The pact

Boulevard of broken dreams

The rest of the day I couldn't stop thinking about the story that Jessie told me. Luckily I didn't have to come in front of class anymore, because I wasn't able to concentrate on anything because of it.
Victor was in my French class but he went to sit at the other side of the classroom and I was happy he did. I wish I had never found out about the story because now I couldn't stop noticing people pretending he didn't exist and for some reason it kind of broke my heart. And that was weird, because Victor wasn't the victim of the story. I should've hated him, despise him for punching a guy into the hospital. But I didn't, maybe a little, but not as the others did, not as I should have.
I just couldn't stop thinking about how lonely he must be. To be completely isolated by everyone around you, like you're a ghost, you're literally nothing to them.
I shook my head, I didn't want to think about it anymore. I looked around. Ugh, of course I was lost. I had no idea how I was going to walk home. I should've taken the bus, but to be honest, I didn't even know where to exit the bus.
I walked over to a stone bench and sat on it. The surface was hot, but so was everything here. My pale, English skin couldn't take the hot San Diego sun. I was completely sure that I was going to have a sun burn when I got home.
I put my elbows on my knees and my face in my hands. This day has been so weird. Not necessarily bad, but just weird and I didn't know how to process it.
''Can I help you?'' I heard someone say. It took a few seconds for me to realise the stranger was talking to me.
I looked up. It was one of the boys from the Mike and co. group. I think Jessie told me that his name was Jaime. I knew he was a freshman but he certainly didn't look like one, he even looked older than me. He wore a black shirt with a scull on it, but to my surprise he had a friendly, caring smile. My mother always told me to stay away from people like him, but as I was looking at him I realised she was wrong. This kid genuinely seemed to care.
''Well no, I mean yes, I mean I don't know.'' I sighed.
He laughed. ''Are you lost?''
''Yeah, actually I am." I said. "I'm new in this city, and well let's be honest in this country and I have no idea how to get home.'' ''I was born in this city. I pretty much know every street. Where do you live?''
''I think it was church street?'' I told him. Why was I so bad at remembering this kind of stuff?
''Okay I'll walk you home'' he smiled at me.
As I stood up he said: ''I'm Jaime by the way''
I smiled back at him. ''I'm Luna''
We started walking. ''so...You must be the girl who said in front of the whole class that she would pour tea over Ryan's head.'' he grinned
''Yes, unfortunately I am.'' I said "am I known for that at school now?''
He shrugged. ''Well, you're mostly known as the British chick, but I heard the story from my friend Tony and honestly it's a brilliant move. Ryan probably didn't expect it all''
Of course the whole school knew about it. But for some reason Jaime made me feel like it wasn't that bad.
''Well, Thanks'' I laughed. ''I think Tony is the guy that stood up and started clapping''
He busted out in laughter. ''yeah he told me that. God, I wish I was as good in English as Tony, I would've been able to follow junior year English and then I would've been able to see it.''
''Oh god, I'm glad you aren't. It's embarrassing enough already.'' I said.
Jaime and I kept talking all the way to my home, which was pretty far. I turned out to be at the other end of the city. Yeah, I know, pretty smart huh?
I really liked Jaime though. He was very friendly, funny and a little dorky. He did most of the talking, which was a good thing, because I can be very shy with people I had just met.
I finally felt like I've made a real friend. Not a fake one like Jessie, she probably was just gonna use me for her own good anyway.
Eventually, my house came into view. I thanked Jaime for walking me home and I walked inside.
I noticed my parents were still at work, so I immediately went to my room. It was bigger than my last room, but I didn't really care about that. It meant that there was more space to fill up, and I had no idea with what. I didn't really have my own style, my mom decorated my last room. I think I was a little scared of liking things, because my mom always dislikes them. For some reason she thinks modern things make me want to do drugs or something, I don't know. I almost never listen to music, except if it's classical. I almost never watch movies, except if my mom approves them and so on. That's probably why I don't really know who I am and what I like. Of course I had watched an occasional movie or listened to pop music with my old friends, but what did it matter to like something if my mom kept a constant eye on me?
I put down my backpack and looked around my room. The least I could do was put all my clothes in the closet and my books at my desk. At least I got rid of all those boxes if I did.
My mom came into my room when I was halfway putting my clothes in my closet. ''How was school darling?''
''It was alright.'' I said ''I guess I already made friends.'' I folded a hideous dress my mom bought me.
''Make sure they are the right kind of people, darling. I don't want you hanging out with punks or gothic's or those hip-hop kids.''
This was typically my mom, she didn't tell me that she was happy I found friends again. She just cut right to the part where she judges everyone on their clothing style and taste of music. She always finds something wrong with people.
''Yeah, mom, You know I always will. They're perfectly normal and neat.'' I thought about Jaime and realised how much of a lie that was. My mom would probably get a heart attack if I brought someone like him home.
''Okay, that's great, darling, I can't wait to meet them.'' she said and she walked out of my room.
I sighed. Sometimes I wish I was born in a different family.

