Screams of Silence

Epilogue: I Swear That I’ll Always Paint You Golden Days

Before you read this we have a bit of explaining to do.

Hey. It’s been a while.

I guess we’ll cut to the chase--we won’t be continuing this story any longer.

We both have our reasons and the one mains are that we’re both full time university students, so you can imagine how busy we get, and that we’ve changed since we started this story. And that includes our interest in PTV. PTV will still be important to me since they were the band that got me into all the songs I love and listen to now, and I’m sure Claire can agree too, but we’re also growing, developing new tastes, exploring new things. And we’d rather end this story on a good note where we’ve still got some admiration for the band than make the story longer down the track when we’re not following PTV as much or burnt out by everything that’s going on in our lives.

We’re definitely not ending the story because we were out of ideas. We had heaps but because of the reasons as stated above, we’d rather give you guys a nice epilogue to wrap it up with than give you twenty or so more chapters that were updated sporadically. We hope you can understand.

And it’s also not because Claire and I have beef or anything either! I speak for myself when I say this but I’m so glad that I got to collab with one of my favourite writers. Claire, you’re amazing and so talented. My writing seems so mediocre compared to yours idk how i managed to convince you to write this story with me lol. you’re going to slay whatever comes your way my dude. j love you haha

Lastly, we want to thank everyone who has read, subscribed, voted and commented on this little story of ours. Thank you for sticking with the story, with every bit that you liked or didn’t, the parts that made you smile, laugh, cry or slam your laptop screen shut/throw your phone across the room. You guys are all heading towards great things and we believe in every single one of you. Thank you for giving us love. Thank you for giving the story love. Thank you for giving our Tori and Tony love.

And as our last little act of gratitude, here’s the epilogue. We hope you enjoy it.

Tony was humming down the stairs from the office of his clothing warehouse, pleased that his new winter line concept designs were completed and would be finalised before the end of the month. Though juggling a business, a band and a personal life came with its tough times, he couldn’t look back. He was proud of the person he had become.

Soon enough, he was on the road with the windows rolled down, a relaxed smile on his face as the sound of his favourite song played through the sweet San Diego air. The golden band on his ring finger that complemented Tori’s winked at him as he held the steering wheel.

Tori was another thing that he felt immensely proud of. Her dazzling appearance at her graduation, the utter surprise she had went he attended when she had thought he was at a concert halfway around the world, the complete joy when he had gone down on one knee shortly after, asking her to marry him. Their days together were nothing short of perfect. Every day together was golden. He didn’t think that life could get any better.

But that was before they heard the tiny heartbeat of their unborn daughter.

At first he had his doubts about himself. He hadn’t had the guidance of his own dad since he was a child. How could he be sure that he would make good father? Despite all those anxieties, it grew less and less the rounder Tori’s stomach grew. And if there were any left by the time Tori was due, his worries melted away the first time he held their daughter and fell in love with those same blue eyes her mother had.

From then on, most days seemed like the underlying dream he had always wanted. Pierce the Veil’s comeback album was highly acclaimed and their following tours sold out in many venues. Due to the success of his band, his clothing business went off without a hitch and he couldn’t have done it without the help of Tori designing a few pieces herself.

As he drove down a familiar street, the happy cries of children’s chatter and laughter grew louder. Parents were greeting their kids with a smile on their face while other kids were playing on the playground. Often his ink would lead to a few stares and points but that didn’t matter to him when he was met with his daughter’s wide smile as she caught him in the small crowd of parents.

‘Ellie!” he called, eyeing spotting her dark curls as she stood on top of a porch waiting for her turn to go down the slide. Words couldn’t describe how much he loved her or how much he thought that she was the perfect mix of him and Tori. She had the artistic eye of her mom and the golden fingers of her dad according to his own mother, just as in love with her granddaughter as Tori’s parents were.

“Daddy!” she grinned, giving him a wave before going down the slide and running straight into Tony’s outstretched arms.

He laughed as he caught her. “Hey, princess,” he said, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear. Often Tori would tease him about how much he spoiled their daughter by calling her princess and treating her as one. Even the guys in the band were amazed at how much of a fool Tony was for Ellie. However, they couldn’t disagree that his love for her was something so pure.

“Did you have a good day?”

