The pact

Iris

The next day I walked through the halls of my new school. I was wearing one of the sweaters my mom bought for me, it was light pink and had pearls around the collar. I didn't really like it, but I didn't really have my own clothing style, so I just wore the clothes my mom bought for me. It worked out for me before, back in England we wore uniforms to school so I didn't really have to think about it.
I looked around and saw how different this school was from my old school. Not only did everyone have their own clothing on, but the halls were also a complete chaos. People shouted at each other, some of them laughed and someone threw a basketball to someone else. If the teachers of my old school were here... well they probably lit themselves on fire out of frustration.
I giggled at the thought of Mrs. Hall, my least favourite teacher, light herself on fire.
I was so consumed in my thoughts that I didn't see that someone was walking in front of me and bumped into someone. My forms that contained my locker combination, schedule and booklist fell out of my hands and on the floor.
“hey! Look out!” I said.
I looked in front of me and saw a skinny kid with long brown hair kneel down to get my papers. “I-I'm s-sorry” he stuttered. He stood up and handed me my forms. His eyes met mine and I saw that he had big dark eyes, almost black.
“It's okay.” I said not looking away. “it doesn't matter” He was a small, but he still was a little taller than me.
For a moment I thought he was going to smile, but then he looked away like he remembered something and he walked away before I had the chance to introduce myself.
I heard a weird feeling about this boy, like something was up with him. I've always had a pretty good intuition and it was telling me now that something was not alright with him. I couldn't tell if he was bad himself, or if he had been through bad things. It confused me.

The rest of the morning went by in a blur. I didn't have any classes with the long haired boy, so I couldn't observe him to find out what wasn't right about him.
My first class that day was English. I really hoped the teacher didn't notice me so I wouldn't have to get up and introduce myself. Actually, I hoped this day went by without anyone noticing me.
Of course my wish didn't come true. “oh, it looks like we have a new student!” my English teacher, Mr. Brown, said as I sat as low in my chair as I could to not be noticed. Not that it mattered, the whole class was looking at me.
“Come in front of class and introduce yourself” Mr. Brown said smiling. Ugh, I was dying inside. “C'mon, don't be shy” he said when I wasn't getting up.
I slowly got up and walked in front of class, I heard silent laughter behind me.
“Uhm, my name is Luna Fall, I'm sixteen years old and I moved here from Bristol since yesterday.” I said as fast and soft as I could.
“Would you like a cup of tea, dear?” a boy shouted in a fake British accent. It was a tall guy, with blonde hair. He looked way older than the other people in this class. His friends were patting him on the back and next to him a girl laughed a little too loud at his joke.
First I felt insulted, but then I thought about what Casey said on the phone about tea jokes and I let out a chuckle.
The blonde boy looked surprised. “What's so funny, babe?”
I didn't think about what I was going to say, I just did it. And no, I didn't believe it myself either: “I was just thinking about accepting that cup of tea that you offered. Make it extra hot, so I can through it all over you. Don't worry about burning wounds, you face can't get any worse than this anyway.”
For a few seconds the whole classroom was quiet. So quiet, you could hear everyone breath. The person that broke the silence was a small boy with a snapback in the front of class, he just stood up and started clapping. Within the next seconds a few other people stood up and joined in, including the girl that laughed really loud at the blond boy.
I put my hand in front of my mouth as a few people started cheering.
“Okay, Okay that's enough” Mr. Brown said, desperately trying to get everyone quiet. “Okay, OKAY QUIET EVERYONE.” The talking slowly faded away until it was quiet again.
“Okay, Luna, you can sit down again” he said while he was taking his glasses of his big nose and started cleaning them with shirt.
I walked back to my seat and sat down. The rest of the lesson, I felt like I was being watched.
I knew who it was I just didn't dare to look his way.
At the end of the lesson I did anyway. The blonde boy was staring intensely at me. And not in a good way. In a 'you're dead. I'm going to kill you' way.
I quickly looked the other way again. Wow, great, Luna. You made enemies in the first lesson of your first day at your new school. Way to go.