The next day my first class was science. Just before I walked through the door I suddenly thought about the fact that I probably needed a lab partner. I walked in the classroom and I hoped to see Jessie, at least I would've had someone to sit with, but she wasn't in my class.
But Victor was...and he was the only one still sitting alone...
My heart started to race, the teacher was definitely going to put me next to him and after all I heard about them, I just couldn't look at him normally. Not that I ever did...
The teacher walked up to me. 'You must be Luna Fall, the new student. I'm Mr. Johnson, you're science teacher.'' He sounded and looked like someone really boring.
I nodded. ''Nice to meet you sir.''
''Why don't you go sit next to Victor? He'll be your lab partner for this year.''
I wanted to run out of the classroom but instead I slowly walked towards the table in front of class and sat next to Victor. He didn't look my way and didn't say anything. I was happy for that, I didn't think I could've ignored him. I knew what he did was terrible, but somehow I still felt bad for him. That was probably the reason I didn't want to sit next to him.
Mr. Johnson started teaching, but I didn't really pay attention. I was just trying to figure out what I had to do when we had to do projects together, I can't not talk to him if I want to get a good grade.
Victor didn't move at all during the talk of Mr. Johnson. He just sat there, looking at the school board with a numb look in his eyes. I wondered what was going on in his mind.
''Okay everyone, now it's time to start with the first project.'' Oh. my. god. ''Look at page forty-five for the instructions. Good luck everyone.''
Me and Victor sat there for a moment in silence while everyone was talking about the instructions. My heart went really fast and I became more nervous the longer the silence between us was.
After a little while Victor turned his a little to me, but he still didn't look at me. ''I don't want to get you in trouble.'' he said really soft. ''So don't respond to me, okay? Blink twice if you understand.''
My heart started going even faster. Though I couldn't help to but think how selfless it was of him to not wanting to get me in trouble. I blinked twice.
''Okay, that's great. Uhm...'' He seemed to think about what to say. ''I'm not that great at science, actually I'm horrible at it. I'm actually just not doing well at school at all...But that's not the point I wanted to make. Uhm... what if you did the project and I'll imitate you? And I say it when I think you should do something different. Not that I want to let you do all the work, I just think I'll mess things up if I do a lot. Raise your eyebrows if you agree''
I noticed that he sounded almost enthusiastic that he had some human interaction. He obviously was afraid to insult me.
I was actually pretty good at science. I could help him, explain it to him, I thought.
I raised my eyebrows and took out my textbook. The rest of the lesson Victor copied my actions and we actually succeeded.
He smiled. He had a nice smile, a warm smile. ''This is the first time I actually succeeded at a science project.'' his smile disappeared. ''not that you care...not that you should.''
I sighed and put my face in my hands. ''This is bullshit.'' I said, it was out before I could think about it. I just couldn't take it anymore.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Victors eyes go wide. ''Did you just...I mean, what is bullshit? The project?''
I took my face out of my hands and closed my eyes. ''No, this not-talking-to-you rule.'' I said almost not moving my lips.
''I don't know how much you know about it, but it makes more sense than you think.'' he said. I couldn't read the emotion in his voice.
''I know enough to know that it's fucking bullshit.'' I said as soft as I could.
''Whatever you think of it, you should take it seriously. Ryan doesn't go easy on people who break the pact. He ruins more than their reputation if you know what I mean.''
The rest of the lesson I stayed quiet, but more because Victor wanted me to. Maybe also a little bit because his last statement made me kind of scared. I wondered what happened to people who broke the rule, people like me.
