Raising Chandler

Remember The Influence

It appeared that I was watching from the booth closest to the entrance.

The scene began with a door slamming open. I felt myself jump slightly as I heard it bang against the wall outside. I saw Vic walk through the door and scan the restaurant. His steps were quick and his face was red. He stopped in front of the booth in the back- the one Miss Gina had seated us at- except, it wasn't Jaime, Ella, and I sitting there. It was Mike, and my mom.

My mom wasn't pregnant, but she wasn't with me or my sister. Vic put his hands on the table, causing my mom to jump and Mike to look up. I heard my father yell something, but I couldn't make out what he was saying. He pointed towards the door and Alli stood and began to walk my way with her head hung slightly.

She went out the door, Vic following quickly behind her. As Alli walked by, I noticed that she was shaking slightly and her eyes were brimmed with tears.

When they were both outside, I looked back to the booth. Mike looked startled for a moment, then stood and sprinted in my direction, then out the door. I turned and looked through the window beside me. I saw the trio standing there, Mike to the side slightly, and Vic in front of Alli. My dad held his hands out and was yelling at my mom. Mike stepped in front of Alli, and I saw his lips form the words "calm down" as he put his hands lightly on my dad's shoulders. Vic shoved him out of the way, and yelled something at him.

Mike continued to try and talk to him calmly, but Vic was having none of that. He hit Mike hard enough to knock him back. I noticed my mom take a step back, and Mike came back, shoving my dad down to the ground and holding him there. He yelled at my dad, who struggled, then kicked him in the stomach.

I looked at my mom, then I closed my eyes. I couldn't watch this anymore. The last thing I saw was my mom crying and screaming the word "stop" over and over again.

I opened my eyes to see Ella and Jaime staring at me. Both looked confused. I shook my head and smiled, then tried to make conversation.

"So what was your best memory here?" I asked Jaime. He smiled and closed his eyes, laughing a bit.
"Well..." he started, and I listened intently. I wanted to know as much about the people I didn't remember as possible.

He told a story about he and my Uncle Tony from when they were in high school. He said that he had taken Tony here on their first official date. He said they had just gotten back from a park screening of an old horror movie called "Arachnophobia", because Tony had suggested it in an attempt to look brave, even though Jaime knew he was terrified of spiders. Apparently at some point during their meal, Jaime stuck a couple of small plastic spiders onto Tony's plate, and when Tony looked down and saw them, he squealed like a little girl and stood up. Jaime said he picked one up and Tony nearly passed until he realized it was plastic. Jaime said that he'd laughed and Tony hit him in the arm and then pouted for the rest of the night, which had given him the opportunity to kiss his crush and make everything better.

Jaime finished telling the story and his mouth twisted into a nostalgic smile. Our dishes came shortly after and the three of us busied ourselves with eating. The restaurant gradually emptied out and soon it was only us. It was quiet until I heard the door open. Two men walked in and were seated a few booths away from us. Their orders were taken and soon the quiet restaurant was filled with the laughter and words of the men. I watched their reflection in the window, while Ella and Jaime finished their food. I noticed that they sat in the same seat, and that one was leaning slightly on the other. I smiled and looked at Jaime, then back at them. I imagined that's what Tony and Jaime would've been like.

I looked back down at the burger I'd been eating. I picked it apart and began to nibble on the bun. I didn't have much of an appetite after my little "vision". I was concentrating so hard on eating my burger that I didn't notice one of the guys get up and walk over to our table. When he said something, I looked up.

He was smiling and looking at Jaime. "Are you Jaime Preciado?" he asked, obviously trying to contain his excitement. Jaime smiled and nodded, putting his fork down. "I am," he replied. "C-can I hug you?" the boy asked, his excitement seeming to fade into anxiety. Jaime stood up. "Of course. May I ask why?" he said, hugging the skinny man. The other guy joined him at our table, and the one who hugged Jaime grabbed his hand.

"Well, um...my boyfriend and I saw Pierce The Veil at Warped Tour when we were in high school and we met you and Tony...I got to talk to you guys and....well...you and Tony coming out together...you guys gave us the courage to come out, and now we've been together for nearly 13 years. We're even planning to get married soon, and...I'm just so grateful that we got to meet again so I could tell you that if it weren't for you, Marcus and I probably wouldn't have come this far together. I...we...wanted to say thank you," the young man explained.

I thought Jaime was going to cry. He held out his arms and hugged both of them. "I'm so proud of the two of you, and congratulations on the engagement!" he said. "Can I get your name?" he asked them.

"Heck yeah! You can even get an invitation to the wedding, ha. I'm Marcus, and this is Ricky," the other man spoke up. "I'm so glad we got to thank you in person!"

"I'm glad I got the chance to meet the two of you as well," Jaime replied. Ricky shyly looked at his hand, which was holding an unused napkin. "I know this is kind of weird and selfish, but can I get an autograph? I'm still a huge fan of you and the guys," he mumbled. "Sure," Jaime smiled. "As long as I can get that wedding invitation I heard about," he laughed.

Both Marcus and Ricky's faces lit up, and Ricky nodded excitedly. "Are you serious? You'd want to come?" he asked in disbelief. "Of course! I'd love to be a part of something so big," he replied, taking the napkin and pulling a marker conveniently from his back pocket. He signed the napkin, and wrote his phone number on it as well. "Text me the details, okay?" he smiled. Both of the guys were practically beaming. "Will do!" Marcus exclaimed, then they returned to their table and began talking excitedly again.

Jaime sat down, and smiled for the rest of the time we were there. As we left, I heard him whisper something to himself, and then smile and look up. I'd almost completely forgotten what I'd seen take place just outside my window. Almost.
