High School Never Ends

Mike held me tightly as my body shook violently from crying. Even after I had begun to calm down, he still didn’t let go.
“What is it?” He asked softly
“When… When I was younger my Dad left us. We didn’t know why, but he left a note. Paige being the older sister read the note and kept it wherever she went. I never wanted to read it, so I never did. When she died, I didn’t have any idea where the note went… Until today.” I explained
“Wh-who would do something like this?” Mike asked in disbelief
“The rival.” I suggested. “I’m glad they did. I can let go of him now. He’s no longer the man I believed he was. He didn’t even have the heart to explain to us why. Just 5 words: I love you girls, bye.”
“I’m sorry.” Mike looked down
“I just really needed to tell someone. Thank you.” I whispered
Slowly, Mike leaned towards me and softly pressed his lips against mine.
“I think we need to stop doing that.” I giggled as we broke away
“I don’t see why.” Mike smirked
“You said we can’t be together, Mike.” I countered
“Things have changed.”
“Oh, why wasn’t I informed of this change?”
“Because I only made the decision tonight.”
“What changed your mind?”
“The tightness in my chest when I can’t hold you. The fear of losing you. The desperation to kiss you. Just to name a few.”
I sat speechless, unable to make any words come out of my mouth.
“I love you.” Mike whispered. “I don’t think I’m going to be able to make it without you.”
“How did this happen?” I asked
“What?”
“Us. I hated you a few weeks ago.”
“Gee, thanks.” Mike sighed
“You were cocky. Well, you still are but I love that now. I just don’t understand.”
“It’s happened the same way everything else has happened. It’s surreal, I know. But it’s reality Ari.”
“When did you grow up?” I smirked
“Hey!” Mike pouted
“I guess we should get ready to go and talk with the dealer.”
“Yeh.” Mike sighed, standing up
He headed towards the door with me following closely behind. I stopped Mike before he could open the door.
“Mike?”
“Yeh?”
“I love you too.” I whispered and kissed him on the cheek before opening the door.
