The Life and Lies of The How-To Manual

How To Prank Victor Vincent Fuentes

A Month Later….

I yawned, squeezing my eyes tighter. It had been about a months, maybe three weeks, since we had stopped at that little town with the rollercoaster and amusement park. Every day, I had been feeling better and better. My vision had slowly started to reappear to where I was seeing mostly fuzzy colors. It was like everything was through a really dirty window. Sometimes, everything was grey and dull, other times, the world was colorful. Either way, all I could see was fuzzy blotches of colors. If I tried to look at Jaime, his face was just a large brown lump, like stupid dirt.

If only I could see clearly again.

Last night, Jack and Alex had spent all night trying to locate the best place to light off fireworks. Rian, Zack, and Mike had been in charge of getting all the fireworks. They may or may not have had to cross some borders to get the best types, a.k.a, the illegal fireworks.

We were currently in Utah, the great American desert. There was plenty of open, free expanses of space to light off as many fireworks as we want. On the upside, the boys could yell and scream their heads off like girls at a concert if they wanted to. No one would hear them.

“Ding, Ding, MD, Willow…” A voice whispered to me. I shoved the voice away and curled under my blanket.

“Leave a message at the beep and shove off. Beeeeeeep.” I grumbled.

“But it’s the Fourth! Come on, Willow. Tony and Autumn are playing tag outside and Vic wants to see if he can get at tan. I want to make a smiley face on his stomach and when he burns, it’ll show up.” Jaime whined. I pushed his face away and turned over, keeping my eyes shut.

“I was having a wonderful dream about cereal and seeing, but you know what? You woke me up from it.” I grumbled back.

“But I love you.”

“Is that supposed to earn you special rights? When I’m in bed, I ain’t getting out until I can taste my own breath.” I sassed. Jaime chuckled and pawed at the blankets.

“But you’re going to miss out on the prank! Vic’s going to fall asleep any minute and we have to act fast.” Jaime whimpered. I turned over, opening my eyes to glare at the brown blob that had been plaguing me for the past three weeks.

No. He wasn’t a brown blob.

He wasn’t a brown blob of fuzzy colors anymore.

He was Jaime Preciado, sharp and in focus.

I gasped. He looked confused.

I can see.

I can see.

I can see!

“JAIME!” I yelled, grabbing his shoulders. He shrieked out of fear and shook.

“Don’t hurt me!”

“Stop being a butt-queef, just for a moment!” I yelled. I reached up, grabbing his face, cupping it in my hands. I could see each little crinkle in his smile, the little dimples that I adored so much. I saw his beautiful brown eyes that I couldn’t help but adore. I saw each tiny little crease his forehead as he looked at me with worry. His hair was messed up from sleeping in my bunk, tossing and turning. I ran my hands through his messy hair, feeling the soft strands, silky in my fingers.

“Jaime…” I whispered, going back and cupping his face. He looked at me in confusion.

“I can see.”

“What?”

“I can see! I can see clearly! It’s all gone! I’m not blind anymore!” I cheered. He scooped me into a hug, keeping me prisoner in his arms. I could feel myself nearly sob in happiness. I could see my world again and I could talk. I was finally…fixed. I was a normal person again.

“I can’t believe it. I can’t believe.” Was all he could say. His lips kissed the hollow behind my ear, holding me tightly.

Right at that moment, a flying Tony came in screaming. We looked out of the bunk. He was face first on the floor, moaning in pain.

“TONY! What happened!?” Jaime asked seriously. Tony looked up. I looked to the ceiling. Mike peered over the edge of the open top hatch. Did Tony just fall through…?

“I fell from the roof.”

“That was a spectacular entrance, although I think you might have messed up your ankle.” Jaime pointed out.

“TONY! YOU FELL!” Mike observed loudly.

“NO, REALLY?” Tony yelled back sarcastically. I sighed. Those two were meant to destroy the world, I swear.

“TONY! Stop falling from things! That’s bad for your health! Plus, who’s going to make me pancakes now?” Autumn clucked as she looked down from the roof. I waved.

“Hey Autumn!”

“Hello, babe. How’d you sleep?” She asked me. I shrugged.

“Just fine.”

“Oh just tell her already.” Jaime elbowed me. I grinned and nodded. My blue haired friend passed me a curious look.

“What happened?” She questioned as Tony moaned on the floor, rolling over to face us. Perhaps we should find a hospital for him? Nah, he can wait.

