Love Like a Tidal Wave.
We Talked About All the Pretty Things, and All the Shitty Things.
“Everything is going to be alright babe. I promise you'll be fine. They'll figure out what's wrong and send us right home. I love you Maggie. It hurts me to see you this nervous. Please try to calm down” He sighed.
“I know, I just really hate doctor's offices” She began tapping her leg again. A nurse appeared at the door, holding a clipboard.
“Magdalynn?” She called, looking down at her chart. Vic and Magdalynn both stood up and headed towards her. They started with her weight and height, then took her back to a little room before measuring her blood pressure and heart-rate.
“So what are we seeing you for today?” She asked, a pen in her hand.
“I have severe breast tenderness, fatigue, and I'm really hormonal. I think I just need to get on a new birth control” she said, looking at her feet.
“Alright, I'm just going to take you over to the restroom, and have you urinate in a cup so we can check your hormone levels. After that the doctor will be right in” Magdalynn stood up, leaving Vic in the room before following the nurse down the hall. She did her business, washed her hands, and headed back to the examination room.
“Are you alright Mags?” Vic asked, leaning forward in the chair.
“Yeah, I'm doing a little better. That nurse was really nice, and she calmed me down” She smiled.
“Good, I'm so glad” Vic smiled back. The door opened and an older man walked in, wearing a white lab coat.
“Hello Miss Magdalynn, how are you doing today?” He asked, shaking her hand.
“I'm doing well, thank you” She shook his hand and smiled at him.
“And who might this be?” He indicated to Vic, leaning over to shake his hand as well.
“This is my boyfriend, Victor”
“Thank you for seeing Maggie on such short notice, Sir” Vic said. The doctor smiled and nodded at him.
“Alright, so I have a few questions for you. You said that you have breast tenderness. Do you keep up with your home breast exams?” He asked, looking down at his chart.
“I don't” She said guiltily. “I really know that I should, but especially with how much they've been hurting lately, it's hard for me to want to” He nodded at her and walked to the cabinet, pulling out a paper gown.
“I need you to put this on. I'm going to conduct a quick breast exam just to make sure that everything is alright” She quickly put on the gown, only removing her top and bra. The doctor gestured to her to lay down flat on her back. He began the exam, trying to be gentle, even though she was practically squirming from pain. Vic held her hand as she squeezed, trying to distract herself from the pain. The doctor suddenly stopped on one spot, feeling it over again. She let out a sharp squeak, and a tear rolled down her face.
“I'm feeling an odd lump right here. I'm not really sure what it is, but I'm going to send you for an MRI so that we can take a look at it” Magdalynn's stomach dropped. She felt dizzy, and like she was going to puke. Vic's eyes had widened, and he was looking at her chest. She knew he was looking to see if there were any visible differences in them, but there weren't. “Do you have any history of breast cancer in your family?” He asked, looking through her chart.
“Yes, my g-g-grandma died of it th-th-three years ago” she was whispering, tears were spilling out of her eyes and she was shaking.
“I'm not extremely worried, it's very uncommon for girls your age to get breast cancer. Just go for the MRI this evening, and try to relax. I'll examine it the second that it comes in and call you when I get the results back. At that time we'll also have your hormone panel back, so we can analyze it” He said. He put a hand behind her back and helped her sit up.
“I'm going to leave the room to get changed. You can pick up a list of places you can have your MRI at the receptionist's desk” He left the room, closing the door quietly behind him. Magdalynn stood but almost immediately collapsed into Vic's arms. He squeezed her tight, rubbing her back, kissing her hair, and making 'shhh' noises.
“Baby, you heard the doctor. He's not too worried. C'mon, let's go get you checked out and we'll head over to get your MRI. It's going to be ok” Vic was trying to comfort her, but inside he was worried sick. Magdalynn finally gathered her strength and pulled on her clothes. She leaned on Vic for support, walking out towards the front desk. When she arrived there, they had a list waiting. The receptionist gave her a sympathetic smile and handed her the paper. Magdalynn smiled back, and they headed out towards Vic's car. He located the nearest place to have the MRI conducted and drove there. The car ride was almost silent. Vic could tell she was scared and stressed. He put a mental note in his head to do something nice for her later. They arrived at the office and Magdalynn took a deep breath. She wasn't ready to do this, but she knew she had to. Vic grabbed her hand.
“I love you sweetheart. Everything will be fine” He squeezed her hand and looked into her eyes.
