Raising Chandler

Earthquakes, Diners, And The Relevance Of Trees

"What about Ella?" I asked, and Jaime nodded. "She's coming too, we'll okay it with the doctors and once we get her checked out, she's coming with us," he said. I looked at the time on the microwave. It was already almost midnight, I didn't realize how long we'd been home.

I yawned, and Jaime followed suit. "Let's go to bed, hopefully they'll let Ella loose tomorrow. She looked like she was feeling better when we left," he said, and I nodded. He went back to his bedroom and I folded out the couch. I put another disc into the player and pressed play. It was in the backyard of a pretty big house, there was a pool and there seemed to be a family-only barbeque going on. I recognized two of the men from before; Vic and Mike, and Uncle Jaime was in this one. It looked older than the last one, and when Alli, my mom, walked into view, I realized why- it looked like she had a giant watermelon stuffed under her shirt!

She waddled over to my real dad, who kissed her forehead, then bent down and kissed her belly. Lilly ran past the camera, and the man I recognized as Mike followed soon after, and pushed her into the pool. Everyone laughed and the camera shook a bit. After the camera stilled, the man named Tony came out from behind it. He walked slowly over to Jaime and wrapped his tattooed arms around my uncle.

I saw him grin and then fall backwards into the pool, taking Jaime with him. They went under then came up laughing. By this time Lilly had pulled Mike in, and the only two dry people were my parents. Alli waddled behind the camera, then the screen went black.

I closed my eyes, imagining what Ali and Vic must've been like in person. I soon fell asleep, and that night, I dreamed of my parents and the uncles who left Jaime and I behind.

I awoke to slight shaking. I jumped up, thinking it was an earthquake, but calmed down once I saw that it was Jaime....and Ella. I smiled at her. "They let you come home with us?" I asked. She nodded, "Reluctantly, but they really had no choice," she said laughing a bit.

Jaime threw me my shirt from across the room. "Let's get some breakfast and go on that road trip," he said, half-smiling. I nodded and pulled the shirt over my head, then threw the sheets off and got up. I put my blue jeans back on and then my shoes.

"Ready?" he asked, and Ella and I both nodded. We headed for his car.

Ella and I climbed into the back seat and buckled in. Jaime started the car, and a the radio turned on. About ten minutes down the road, a song came on the radio that I'd never heard before, so I closed my eyes and listened to the lyrics.

As we wake up in your room,
Your face is the first thing I see,
The first time I've seen love,
And the last I'll ever need,

You remind her that your future would be nothing without her,
Never lose her, I'm afraid,
Better think of something good to say

But it's all been done, more than once so I'll keep on trying,
Oh God don't let me be the only one who says...

No! At the top of our lungs,
There's no, no such thing as too young,
When second chances won't leave you alone,
Then there's faith in love

She was always the one,
I'll repeat it again, the one,
No such thing as too young,
Red lights flash in the car we're kissing in,
Call me crazy,

I've always tried to remind her that the future's
Just a few heartbeats away from disaster.
I'm afraid that I've thrown it all away.

No! At the top of our lungs,
There's no, no such thing as too young,
Second chances won't leave you alone

No at the top of our lungs,
There's no, no such thing as too young,
Second chances won't leave you alone

We'll repeat it again,
There's no, no such thing as too young,
Second chances won't leave you alone,
'Cause there's faith in...

If you kiss me goodnight,
I'll know, everything is alright,
Second chances won't leave us alone,
Won't leave us alone,
'Cause there's faith in love

I opened my eyes again as the song ended, and noticed a tear rolling down Uncle Jaime's cheek. The man on the radio started to speak.

"That was a song called Kissing In Cars, by a band with a great start, but an unfortunately short career. The band was called Pierce The Veil, and consisted of four talented men- Vic and Mike Fuentes, Tony Perry, and Jaime Preciado. The band ended about twelve years ago, when a tragic car crash took three of the four members. Pierce The Veil's only remaining member, Jaime Preciado, is said to have quit music altogether to assist in the raising of the only Fuentes that survived- The son of singer, Vic Fuentes. They were a great band, and will never be forgotten by their many adoring fans. Jaime, if you're out there, we love you and the boys and miss you dearly. Now, in other, happier news-" the announcer said, but Jaime reached over and turned off the radio. I felt tears running down my face, and I noticed Jaime's one tear turned to many. Actually, he was crying so hard that he pulled over in a nearby park.

We got out and followed him into the park. He led us to a tree, then he sat under it. I looked at our surroundings. Off in the distance, I noticed a small building that looked like a quaint diner. On the other side was a worn-out swing set and merri-go-round. I felt like I'd been here before...maybe I played here with my little sister and Alli and Vic?

I sat next to Jaime and closed my eyes, envisioning Alli and Vic pushing Clara and I in the swings. Alli was smiling and talking to Vic, who was laughing. Clara and I were bouncing in the kiddie swings and giggling loudly, like babies do.

I smiled and opened my eyes, just to see Jaime and Ella looking at me. Jaime smiled and put his arm around my shoulder. "You have the same visionary imagination your mother had, huh?" he asked. I nodded.

Jaime stood and I followed. "We're going to walk over and eat at that little diner over there," Jaime said. He started to walk, and I grabbed Ella's hand and dragged her that way. I looked at the tree we were under and noticed a carving right before we left.
"M&L
Forever&Always"

I wondered if it was Mike and Lilly. Maybe Jaime stopped at this particular park for a reason..

We arrived at the diner in a matter of minutes, and when we got there, and older waitress' face lit up. "Jaime!" she said in a raspy voice. She walked towards him and threw her arms around his neck, and a the scent of cigarette smoke hit me so hard I almost coughed. "I haven't seen you in years, hun," she said as she pulled herself off of my uncle. He smiled back at her. "It has been a long time, Miss Gina," he agreed.

She turned to look at Ella and I. "Is this the boy?" she asked, putting her hand on my shoulder and looking at Jaime. He smiled and nodded. "Yes, this is my little survivor. He's thirteen years old now," my uncle replied, and 'Miss Gina' wrapped her arms around me and hugged me tightly.

"You don't remember me Chan, but your mama and daddy used to bring you and your sister and those rowdy band boys here a lot. I was always the waitress, I haven't seen you since you were this high though," she said, pulling away and lowering her hand to barely above the ground for emphasis.

She shook her head, and turned back to my uncle. "You want their old booth," she asked quietly. A single tear rolled down his face and he nodded. "Follow me then," she said, then started off to the corner of the diner, with the three of us trailing behind.

Ella looked at me in complete confusion, and I silently told her I'd explain the story later. We sat down and Gina wandered off, leaving us to take in the memories of our surroundings. I closed my eyes again and leaned back. What I saw this time though, wasn't as pleasant.