Ellie nodded, her fingers tracing the outlines of the tattoos on his shoulders. “I missed you and Mom this much,” she replied, stretching out her hands as wide as they could go.

Tony smiled, covering her face with kisses. Her giggle was the sweetest music to his ears. “I missed you and Mom too.”

“What about the baby?” she asked curiously.

Tony raised an eyebrow. “What baby, Ellie?”

She looked around, cupping her hands around one of his ears. “Mommy said there’s a baby growing inside her tummy,” Ellie whispered. “She told me to keep it a secret but I’m too excited that I’m gonna be a big sister.” She stepped away from him, a mischievous grin playing on her lips.

“Don’t worry, Ellie,” Tony replied. “Your secret is safe with me.” Excitement built inside of him at Ellie’s news. “Should we go get Mom from school and get some ice cream before going home?”

“Yeah!” she answered as he scooped her up and headed to the car. During the trip they chatted about their days. Tony was amazed at how grown up Ellie already was at the age of six. It was one thing that constantly reminded him to cherish every moment with her while she was still a child.

Tori taught at a school fifteen minutes away from Ellie’s elementary. Her classroom was one that was abundant in colour with artwork covering every wall and hanging from rows of tweed string lined across the whole room. It was easily one of her favourite places to be, right behind wherever she was when with her family.

She was finishing up pegging up her students’ paintings to dry when she a pair of steps running across the tiled floor and a voice telling the owner of those steps to slow down.

“Mommy!” she heard Ellie cry as she turned to find her daughter rushing towards her.

“My Ellie bear,” she chuckled as she opened her arms for Ellie’s embrace. Tori wouldn’t have thought that she would be so loved and happy with her life ten years ago when she was at her lowest. She wouldn’t have pictured her having her best friend of a husband or their beautiful and mysterious daughter. Every day she was grateful for the love from her family and friends because without it she couldn’t have dug herself out of the hole she had been in.

From a few steps away, Tony admired how picture-perfect his wife and daughter looked. They were two of the most beautiful things he ever had the pleasure of looking at. While Tori held the calmness and grace of water, Ellie was the little spark full of spirit but still just as amazing. He loved that they shared the same smile and infinite blue eyes.

Tori looked up, taking in her husband’s presence. Sometimes she was reminded of the first time she saw him in real life at Phoenix airport all those years ago. Tattooed, handsome and strange, but all too familiar. How his easy smile could give her strength in an instant, how he was her rock. Nothing could deny how in love she was with him—how lucky she was to fall in love with him through every letter he wrote as they grew up and through their days together as they explored Phoenix.

“Hey,” she smiled, lifting Ellie up and walking over to him.

“Hey,” he replied, wrapping his arms around them both. He felt at home whenever he was Tori, and even more so when Ellie had joined their little family. They were a small but rich puzzle that he wouldn’t trade for the world.

He grinned as he caught sight of the silver chain around Tori’s neck. Even after twenty or so years of giving it to her, she still proudly wore the guitar pendant every day.

“Did you have a good day?” Tori asked.

He nodded, leaning down for a kiss. His lips barely grazed hers when—

“Daaaaaad,” Ellie groaned, moving out of Tori’s arms, causing them both to chuckle.

“Sorry, princess,” he apologised, bending down to give Ellie a peck on the cheek, which Tori did as well.

They stopped to have ice cream at the beach as Tony promised before heading home. Rush hour traffic was starting to build up but they didn’t mind it a bit. They had each other to pass the time with. Both Tori and Tony were amazing at how well Ellie could keep them entertained, whether it was through her stories or attempts to sing along with the songs playing on the radio.

“What did you do at school today, Ellie?” Tori asked.

“Our teacher asked us to write a letter about ourselves and he said that he’ll be sending those letters to a school in Seattle. He used a word for it…pen…”

“Pen-pal?” Tony finished for her, a knowing grin playing on his lips.

“Yeah,” she replied. “A pen-pal. We’re going to be writing to them for the whole year.”

“Sounds like you’re going to make a great friend with your pen-pal, Ellie bear,” Tori chuckled, exchanging a glance with Tony. “That’s how me and your dad became best friends.”

“Really?” Ellie gaped. “You’ve been best friends for a really, really long time.”

