You Hold Me Down With Your Eyes

Carmel. Her name matched her eyes. Light, yet rich and full of life, and reminded me of the texture and colour of caramel. Her eyes had always held me captive, securing my wrists and locking my heart in a box, only to be unlocked with a whisper of a kiss.

She was doing this now, with a smile on her lips, yet the happiness shown didn't reach her crystal orbs. Her eyes were, in this instance, dull. She looked at the screen next to her, picking up a plastic bag and passing it to me. 'That'll be four ninety-five.'

I hastily grabbed my wallet and paid Carmel, smiling in return. 'Here you go.'

'Have a nice day,' she said, before turning to the next person, 'hello, how's your day going?' I moved on and out of the small aisle allocated to that register. I bit my lip softly and walked over to the coffee shop. Carmel's shift ended in a few minutes.

'Hello,' yet another girl was at the counter, a fooling smile on her face that didn't reveal her true emotions. I ordered to black coffees, and grabbed a few of those sugar packets you find on the counter and a spoon. I looked out the front window and saw Carmel leave her register, and pale hand reaching up and wiping her hair off her face. 'Here you go,' the waitress said, handing me the finished coffees.

'Thanks.' I walked back out and sat at a bench, my foot resting on my leg - the closest I could get to crossing my legs.

I had met Carmel almost two months ago. She had captured my heart from the first word that had slipped her lips - hello. I was now ready to take our interaction a step further. I saw her out of the corner of my eye, and I walked over, the coffees in my hands and the plastic bag dangling from the crook of my arm.

'Carmel,' I said, reaching her. She looked startled, her eyes wide open. Her hair, usually worn in a bun while she was working was now loose, revealing it to be beautiful shades of brown.

'Do I know you?' She said tentatively, skittering to the side.

'I'm sorry, I'm Mike.' She continued to look at me warily. 'You served me earlier today at Walmart.' Recognition washed over her mistrustful eyes.

'Oh yes, well, I'm Carmel. It's been very nice to formally meet you.' She said. She had stopped walking, but still seemed terrified.

'Here,' I said, handing her her coffee and a few of the sugar packets. 'I'll just go now.' I could see the discomfort I was causing her, it would be best for me just to leave. My heart deflated a little bit as I walked away from her.

'Wait!' She called, and I turned, seeing her bite her lip. 'It would be rude of me not to accept your offer of coffee. Do you want to sit down somewhere?' I walked back, saying,

'Wherever you want to.'
