The Last Punch
Burning Eyes and Cigarettes
“I like that one..” Mel said looking into the glass case. We had made our way into a jewelry store somehow and now we were looking at engagement rings. Even though neither of us were engaged we still loved looking. The ring she was looking at was a traditional inlay and style, except the metal was silvery and not gold. Mel wanted to marry Alex so badly but he had not asked and Mel thought it would never happen. I looked into the case and saw one that jumped out at me. It was a black finish with 11 diamonds. I took a picture of it and looked at Mel.
“I love this one…” I smiled and she looked at it.
“It’s so perfect for you!” She smiled then sighed in anguish. “Too bad neither of us are engaged..” She sighed and we headed out of the store and back into the mall.
“Where to now?” I asked swinging my purse around. She laughed and perked up when she saw a tall guy with huge stretched ears and straightened platinum blond hair.
"Freddie!!!" She said giddily running towards him. She jumped into his arm and he picked her up.
"Mel!!" he kissed her cheek and smiled. As he put her down he smiled larger. "I haven't seen you in years... Where have you been? Ive asked around for you and no one would tell me." He said looking at me up and down.
"The states. I've been modelling with this lady. I live in California." He nodded and looked at me.
"I thought you looked familiar. I've seen you in tattoo magazines. But I've never seen Mel in any Magazines over here. I'm Freddie!" he held put his hand and I gave him a firm shake. He blushed and looked at the both of us.
"Al this is one of my best friends from childhood! I haven't seen him since I moved to the US." she stopped and smiled.
"Is it just your mom still?" He asked, Mel looked down then looked back up. "My mom took my dad back. And now they live in our childhood house again."
"That's good!" He smiled.
"So what were you doi-" Mel was interrupted by a loudmouth ginger.
"Hey babe who you talkin- MELODY HARTLEY???" The girl said coming over to Freddie and hanging on his arm. Mel rolled her eyes and shook her head.
"Really? Really Freddie?... Mindy? Freddie, you knew what she did to me... And you sti-- We're leaving." Mel took my hand and we continued walking, past them and to furniture store. We walked into a room and Mel sat on the couch.
"Mel what was that?" A sob escaped her lips followed by a few tears.
"Mindy. Mindy Pattings. She had her friends slam my head into a wall and she stole my boyfriend from me and made me sound like a slut." She shook her head and I sighed.
"So why the fuck has Freddie gotten with her?!" I must've said that loudly, a worker almost snapped his neck to look at us. Mel shrugged and sighed. We quickly headed for outside the mall. Not more than 3 minutes later we were smoking on the steps.
"I just want to go home Al... My real home. With my two Alex's and my job." She blew out smoke and I nodded.
"Okay, let's go." I said, holding out my hand. She took it and we walked down the street. As we headed I looked to Mel and the whites of her eyes had turned pink, you could tell she had been crying.
"I want Alex to propose so badly.. I love him so much." When Mel got sad she would always talk about how much she loved Alex or me. I knew she must've been really said when she mentioned how Alex and her want to have kids.