“And I’m really, really happy that we are,” Tony said, lacing his fingers through Tori’s with his free hand. “By the way,” he continued quietly. “A little bear told me that there was a baby in your tummy,” he admitted, stealing a look from Tori.

Tori opened her mouth in surprise. “Elisa James Perry,” she muttered, shaking her head in defeat of her daughter blurting out their little secret. They rarely called Ellie by her real name. While she was a baby, Tori’s mother slipped out ‘Ellie’, and the name had stuck ever since. It also reminded Tori and Tony of Ella, who was now a happy memory they shared.

“Is that little bear right?” Tony asked.

“She is,” Tori answered. “It’s still a bit early though. I just hope it sticks this time,” she murmured.

Tony lifted their hands and pressed a kiss on the back of her palm. “Don’t worry, it will,” he assured her. Their family had their share of tough times and an unexpected miscarriage was one of them, but they always had each other to lean on. Tony had realised that he could face anything life threw at him as long as he had his two girls. “Everything will be okay, babe.”

Tori squeezed his fingers and cleared her throat. “Ellie, are you excited to see Nana and Grandpa?” Her parents were going to visit from Arizona and they were both looking forward to see how much their granddaughter had grown.

Ellie nodded excitedly. “They’re gonna love the new house.”

“We still have a bit of unpacking to do,” Tony sighed.

“We can do some when we get home. There isn’t much left anyway. Maybe order a pizza for dinner?” Tori suggested.

“Pizza!” Ellie exclaimed, to which her parents both smiled at.

The rest of their afternoon was pleasant. The sun had warmed their house up so windows were opened wide to invite the cool air in. Ellie was drawing in the living room while Tony was busy unpacking a box of living room decorations. Bits and pieces of the past mixed in with their present. A seashell mobile he had given Tori when she moved into her first apartment; small canvases of oil paintings; an array of framed photographs. One of them when they had just become a couple, one on their wedding day, one of them when Ellie was still a newborn and his favourite addition—a recent photo of the three of them at his mother’s birthday smiling and laughing—not looking at the camera, but at each other. A candid moment that captured everything.

He was finishing hanging a frame when the doorbell rang, causing Ellie to look up in alert.

“I’ll get it, princess,” Tony said as she continued back to picture.

He was surprised to see a mailman holding a package at their door. He hadn’t been expecting lately, and didn’t think Tori was either. After signing, he was left curious as to what the contents of the package was.

“Tori,” he called. “Were you supposed to get something from the mail?” he asked. Tony scanned the package, even more surprised to see that the sender was his mom.

“No,” she replied from the top of the stairs. As she went down, he noticed that she was holding a shoebox. “Open it.”

They both head to the living room and sat on the couch. Ellie decided to leave her drawing and joined them, settling on Tori’s lap, holding Tori’s box in her hands. “What’s this?”

“We’ll open it in a bit,” Tori replied, smoothing Ellie’s dark brown curls.

Tony removed the plastic packaging, revealing an old shoebox too. He let out a breath as he finally comprehended what it was. “Whoa,” he breathed. “I can’t believe it.”

“What’s in the box?” Ellie asked, leaning towards Tony as he opened it.

He broke out into a brilliant smile as he fished through the box’s contents. Old photographs, letters and sketches that he received and kept over the years. All from his girl from Phoenix. All from Tori.

“Oh my God,” Tori gasped, reflecting his smile. “You kept them all? Look, Ellie,” she said, taking out an old polaroid. “This was me when I was sixteen. Do I look pretty?”

“You’re always pretty, Mom,” Ellie answered, examining the photo. “Do you have a picture of Daddy when he was that old?”

“I do,” she replied. Tori looked at Tony. “I found your letters as well. I was about to show them to you,” she explained, opening her shoebox. Folded pieces of lined paper, opened envelopes, slightly bent postcards and small photos.

Tony was touched. “You kept them? After all this time?” Her gesture made everything clear—she had always loved him. And he had vowed to spend every day letting her know that he loved her too.

“Of course,” Tori answered. “As if I could get rid of these,” she added, letting out a laugh. “Turtle Boy.”

Tony leaned forward, pressing a kiss to the side of her temple. “Rabbit Girl,” he murmured against her skin.

Together, they showed the first letters they sent to each other to daughter. The letters that began it all. That led them to friendship, heartbreak, love and everything in between. The letters that told their story.