“I CAN SEE AGAIN! I’M NOT BLIND ANYMORE!” I said excitedly. She yipped and cheered.

“NO WAY!” She screamed and fist pumped the air. That was the moment she slipped and fell into the bunks, landing right on top of Tony.

“OWWWWW!” Turtle yelled. Tony padded Autumn’s landing, so she landed unharmed, unlike Tony who was writhing under the weight of his girlfriend.

“I’m so happy for you, babe!” She laughed and gave me a hug. I giggled and pointed to Tony, who was gasping for air.

“Um, you might want to help Tony.” I pointed out. Jaime patted his friend’s back.

“You alright, Tone?” Himes asked. He shook his head.

“No, not at all!” He gasped. Autumn rolled off of him and poked at his side.

“Are you alive?” She questioned.

“I don’t think so.” He grumbled. She leaned down, kissing his nose.

“I’ll get some ice for that ankle, baby.” She said and walked off, leaving Tony alone on the floor. Mike called down to us.

“Congrats, MD! Now, um, maybe we should help Tony out?” Mike asked. Tony made a shooing motion to Mike.

“Just get away from the hatch before you fall in to!” He called in pain. We watched as he propped himself on his elbows and started to use his arms to drag his body to a couch, and crawl up. He lay on his stomach, sighing in relief. Mike locked the hatch so no one else could fall in.

Autumn returned from the mini fridge, going over to Tony’s ankle and place a bag of freezing ice on it. He hissed for a moment before relaxing. My friend sat next to him, rubbing his back soothingly. Every time Tony whimpered, she would just kiss his cheek and continue rubbing his back.

“Now how about we go and prank Vic?” Jaime asked me. I nodded and followed him out of the bunk. He took my hand, lacing his fingers in between mine, gently pulling me along behind him. Oh, this would be good!

An hour later…

It was about noon when Vic crawled down the ladder, stretching and yawning. We were all basking and running around in the desert. We had parked the bus in a very open area with no one living in the surrounding five mile radius. The main highway leading to the nearest town was six miles back.

Jaime and I had broken the news to everyone. Jack had picked me up in a hug, spinning me around until I got dizzy. Alex, Zack, and Rian were all cheering and yelling loud enough to wake Vic up. Currently, Tony and Autumn were still back in the bus. Mike, Alex, Zack, and Rian are all playing Frisbee with their shirts off. It was hotter than Chris Hemsworth out here. I mean, on a scale of Nicki Minaj (not hot) to Chris Hemsworth (super hot), it was well above a Hemsworth standard.

“Hello guys! Can I join?” Vic asked. He came out in his board shorts and with a grin on his face. Everyone froze, just staring at him.

“Um, Vic….” Jack said, wide eyes. Jaime and I looked at each other, locking eyes and winking, before going back to staring at the singer.

“What?” He asked curiously, putting his hands on his hips. You know, if it wasn’t for the two pale handprints over his man boobs, he would be gorgeously tan, like a Spanish male model. Yeah, he was tan. Very tan.

Basically, what Jaime and I did was after Vic put on his tanning lotion or sunscreen, we gently moved his hands over his chest so it looked like two hands had been…all over him and frozen right there. It was quietly hilarious, actually. He was tan with those two really pale prints that stood out like a sore thumb.

“Victor, were you with some girl when you were on top of the bus?” Rian asked slowly. Vic shook his head, looking confused.

“The only two girls on the bus are Autumn and MD. Neither of them were up there with me.” Vic walked forward. Jack was hard at work trying to stop laughing. I whacked his arm.

“Then did you fall asleep groping yourself or what?” Zack chuckled. Vic scowled and looked down. He saw two white, perfectly shaped hand prints on his chest and shrieked.

“WHAT THE HELL!?!?!” HE shouted. We all erupted into laughter. Vic’s face turned a bright red.

“Who did this!?” He looked around. Jaime chuckled.

“What happened, Vic? Got a little lonely?” Jaime stuttered. Vic blushed and scowled.

“It was you guys, wasn’t it? Haha, very funny.” Vic turned to Jack and Alex. They both looked surprised.

“No, it really wasn’t us! I mean, if it was us, Alex and I would’ve written ‘Jalex waz here.’” Jack shrugged. Alex went over to his friend’s side. I leaned forward in my chair, studying everyone. The group looked at each other, still grinning.

“If it was me, I would’ve put his hands right inside his pants, so it burned like-“ Rian started. Zack slapped his arm.

