Blindsided

Two: Young Blood

“Tony! Knock it off!” I gasped out between giggles.

“Nope, never!” he shouted and continued to tickle me.

“Tony!” I yelped again and he just laughed.

We were sitting on the couch at my house, well I was being forced down and he was straddling me as he continued to torture me. The smell of popcorn was in the air and the television was frozen on the blue screen for the DVD player because it was our annual movie night that we had once a week. Tony finally stopped tickling me and I looked up at him – having had my face buried in the cushion of the sofa before – and I smiled up at him while shaking my head. He grinned and then leaned down and put his lips on mine.

I still couldn’t get over the kisses we shared. I had wanted to kiss this stupid boy since I was twelve and now that it was actually happening, it still felt so surreal. I was almost positive I loved him – not that I would say that out loud anytime soon. After that night in the pool – almost two months ago – things between us changed and he asked me to be his girlfriend – stuttering and blushing the entire time.

Tony pulled away from me with a broad smile and grabbed my arms, pinning them above my head with one of his hands. I gave him a questioning look, wondering what he was doing until he gave me a devilish smirk and he was once again tickling me, causing me to laugh and scream.

“Tony, what did I say about making my daughter scream?” My mom asked as she walked into the living room holding a bowl of popcorn and grinning at us.

Tony turned bright red and immediately got off of me, pulling me up into a sitting position next to him. “Sorry Ms. Hayes.” He mumbled, pulling me into his side and I giggled.

“Oh you know I’m just playing Tony,” my mother assured him with another smile as she came over and handed us the bowl of popcorn before she picked up the remote.

My mom sat down next to Tony – being as he was sitting in the middle of the couch – and she turned on the movie. We all nestled deeper into the couch, getting comfortable. It wasn’t until a little while later and the movie was almost over when Tony leaned down, pulling me a little closer to him and he kissed the top of my head before bringing his lips to my ear.

“Rori, I think I love you,” he whispered.

I woke up with a gasp and immediately sat up, only then realizing that there had been an arm wrapped around me. I glanced around me – momentary forgetting about the person next to me – and noticed that I was still on the beach and the sun was just starting to rise. I had fallen asleep out here last night next to a man I didn’t even know, or at least didn’t even remember.

“Fuck,” I heard from beside and I saw Tony sit up quickly. “I’m sorry, I must have fallen asleep.” He mumbled and I turned to see him rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

“It’s okay, I don’t really like being at home,” I muttered, pulling my legs up to my chest, trying to warm myself up.

He sighed. “Do you remember me, I mean, last night?” he said, rushing his words to the end.

“Your name is Tony,” I said quietly and I saw him smile.

“Yeah, um, you said you don’t like to be home, why?” he asked then and I saw him shrugging off his jacket before he placed it over my back and scooted closer to me.

I shrugged. “My mom is just overwhelming me, she’s constantly showing me pictures and telling me things that I just don’t remember – it makes my brain hurt.” I said with a sigh.

Tony sighed angrily. “This is why I wanted you to come home with me.” he mumbled.

“We live together,” I said, and I didn’t realize that I had said it as a statement instead of a question until I saw Tony look at me with a surprised smile.

“Yeah, we do, do you remember that?” he asked, a hopeful tone in his voice.

I shook my head. “No, not really, I just know that I wasn’t living with my mom; it feels wrong to be there. You said you wanted me to come home with you, why didn’t I? Why haven’t I seen you before last night?”

He sighed again – something I think he’s been doing a lot of lately. “When the doctors realized you lost most of your memory, they wanted you to go home with me, to get you back into your routine and maybe it will help trigger things but the only person you could remember was your mom, and, after you freaked out when I tried to tell you who I was, your mom and I got into a huge argument and she wouldn’t let me take you home.”

“Wait, you tried to tell me who you were? Why don’t I remember that if it was after I woke up?” I asked, furrowing my eyebrows.

He frowned, looking out at the ocean. “Like I said, you freaked out, real bad, the doctors had to come in and give you a sedative because your heart rate was getting dangerously high. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you like that.” He mumbled. “Of course, it only made your mom fight me more with taking you home.” He said bitterly.

“How come my mom didn’t want you taking me home with you, you said I was living with you already?” I asked confused, trying to ignore the pain coming from my head with all this new information I was getting.

“Your mom doesn’t really like me,” he said and took a deep breath before he let it out in a huff and shook his head back and forth, seeming to get lost in his thoughts.

“That’s not what I remember,” I mumbled, thinking back to the dream I just had.

“You remember?” he asked, another spark of hope in his voice.

