Can't Imagine

02.

Lucy sat in class drawing doodles in her notebook. She wasn't in any sense an artist, but her simple drawings helped pass the time. The rest of her class amused themselves by talking amongst each other. There was only fifteen minutes before school would be let out and the teacher had given up on her lecture early. Her classmates were talking excitedly about prom and graduation.

Neither of those things excited Lucy. She would probably be sitting at home alone while prom went on. She didn't talk to very many people and consequently didn’t have very many friends. The two people she considered her friends were acquaintances at best. And both of them were going to prom with their significant others already, anyway.

Graduation wasn’t going to be much better for her. Once her senior year hit, she came to the realization that almost everyone in the school had no idea who she was. That meant she was going to be that girl. The one who walks across the stage and gets a golf clap while the person in front of and behind her has people yelling and screaming their names.

Senior year really sucked for Lucy.

Lucy was thrown out of her thoughts when the door to her room was unexpectedly opened by a policewoman. The class grew a little quieter as she walked up to Lucy’s teacher. They talked in hushed voices for a moment before they motioned for Lucy to come up to the desk. Lucy’s face turned bright red as everyone’s eyes grew wide and looked at her.

Lucy was almost positive she had done nothing wrong, but she approached the teacher’s desk like she was in trouble anyway. The police woman gave her a reassuring smile and asked her if she had seen a fight yesterday when she stayed afterschool. Lucy breathed a huge sigh of relief and then metaphorically kicked herself for thinking she might have been in trouble. It just wasn’t every day she was called to talk to a cop.

Lucy could hear her classmate’s conversations start to get louder again as they lost interest in the situation. It was nothing interesting, just something about a fight. Fights happen all the time in her school.

“I saw some kid get thrown against a wall yesterday. That was it. The kid ran off after that.” Lucy told the officer.

“Well that’s not the story I was told. Would you mind coming to my office so we can make a statement?” she replied.

“Uh, okay.” Lucy said half-heartedly.

The policewoman told her to grab her stuff and asked her if it would be okay if she was a little late getting out of the school today. Lucy shrugged her shoulders. She didn’t have anything to do anyway. At least this made for an interesting story to tell her mom when she got off work tonight.

When they arrived at her office there was a boy sitting in a chair looking very unpleasant. “Well it looks like this girl is saving your butt this time, Mr. Fuentes.” The policewoman told the boy. The boy’s face looked from her to Lucy and his features lightened a little bit.

“What do you mean?” he asked, giving Lucy a very strange look.

“She’s a witness that can say Mr. Roberts is lying. Although, slamming him up against the wall still isn’t the nicest thing to do, I think you’re going to get away with it this time.” She answered.

The boy silently nodded his head and sat there while the policewoman made Lucy write out what happened yesterday afterschool so she could have documentation. Once they were done officer smiled at her and told them they were free to go.

Lucy gave both of them an awkward goodbye and started heading out of the door. A few seconds later she could hear footsteps behind her.

“Who the hell are you, anyway?” the boy asked. Lucy quickly picked up on the fact he had terrible manners.

“I’m Lucy.” she stated to him. They continued walking side-by-side in silence. She couldn’t tell if it was an awkward silence or if he was just deep in thought. Soon the silence was broken when he abruptly asked if he could use her phone.

“Sure.” She replied, stopping so she could dig in her backpack to pull her cell phone out. The boy quickly typed in a number and waited for it to ring. After a little while he pulled the phone from his ear with a grimace and handed the phone back. “What’s wrong?” Lucy asked.

“Nothing, don’t worry about it.” He responded.

Lucy wasn’t one to pry, so she shrugged it off and continued to her car. The boy walked with her a little while longer. When they reached the parking lot the boy split off in the opposite direction as her and Lucy felt relieved. Once she reached her car she could feel her phone buzzing from inside her backpack. She didn’t know the number and figured it was whoever the boy had just called. Out of curiosity she answered it.

“Hello?” she asked.

“Woah, who is this?” a male voice spoke from the other line.

“Lucy, who is this?” she asked.

“My name is Vic. Why did you call me?”

“Oh, that wasn’t me, it was some guy who asked to use my phone. Oddly enough, I only know his last name is Fuentes.” she responded.

“Ah. That was just my brother.” He said. Lucy could hear someone talking to him in the background. Once the voice stopped the man started talking again, “Hey, I’ve gotta go. But if you ever wanna call me, feel free.” He stated in a flirtatious tone and quickly hung up. Lucy couldn’t help but smile. Today was a very weird day for her. Her mom was gonna love this.