“Okay, no more detail.” I chuckled and clapped my hands over my ears.

“Who was it? Was it Tony?” Vic asked again.

“I can safely say it wasn’t Tony. He fell through the roof and I think might have twisted his ankle, and then Autumn fell on top of him. They’ve been in the bus all afternoon.” Mike claimed. I nodded to affirm it.

There was a long pause. I locked eyes with Jaime. What was going to be our alibi? What would we say?

“Um, I did see Himes and Ding on the roof.” Alex suggested. My eyes went wide at the traitor.

“No, no, it wasn’t us.” I started out, holding up my hands in defense.

“Wait, yes it was! You two were talking about the weirdest sunburns earlier today!” Mike cheered. Everyone agreed. Jaime’s eyes widened to match mine. We both swore and leapt up.

“RUN!” I yelled.

“YOU TWO BUTT-QUEEFS!” Vic raged and chased after us. Jaime caught up to me easily, breathing heavily as we ran to the bus.

“Split up!” He coughed. I nodded and ran to one side of the bus and Himes went to the other. I went to the door, banging on it. It was locked.

“Autumn! Let us in!” I yelled. She pulled back the curtain, looking at me curiously. She pointed at an angry little man storming my way.

“Sorry, doll face! Tony’s whining that it’s too loud.” She shrugged and closed the curtains. I gave a final pound on the door in frustration before turning and running again. Vic was yelling insults in Spanish at me for messing up his even tan.

I looked behind me to see Vic hot on my tail. When I turned around, Jack had swooped me up in his arms, locking my wrists with one strong hand.

“Get her, Vic!” He chuckled.

“JACK BASSAM BARAKAT LET ME DOWN!” I yelled at him. He took his free hand, clapping it over my mouth and muting all noise. Alex wolf whistled from the corner.

“It’s serious, Barakat! She used your middle name!”

“It’s Lebanese and it’s very cute!” He chuckled. I tried to wriggle away from his grasp and Vic slowed down, stopping in front of us.

“Lemme go!” I mumble against his hand.

“She’s ticklish, Fuentes. Get your revenge now while you can.” Jack chuckled. Vic grinned. He poked my side. I giggle and struggled against Jack’s grasp. Vic poked me over and over and I melted, my resolve dissolving as I laughed and lost my breath. Collapsing to the grainy earth, I fell out of Jack’s hands, laughing loudly. Vic stood back up.

“St…ahahahaha…o…ahaha..p!” I choked out. He let me go and turned around.

“Where’s Preciado?” He questioned. Jack pointed to Mike and Rian pulling Jaime out from under the bus. Jaime yelled for me to run but I couldn’t. Jack stood over me, grinning.

“You’re horrible.” I groaned from exhaustion. He offered me a hand up. I leaned against his chest, still regaining my posture.

“Put him in the box! Yeah! The box!” They all cheered. Vic rolled out a box on wheels. It was barely large enough for someone to hunch down and squeeze in. I gasped.

“Oh please, not the box!” I begged them. They shook their heads.

“FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING PLEASE NOT THE BOX!” Jaime pleaded. They didn’t seem to hear them because soon enough, Vic was shoving the taller man into the box, locking it shut. I heard Jaime shouting and pleading, trying to shake the box over. I ran to his side.

“He’s staying in there for an hour or so.” Vic told me. I sighed, bending down to the side of the box. They had a combo lock on it and of course, I had no clue what the combination was.

“Jaime?”

“Willow?” His muffled voice came back.

“Are you okay? I can beat the combo out of Vic, if you want.” I offered. He sighed, barely heard.

“No, it’s fine. I’ll be out soon enough. My neck might hurt later, but I’ll be fine.”

“Oh, okay. I love you, Himes.” I added. He chuckled.

“I love you to, MD. Vic took it easy on you. We’ll have to get him back at some point.”

“Of course, babe.” I laughed and walked off. I’ll talk to him later, but for now, I had a little bit of Frisbee to play.

Ok so you have a lot to answer for considering it’s 2 am, I have to be up in 3 hours and I’m bawling my eyes out.
If you see this, thank you for writing such a beautiful story in both this and the first part. Even though it was fanfiction, I connected with it, having just lost my cousin to a brain tumour that basically turned him into Willow. He lost most of his basic function in a very similar way to Willow, and then died in the final hours of his 16th birthday, a year after diagnosis. The way you wrote this made me relive that, and your writing took me on a journey
TL:DR I'm crying, thank you. <3
