Lava Lamp Kisses and Burnt Skin
Light My Skin On Fire
“Hey dickheads! I’m here!” Sam yelled. “And I brought somebody!” He added. He looked at me and smiled.
“We’re down here! And if it’s the pizza guy, I’m gonna fucking love you forever!” I heard coming from the basement. I sighed. Well, they’re about be disappointed.
“No, fucktard. It was a once in a lifetime thing okay?” He said. Oh yeah, did I tell you my brother was gay?
“Come on that was the best relationship that I think you’ve ever been in.” A guy saying appeared at the bottom of the steps. He was very much tan and had longish hair. He smiled at Sam and then looked behind him and gave a confusing glance.
“She’s my sister bro.” He nodded his head.
“Oh, okay cause I was about to be like.” He laughed. My brother shook his head.
“Nope, this is Taylor. She’s going to be here watching us rehearse for the gig this weekend.” My brother said. The guy smiled and held out his hand.
“I’m Mike, nice to meet your acquaintance.” He said. I took his hand and smiled.
“Nice to meet you too Mike.” I flashed him a smile. I swear I saw a flash of something in his eyes, but couldn’t tell what.
“Well, now that we’re past the awkward part, where’s the rest of the bands?” He asked. Mike shrugged.
“They said they were on the way. You know you’re always 10 minutes early.” Mike said walking back to the room where he came from. I followed close behind Sam, and when we got to the room, I stopped. The room was like something out of a recording studio. With what I was assuming was soundproof walls. There were cords everywhere and had three guitars on stands. A black drum set sat in the back and the lights were dim.
“Wow. This is actually quite impressive.” I said, looking around.
“I know right? It took forever to build but we did it. It’s so much better than going to an actual studio. We just get our sound guy and manager to come over and we do our thang.” Sam said coming up behind me. I smiled, and turned.
“So are you guys going to be working in there?” I asked.
“No, that’s only when we’re ready to record. We’re practicing over there.” Mike said pointing across the room. Same setup, except less nicer. “You can sit on the couch Taylor. If you want.” He said, smiling at me.
“Okay.” I said, sitting on the couch. He sat behind his drum set and did a couple of warmups. Vic, I’m assuming, grabbed a guitar and strummed a few chords. I got comfortable and waited for the ‘show’ to begin.
(1 hour later)
“So what if I can’t forget you? I’ll burn your name into my throat, I’ll be the fire that’ll catch you.” Vic sang into the mic. I smiled. They’re actually really good. I watched them all, but Mike was just, I couldn’t stop myself from starring at him when I looked at him. He stuck his tongue out when he concentrated. It was actually really cute.
“So, what do you think?” Sam said beside me. His band showed up just as Mike’s band had finished warming up. And I had the fortunate pleasure of being stuck between Casper and Sam.
“They’re really good!” I sorta yelled.
“Yeah, that’s why they were invited to go to Warp this summer! Their manager told them that they had the opportunity and they jumped at it.” Sam said. I got a little sad, I’m not gonna lie. He’s leaving. And I’m stuck here.
“That’s awesome!” I said. They had finished their song, and we clapped.
“That’s sounding better and better every time guys!” Sam said. Mike smiled and got up from behind his wall of drums.
“Thanks man! Are ya’ll ready to go?” Vic asked Sam.
“Yeah, we’re playing the set for the tour.” Casper said. Tour? I gave Sam a questioning look.
“We’re opening up for Peirce the Veil.” Sam said. My heart dropped. He’s leaving me here with her? Was he even going to tell me? Mike sat down beside me, and gave me a soft look.
“Are you okay?” He asked. I faked a smile.
“Yeah, I’m fine. You guys were awesome!” I said. They warmed up and started playing. One of my favorite songs of them were ‘Light My Skin on Fire,’ it had meaning and the music was perfect. I closed my eyes, and swayed my head to the beat. I kept feeling eyes on me, but didn’t think anything of it. After about 45 minutes, they were done.
“That was great!” I said. I tried to sound positive. But it was hard.
“Thanks sis!” Sam said. “I have a question for you though.” Oh God, what?”
“Yes?” I asked.
“So I talked it over with the guys, and we want you to come on tour with us as both our merch girl!” Sam said. My heart sped up.
“You want me to come on tour with you guys?” I asked, smiling. Mike wrapped his arm around my shoulder.
“Why not? I think you’d be pretty great at it!” Mike smiled. I blushed. Curse me for being a girl with feelings.
“Yeah, I’ll do it!” I said.
“Great! Now we just have to tell mom!” Sam said. Fuck.