“Hey there! My name is Jessie! I thought you were awesome in class!” I looked up from my food to see the girl that laughed hysterically in my English class. I wasn't really sure why she was talking to me. She basically made fun of me in front of the whole class. Well, actually she didn't, but she laughed at it and that's practically the same.
“uhm, thanks I guess” I said a bit confused.
“Can I sit here?” she asked mentioning to the empty table I was sitting at.
“sure” I said scratching my head.
“You really got Ryan good, though.” she said smiling really wide. “It was literally so funny”
“Thank you” I said while observing her from the corner of my eyes. She had platinum blonde hair and blue eyes. She was dressed really stylish, like those girls you see on fashion shows on TV.
“Look, What happened in class made me think and I want to help you.” she said folding her hands together.
I didn't say anything.
“You obviously made a great first in English class today, but...”
Wait what? Did she think it was a great first impression? More like a horrible one.
“But, this is not some private school in Britain. The first thing you wanna know about this school is that everything here is about reputation. If you hang around with the popular kids you're school time is gonna be awesome, if not, it's gonna be hell.”
Oh my god. How did I end up in mean girls?
I remained silence and tried to find the only eatable things that were on my plate as she was talking.
“You're pretty and you made a great first impression, wouldn't it be a shame if you didn't end up at the good side? Well I can help you. I can give you tips, tell you who everyone is, tell you which clubs to join...maybe give you a little fashion advice...What do you think?”
I thought for a moment. I didn't like her, that was for sure. But I really needed some friends here and maybe I could meet other people through her. Sitting alone was going to get depressing at some point...
“Yeah okay that's alright” I said and I nodded.
“Great!” she said and she clapped her manicured hands. “First tip, don't eat cafeteria food. It's gross and there are probably diseases in it.”
I laughed. She was right, I kind of figured that out myself, though. I pushed away my plate and dropped my fork.
“So, I think I'm just gonna start by telling you what groups we have at this school.”
She told me the names for all the lunch groups they had. There were punks and nerds and stoners and honestly the clichéness of this was awful. How did I end up at the one school in America that exactly fitted the American high school stereotype?
According to Jessie the group she hung out with was considered the 'cool' group and she pointed to every single person in the group and told me their names.
“Well of course you've met Ryan...” she said pointing at the blonde boy. “He can be an ass sometimes, but he is really cool if you get to know him. Just don't insult him anymore, the first time was cool, the second time he will socially END you.”
I swallowed. That guy was freaking me out.
Jessie kept pointing at people. “And that's Miranda, and Isabel ohhh and that's Peter. He is so hot and single, maybe you can make a move.” she said and she winked at me.
I smiled at her but didn't tell her that the thought of having a relationship made me sick to the stomach. I was kind of afraid of commitment.
I looked at the other side of the cafeteria where a group of weird looking boys were standing. They all wore black and they were talking really loud. I noticed that the boy with the snapback, the one who started clapping, was standing with him. “Who are they?” I asked Jessie.
She looked at the odd group of boys and pulled her eyebrow up. “We don't really have a name for them yet. They are all freshmen and they were really popular in middle school, I have really no idea why, because they are into emo shit and stuff... But for now we call them Mike Fuentes and co.”
I saw that one boys of the group was obviously the leader, as he was telling all the jokes and the others were laughing. He had wavy brown her until his shoulders and he had a handsome face. He also had a tattoo on his arm...but wait...he was a freshman! How could he be having a tattoo? He was like 14!
“I guess the boy with the tattoo is Mike.” it was more of an assumption than a question.
“Yeah, and the boy with the short black here and the scull on his shirt is Jaime. Oh and the guy with the snapback is Tony. They are the most important of the group. The rest are kinda irrelevant.”
I didn't have much time to focus at the group of boys, as the longhaired boy from this morning walked into the cafeteria. I was interested in which group he belonged so I focused on him as he walked to the other side of the cafeteria and sat on the floor in a corner. Alone.
“Who is he?” I asked not taking my eyes of him.
Jessie followed the direction I looked, let out a screech and made me turn my head to the table so I wouldn't be looking at him anymore. “Don't talk about him if you want to stay alive.”
I assumed she made a joke so I chuckled, but when I looked up at her, she looked serious.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
She got a little closer to me, like we were having a secret conversation and she didn't want anyone to know. “That is Victor Fuentes, he is Mike's older brother. The school kinda made a pact about him...” She stared at the table lost in thought.
“What kind of pact?” I pushed her.
“Look a few years ago when Victor was still in middle school, Ryan was a few classes above him. One day Victor started punching him...not many people were there so nobody knows exactly what happened, but...” She paused “Ryan got into the hospital and he was there for three months! He's deaf on one ear now, but honestly, I heard he could've been dead.”
“Wow” I just said and I glanced at Victor. He looked so innocent. Could a small, skinny boy like him really punch a tall boy like Ryan into the hospital? I found it hard to believe, but Jessie gave me no reason not to believe her. “But what does that have to do with a pact?” I asked.
“Well, Ryan is a pretty influential person at this school, you know.” she said. “He told everyone he knew that if they were to talk to Victor, that he would ruin their lives. That spread fast, within a few days everyone knew not to talk to him. Nobody really knows what happened to the people that did, most of them transferred schools.”
“So, everyone just acts like he doesn't exists? Isn't that a bit cruel?” I asked.
“Cruel? We're talking about a boy that punched a person into the hospital! He should rot in his own misery. I truly hope he feels alone.”
I kinda knew that he did. It was readable in his eyes.
Fuck, this was bad. I knew something was up with that boy, but I never thought it was something like this! And maybe...maybe I kind of hoped that Victor wasn't the bad guy, but the victim...I don't know why.
