Dear Austin...

My Flightless Angel

Austin's POV

Alan and I heard the crash. He took the lead and sprinted upstairs. We both feared the worst. Taking the turn down the hall at full speed, we slowed only as our bodies hit the door and burst outside.

It barely took me a moment to realize that her father had a gun, and she was trembling by the garage. By the look of his unfocused eyes, he was drunk again. Alan and I popped in front of her.It didn't matter if we took bullet after bullet from this guy, just as long as Rae was safe.

She pounded on our backs as her father shouted insults at both of us. Her pleas for us to move and not die fell on my deaf ears. Alan attempted to talk him down. Meanwhile, I grabbed her arm to calm her down. Her sobs fell into my back as the fight drained out of her. It looked like everything was going to be well when I saw the silver muzzle of the BB gun aim to me.

If I was shot, so be it. It was only a BB gun. Without warning, I saw my world fall apart. The trigger was pulled and Raelyn leaped from behind so that she took the bullet.

"NOOOO!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. Alan flipped out a phone and 911 was dialed before I could let my heart beat for a second time, if it would ever beat again.

Raelyn stood there, looking like a my own beautiful, blonde angle in the light. I thought maybe the bullet had missed. Mr. Croft hopped into his car and took off like the speed of the bullet he shot.

Without warning, she fell to her knees. My own angel fell from her glorious light, like her wings were clipped and ripped off her back by the bullet. I saw the blood start to leak. This wasn't normal for a small pellet gun. I waved a hand in front of her eyes just as she tried to mouth something. Alan came and held her up, one hand to the phone.

Expanding bullet...she mouthed to me. What did that mean? Her eyes widened as the pain increased. Oh, the bullet, it wasn't normal. That's why there was a lot more blood than just the usual wound.

"Hello police, yeah our friend was just shot. No, just a BB gun...I'm sorry sir, but there's a lot more blood than we thought. Shot in the ribs. No, we're driving her to the hospital right now...The license plate was SJE-834. Grey pick up truck. Tall, brown hair...." Alan's words faded as I slowly picked up my girl and took her to the truck.

Alan, as usual, was one step ahead of me. With the phone still to his ear, he hopped in the driver's side and started the car as I cradled Rae on my lap.

"Austin." she breathed out quietly. I leaned in to hear her words.

"What is it, honey?" I asked. The tears started to strangle me. The red was spreading through her old green, shirt.

"Please end the pain." Her voice shattered my heart so that nothing could bring it back together. I let out my own sob as she started to fade. Although I could still feel her warmth, her shallow breath in and out, I panicked.

Tears streamed down my face. How could anyone hurt someone so sweet and innocent? Alan zoomed down the street, clicking the phone off. We drove in silence all the way to the nearest hospital. Somewhere along the main highway, she passed out. Little moans of pain escaped.

When we pulled into the hospital, Alan opened my door and we sprinted into the ER. Two police officers were standing in the waiting room. Alan approached them as I cradled my girl in my arms. Somehow, I managed to speak to the nurses to explain what happened.

A stretcher was wheeled out. Rae's eyes fluttered open. A cry escaped her throat at the sight of the usual room and the agony. A doctor rolled up part of her shirt to expose the wound. It had ripped through her skin, possibly damaging a rib.

"Austin!" Rae cried out to me. I held her hand as they wheeled her away.

"Don't leave me!" Her voice carried as they started to take her away from me. My mouth could barely form the words.

"Never." I whispered as they pushed the stretcher into another room. In the instant, she was gone.

That was one of the hardest times i'd ever cried.

Notes

I'm sorry to make you relive the sadness! I love you all and please forgive me!

This story has completely captured my full attention over the last few hours. I don't think I'll be able to sleep until I finish it. This is wonderful. I adore your writing and characters. Rae and Austin's relationship and the bond between Alan and lp are the most adorable freaking things ever. I've been laughing, wanting to cry, and majorly fangirling. This is beautiful and I love it so much. And the appearance of all of the various band members made me incredibly happy!
Okay back to reading.
