Queen For A Day

I faded in and out of consciousness for a while, and I could feel somebody in the room with me but I couldn’t open my eyes.
“You’ll be ok Cali, everything’s fine now. Just stay asleep. It’ll make everything easier.” I couldn’t recognise the voice, but I smiled lightly in response and let myself drift off again.

There was no point where I remember awakening, it was more of a gradual thing that happened over a few hours. I simply just regained the energy to move a bit, then after a while I managed to open my eyes. I looked to my left to see a form curled up in a plastic chair beside my bed. His hand was wrapped around mine gently and his breathing was slow and even. I shifted my head a bit to figure out who it was. Vic? I caught sight of his long hair and nose ring glinting in the soft light coming from the hallway. My movement must’ve awoken him because he started to stir and he slowly opened his eyes. As soon as he realised I was looking at him he jumped up and stood above me.
“Hello beautiful.” He looked so excited, “I see you’ve opened your eyes now.”
“Yeah,” I croaked out. Ouch my throat hurt.
“Don’t try and talk, wait until you’ve gained some energy ok?” he looked at me with his big brown eyes.
I smiled at him gently.
“You’ve been out for a few hours, you went into shock, I don’t really know why, I think the doctors wanted to talk to you about it first. Seeing as I’m only your friend they wouldn’t tell me anything. But you and the baby are both fine for now. Everything seems to be perfectly fine.” He paused, as if he was about to say something else, when there was a knock on the door.
“Cali?” I recognised Cooper’s voice immediately. He rushed around to the other side of my bed and kissed my forehead gently. “How are you feeling?”
“She shouldn’t speak yet.” Vic said, a little too quickly and protectively. Cooper shot him a look. The tension was so thick in the air.
“What are you doing here Vic? She’s my girlfriend.” Cooper seethed.
“Right, so why was she crying over you? And where have you been since she got in?” Vic retorted, grasping my hand again.
“Piss off, I had things to do.”
“Are you awake now dear?” A new voice came into the room. The nurse walked up and the two men stepped away. The older grey haired woman checked my heart monitor and took my blood pressure, writing on a clipboard. She obviously couldn’t feel the thickness of the air around the two men.
“Alright Cali, everything’s looking good. I’ll let the doctor know you’re awake and then if he allows it I’ll get you something to drink.
“Thank you,” I whispered, finally managing to get my voice to work. Vic’s face lit up as I spoke, he seemed happy to hear my voice.
Cooper came back up to my bedside and smiled at me, “hopefully I’ll be able to take you home tonight or tomorrow.”
“There’s no way I’m letting her go anywhere with you.” Vic spat angrily. Ugh seriously guys?
“Who are you to stop me?!” Cooper yelled back before Vic’s phone broke the awkwardness in the room by ringing. I watched as he frowned at it before pressing answer.
“Hey Dave,” His frown suddenly turned into surprise as he continued listening to the man on the other end. “Um yeah. I’m with them right now actually.. I’d be fine with it, they’re a good band.” Cooper and my band? “Ok thanks for letting me know, talk later.” Vic hung up and smiled at us. “So I have some news. My manager’s trying to get your band to open for us on our two month tour coming up.”
“Really!?” I asked with as much excitement I could muster. This is so great! I’ll be able to see him and Mike and the guys every day and travel with them!
Cooper’s phone rung before he had a chance to react.
“It’s Ian,” He smiled. “Hi Ian, I assume this is about the Pierce the Veil Tour? Yep I think we’re both happy to do it.” He sent me a questioning glance and I nodded. “Yep great, thanks Ian.”
“Two months huh? Cali are you sure you’re going to be up to it?” Cooper asked gently after he’d hung up. “You’ll be eight months pregnant by the end of it, and it’ll be pretty tiring.”
“I wouldn’t miss this! Plus almost everyone who’s been looking after me will be on the tour, I may as well go.” I told them, my voice getting stronger.
“Touring is hard and tiring, but you’ll going to have plenty of care. We’ll be able to organise a seat for you onstage and you’ll only need to be onstage for 30 minutes per performance, so I think you should be fine.” Vic smiled down at me.
Someone in the doorway cleared their throat and knocked lightly on the door. “Can I come in?”
“Of course,” Vic answered for me.
