Blindsided

Thirteen: Mr. Brightside

“Who could that be?” I asked, sitting up in the bed as Tony rolled out and stood up.

He furrowed his eyebrows. “Not sure, I wasn’t expecting anyone, let me go see, want to come with?” he asked as he headed for the door.

I shook my head. “I’ll stay here.”

He gave me and understanding smile and then headed out the door and down the hall and I was thankful that he left the door open because I was hoping to hear who was there. I sat up more and focused on the sound of Tony opening the door – all the while trying to calm the butterflies that were fluttering madly in my stomach from almost kissing Tony.

“Hey! What are you doing here?” I heard Tony ask with a surprised but happy voice.

“Hey Tone, I’m sorry I was going to call but my phone is dead and I just needed to stop by and see if I can find something Rori was supposed to give me, I seriously can’t wait any longer,” I heard a female voice say – which sounded extremely familiar.

“Have you talked to Mike?” Tony asked then and I heard the door shut again.

“No, I told you, my phone is dead, why what’s up? Oh shit, her appointment was today wasn’t it? Oh my god, what happened, is everything okay?” the woman rushed.

“Calm down Sam, she’s fine.” Tony said quickly though his voice was amused.

I vaguely remembered my flashback from the other night when I had saw Mike and I was pretty sure that I was friends with someone named Sam but I couldn’t remember exactly.

“Fuck Tony, don’t scare me like that!” I heard her say and then I heard what sounded like a slap and Tony let out a groan.

“Jesus Sam,” Tony muttered and couldn’t help but smile. “Actually, there is something you should know,” he started to say and his voice lowered and I couldn’t hear them anymore.

“She’s here!” Sam suddenly yelled, her voice echoing down the hall and I heard Tony trying to say something but Sam continued to yell. “Where?! Where is my Princess?”

And it only took that one name to bring me back to another time.

I laid back into the pillows of the stiff bed, just wishing I could be anywhere but here. I closed my eyes and tried to get some sleep but sleep eluded me, like usual. I found it rather ironic that this whole thing started because I thought I needed to wake up; now though, now I just wanted to sleep. I heard the door to my room open and close but I didn’t open my eyes, hoping that whoever was in here would think I was sleeping and leave me in peace. I heard the sound of someone shuffling around and then the ruffle of sheets being pulled though and I suddenly remembered that I was supposed to be getting a roommate today.

“I can tell you're awake you know,” I heard a voice say.

I sighed and opened my eyes and looked over at the other bed in the room to see a girl, probably about my age sitting cross legged on her bed, tugging on the ends of her long blonde hair and bringing it closer to her face, as if she were checking for split ends. She sighed and let her hair fall back down over her shoulder before she looked over at me and when she saw that I was now “awake” she smiled.

“’Sup,” she said with a nod of her head.

I couldn’t help but let out a small laugh at her greeting. “Hey.”

“You been here long?” she asked, sticking her legs out in front of her and leaning back into the bed.

“A few days, you?” I asked, thankful for the company that I had been lacking since I was checked in here.

“Came here yesterday, though I don’t know why, I’m getting better,” she muttered the last part more to herself than me.

“How long you here for?”

She sighed. “Hopefully just a week. What about you?”

“The same, I should be leaving on Tuesday.” I said with a small smile.

“So what are you in for?” she asked after a moment of silence and I realized I was starting to like her, she didn’t hold back and she wasn’t afraid to offend you.

“I took a few too many sleeping pills,” I explained with a frown, disappointed in not only myself but once again the irony of the fact that I thought sleeping pills would help wake me up.

“You know, I heard a glass of warm milk works just as well,” she said with an understanding smile.

“Thanks, I’ll remember that,” I said with a small laugh, thankful that she wasn’t being too serious about this situation we were in. “What about you?” I asked then, deciding that if she could pry so could I.

She let out a long dragged out sigh. “I may not like to eat as much as I should.” She shrugged.

“I love food,” I said simply, for I didn’t really know what else to say at that point.

She laughed. “I’m starting to; it’s just taking me some time. Maybe you can help me, tell me what’s good and what not.” She said nonchalantly though I could tell she was being serious.

“Sure, if you want.” I said with a shrug, it would actually be nice to have some company for the rest of my stay here.

“I’m Sam, by the way, what’s your name?”

“Rori,” I answered and returned her smile.

“Rori? Is your real name Lorelai?” she asked in a playful tone and I laughed at her Gilmore Girls reference, it was actually something I heard a lot of.

“No, actually, my name is Aurora.” I explained.

“Huh, like the princess?” Sam asked with a smirk.

“Yep, like the princess,” I confirmed with a roll of my eyes.

“How cute.” She said with another smirk before a thoughtful look came across her face. “Kind of ironic, yeah?”

“What?” I asked with curiosity, my life just seemed to be full of ironic misfortunes lately.

“Your name is Aurora and you wanted to try and sleep forever.”

I couldn’t help but smile when I understood her words; Aurora was Sleeping Beauty. We didn’t say much after that and I once again tried to get some sleep, trying my best to keep the ironies away though failing miserably. It was a few minutes later when Sam spoke up again and I didn’t know it then but after that conversation, she would become one of my best friends.

“Can I call you Princess?” she asked turning to look over at me.

“Please don’t call me Princess,” I groaned.

She grinned. “I’m going to call you Princess, and you will always be my Princess.” She said with a laugh, her tone playful but the both of us seemed to realize what had happened in that moment.

I looked toward the door as I heard footsteps quickly approaching and Tony’s pleas to Sam to tell her to slow down. I didn’t want her to; I wanted to see her just as bad as she apparently wanted to see me. I quickly got out of the bed just as she appeared in the doorway. She still had the same long blonde hair which was curled in loose waves over her shoulders and I could see her piercing blue eyes – which were slowly filling with tears – as she looked at me standing there, a small smile forming on her face.

“Hey Princess,” she whispered.

“Hi Sam,” I responded, my own voice and eyes clouded with tears.

They were happy tears though because I remembered. I remembered Sam. This wasn’t like what I felt with Tony or even Mike though, I actually remembered her. She was my best friend who had been there for me for everything since that first time we met in the psyche ward. Neither one of us were considered crazy but had been forced to go there after we both tried destroying ourselves. In a way, Sam had helped save me and in return, I had saved her.

I immediately made my way to her and we collapsed into each other’s arms as our crying started to fill the room. I didn’t need to say it out loud for Sam to know that I remembered her, my hug said it all. As we stood there I got all these little flashes of things we had done together like going to the beach, getting our hair done, and even standing side stage as we watched the men we love live their dreams. Or even how no matter where we were or what we were doing, if the song Mr. Brightside by The Killers came on we would immediately burst out into grins and giggles and dance around like idiots because it was our favorite song.

It was a bittersweet reunion because I automatically felt guilty that I had remembered Sam before I remembered Tony but in a way, I knew this was a good thing because now I had someone who I could talk to about all of this.

Maybe Sam could help me remember and she could save me once again.

Notes

So just a little filler so that I could introduce Sam into the story so now Rori has someone to help explain things more to her....so yeah, haha, just a heads up too, I have to go back to work (I've had the past three days off, hence all the updates lately) so I can't promise when the next update will be but please leave me some feedback and let me know what you guys are thinking!
