Memories that Haunt Us

Celebratory Pancakes

JC’s POV

Momma came home really upset yesterday, but she seemed fine this morning. I mean, who wouldn’t be fine? We were having pancakes since Uncle A-a-ron was coming home from the hospital! Daddy said that since somebody attacked Uncle A-a-ron, we would celebrate him getting better.

“Daddy, can I have sprinkles on my pancake?” I stuck next to my father’s side. He smiled down at me.

“Sure. Just don’t tell Mom.” He whispered. I smiled and put a finger to my lips. Daddy let us have special treats like this sometimes. Beth was still sleeping in Momma’s room and Arabelle upstairs reading. After giving Dad another hug, I skipped out to the living room where Uncle was on the couch watching some rerun of the football game he missed while in the hospital.

“Hey JC!” Uncle A-a-ron smiled down to me. Out of Uncle Phil, Tino, and him, I liked A-a-ron the most. He always was willing to joke around with me and play. Even today, his spirits didn’t seem to falter.

“Hi!” I climbed up next to the couch to watch the flying football zoom across the lines. It was good to spend time with my uncle.

“So do you like football?” He asked me curiously, his eyes bright. I shook my head and squinted my nose.

“No.” I shook my head. I would rather be at a concert!

“Me either!” He cheered happily and flipped the channel. It was Spongebob.

“Ooh, Spongebob!” He clapped his hands and threw the remote down on the coffee table. I laughed at his reaction to the cartoon. I would’ve thought he saw this as boring! I loved the cartoon, but I didn’t know adults could like it as well.

“Uncle A-a-ron, are you still touring?” I asked him. He laughed at the name. I always called him that, ever since I heard Tino use the name.

“Nothing is going to stop me!” He smiled. His fellow band mate laughed from the kitchen.

“Good!” I cheered. Austin brought out two plates of pancakes. One was topped with whipped cream and the other had my sprinkles. Aaron eagerly dove into his plate.

“Easy there, Pauley!” Austin laughed. I pointed out the dot of whip cream on his nose and he wiped it off. We continued to watch the antics of an animated sponge on the screen before I sighed.

“What is it, little C?” He asked. I put down my fork.

“The bad guy won’t get you, right?” I asked him. Uncle looked down at me questioningly.

“What bad guy?” He asked curiously.

“The bad guy that hurt you.”

“No, he won’t.” Aaron gulped. I smiled.

“He won’t get Mom?”

“No.”

“He won’t get Dad?”

“Nope!”

“What about Arabelle or Bets?” I asked sadly. I didn’t want to think about the bad guy who hurt Uncle hurting my family. Uncle A-a-ron sighed.

“We’ll make sure that they don’t hurt them.” He ruffled my hair as I went to put away the plates. If Uncle A-a-ron said they wouldn’t be hurt, then I would take his word!