“My name is Dr Ray, I saw you over when you first arrived.” The short stocky man introduced himself. “So, when you came in you were in shock and had blacked out. We did a few tests and looked at your heath and your baby’s health and everything seems to be ok. Ms Hill have you had any heart problems in the past?”
My thoughts flew around, digging for any memories of heart problems... oh.
“Y-yes, this happened once before, but I don’t remember it well. I was about to be attacked and blacked out for two days.” I had tried to block that memory.
“Ok, how long ago was this?”
“Two years I think.”
Vic gave me a sad smile and squeezed my hand.
“Alright. I’ll look into this and come back to talk to you again.” Dr Ray walked back out and pulled the door closed.
“Who was attacking you Cali?” Cooper asked, worry written all over his handsome face.
“I don’t know, I was walking home from a bar late one night with Fay and it happened. Fay apparently scared him off then called an ambulance. It was no big deal, but I’m just a little worried that it’s happened again.” I replied honestly. The memory was very faint, I think I’d had slight amnesia when I’d blacked out because the whole ordeal was quite foggy in my mind.
“Sorry to hear that,” Vic sat down in the chair by my bed.
“Ok Ms Hill, I’ve just been to talk to another doctor and we think you may have anxiety. This is a form that we don’t see very often. Majority of people having anxiety attacks get short of breath, but with yours it appears that you just black out. Your heart beats slightly slower than the average heart, which also means you have short circulation, which plays a part in these black outs. There isn’t very much we can do unfortunately. There are pills that will stop the attacks, but I personally wouldn’t advise you take them whilst pregnant.” Dr Ray finished.
That was a lot to take in.
“Will the short circulation have any problem when I have my baby?” I asked weakly... I couldn’t bear the thought of something going wrong and me losing the baby this far along.
The doctor frowned, “We’re not sure. You may end up getting short of breath – which is worst case scenario. That might mean you black out and we’d have to take you to emergency. But I don’t think you should worry about that unless it happens. I would recommend that you avoid high stress and possibly dangerous situations until then.” That shouldn’t be too hard.
“Um, Doctor, Cali’s a guitarist in a band and we’re meant to be going on tour for two months very soon, do you think that will be safe?” Cooper asked uncertainly.
“I think so, as long as you’re kept quiet and don’t excerpt yourself too much.” The Doctor glanced down at his clipboard. “If that’s all the questions you have I think I’m done here.”
We thanked the doctor and he walked out.
He had barely left the room when three people rushed in, all chatting loudly and acting boisterous.
Mike, Jaime and Tony surrounded the foot of my bed and stared down at me solemnly all of a sudden.
“Are you alive?” Jaime whispered staring at me with wide eyes.
“I think so,” I whispered back playfully.
“Phew, I got worried for a second. Whoa Cali you are looking very…”
“Pregnant.” Tony finished with a smile.
“I’m six months along now.” I grinned at them.
“You must be Cooper?” Jaime turned to my boyfriend. “And I assume the baby’s father?”
Uh oh. Cooper tensed and glanced between me and Vic. “Actually...” I started to say slowly. “He’s not.”
“Is it Vic’s?” Tony asked confidently. Well that was easy.
Vic nodded and stared at his friends quizzically. “Yeah actually.”
“Yes!” Tony yelled and Jaime groaned loudly, looking very disappointed.
“What the hell is going on?” I demanded, looking at each of the guys around me carefully.
“Hime and I had a bet. After we first found out you were pregnant, when we got back from tour I figured out it was Vic’s, but Jaime said there was no way it could be. Anyways, I just won $100!” Tony looked so excited, his cheeks were popped right up and his dermal piercing was sticking out.
“Wow really?” Vic laughed at his weird friends. I glanced at Mike. It seemed like he hadn’t stopped glaring at Cooper the entire time he’d been here. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for Cooper, I really did like him a lot.
I reached out my hand and grasped onto Cooper’s. He smiled gently down at me. What was I supposed to do with these guys? I already had the two Fuentes brothers angry at my boyfriend, and it wouldn’t be long until the rest of their band felt the same. But I loved both Cooper and Vic, who was I supposed to choose? The father of my child? Or the man who actually cared for me when I needed it? This tour is going to be interesting.