“Uh, no, I mean, not really, I just get these random moments that pop into my head, it’s like I’m watching a movie; I know that the girl in them is me but I just can’t seem to remember actually living it, you know?” I asked, wondering if my explanation made any sense.

He nodded. “The doctor’s mentioned that but it will all make sense to you one day, just don’t overwhelm yourself.” He said quietly before giving me a small, sad smile.

“Why doesn’t my mom like you?” I asked after we were quiet for a moment.

He pursed his lips as a pained look came across his face before he composed himself and turned toward me. “She used to like me but, uh, something happened and she blamed me for it and she never really forgave me.” he explained sadly and another look of pain flashed across his face before he turned back to the ocean.

“What happened?” I asked curiously.

He sighed loudly. “Come on Rori, we should get you home, your mom is probably losing her shit.” He said and started to get up.

“How did you find me here last night? I haven’t told anyone that I was coming here.” I said as I started to get up, dusting off the sand from my body.

He smiled. “You used to always come here when you needed to get away, to escape. You said it was one of the only places where things seemed to make sense.” He looked away and then looked back at me sheepishly. “Plus, at the risk of probably scaring you away, I might have been following you, I’m sorry, I know that’s probably creepy but I need to make sure you’re safe. I usually just stay in my car but I don’t know, something made me get out last night; I needed to see you again. I’m sorry.”

I smiled. “It’s okay, I’m glad you did.” I said quietly and I noticed him grin before he looked down, trying to hide it.

We started walking up toward the parking lot and I spoke up again as we stopped by my car.

“Can I have your phone number? I like talking to you; I feel comfortable around you,” I admitted shyly before looking up at him.

He smiled, seeming happy by my admission. “You already have my number.”

“I don’t have any Tony’s in my contacts,” I muttered, furrowing my eyebrows.

He pursed his lips again, thinking, before he smiled. “What about Han Solo; do you have anyone named that?”

I scrunched my face, trying to picture my call log. “Yeah, I think so.” I finally said.

He grinned. “That’s me.”

“Why is your name Han Solo?” I asked curiously, raising an eyebrow.

He gave me a small smile. “You’ll remember someday, Princess Leia,” he said and before I could even respond he leaned forward and placed a quick kiss on my forehead, which in turn triggered another memory.

I laughed as he opened the door to the studio and bowed down to me, telling me to go first. I gave him a push as I walked by and he grinned before he followed me, taking my hand in his and he swung them back and forth as we made our way to my car.

“Are you going to be here much longer?” I asked as he lifted my arm in the air and made me twirl, and I giggled as I danced around him.

“Maybe another hour, I promise I’ll be home in time for dinner and then we can watch a movie.” He said as we stopped by my car.

“I’m not watching Star Wars,” I warned.

He pouted. “Fine, but I’m not watching The Notebook.” He countered.

“Fine.” I grumbled, giving him a look.

He chuckled. “Alright, we’ll figure it out when I get home but I better get back inside before the guys get pissed.”

I sighed. “Okay, I’ll see you when you get home, I love you.” I said and leaned up to give him a kiss.

“I love you too Rori,” he said and then placed a kiss on my forehead. “Careful driving home, the traffic this time is a bitch and text me when you get there, okay?”

“I will, bye Tone.” I said and unlocked my car.

“Bye babe,” he said and waited until I was inside to close my door for me.

He started walking back toward the studio and I started my car, watching him as he paused at door and waved at me. I smiled and waved back before I pulled out of the parking lot and started my drive back home.

“Rori? Are you okay?” I heard Tony’s voice say and I gasped quietly as I looked up at him to see him staring down at me, a worried look on his face.

“Yeah, I’m fine, sorry, it was just another memory.” I explained, furrowing my eyebrows.

“Do you want to talk about it?” he asked quietly, the worried look still on his face.

I shook my head and gave him a small smile. “No, not right now, I really should be getting home, I’m surprised my mom hasn’t called the police yet.”

He laughed softly. “You never know, she just might have.” He joked and then turned serious. “Hey, call me, okay? If you need to talk or if you need help with trying to make sense of anything, if your mom gets to be too much, I’ll be there, okay?”

I nodded. “I will, thank you.”

“Don’t thank me, you don’t need to. But please, just do me a favor and text me when you get home?” He said quietly.

“I promise.” I agreed.

He gave me a small smile before he started to make his way to what I assumed was his car parked at the other end of the lot. I sighed as I opened my door and climbed in. I started the car and started to back out, somehow knowing that Tony wouldn’t leave until I did. I got back on the main road and concentrated on where I was going but there was something about that last memory that I couldn’t quite shake from my thoughts as I stared down at my hands on the steering wheel.

In that last memory, I had a diamond ring on my left hand ring finger, now though, my fingers were empty, just like my memories.
