She is so beautiful. So much like you. She has your eyes.’ He replied.

‘Which are like dad’s eyes.’ I replied.

‘She has my eyes?’ I heard from the door. Dad walked in and Jaime walked towards him, handing him Ruby.

‘Dad meet Ruby.’ I replied.

‘Hi Ruby.’ He said to this granddaughter while tears streamed down his face.

The whole included introducing everyone to the new member to our little family. I skyped mum later that night so she could meet Ruby. I was so tired and eventually fell asleep while everyone was still glooming over her.
